Trust Women Week

by: puzzled

Tue Jan 24, 2012 at 16:34:07 PM PST

1 in 3 women

I read this story at the big Orange, about Trust Women Week and the 1 in 3 Campaign.  And though I just posted earlier today that I had nothing to write about, the synchronicity was too much for me to ignore.

Hi, my name is puzzled and I had an abortion.

I had never typed those words, with or without my real name until last night.  By now you all know I'm on a journey toward openness (though not so open I'm ready to give up the relative anonymity of my nom de blog)  :-)

I have shared many parts of my life with the friend I've referenced before, but had told him I needed to hold back a few parts of myself. This is one of those things I thought I'd never be able to tell him.  (insert wry laughter here)

I am finding that in direct contrast to the closed-off person I've always been, by opening up and trusting I am happier, calmer and less fearful.  It makes no logical sense-giving someone information which could later be used to hurt me should make me feel less safe, not more, but life is complicated, and the journey, as well as my evolution, continues.

So I made up my mind to tell him this story  on January 22, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.  I was afraid-my heart was pounding as I blurted out (can one actually blurt while typing?) a short version of what I am about to tell you.  Though he is kind and non-judgmental, I worried that he would not understand.  His politics are much more conservative than mine in some ways, he is a churchgoer, and is adopted.  All reasons I should just have STFU and kept my secret buried where it has been since I was fifteen.  But I seem compelled to share, so I did.

puzzled :: Trust Women Week
Yes, I said fifteen.  It was my first  boyfriend.  He was sixteen and had a car.  I was younger than all the kids in my group, and thought I would never be cool enough or pretty enough to have a real boyfriend.  I was at that awkward age, and my insecurities ran high.

Well, the relationship progressed through that winter and spring.  Grateful for his attention, I let him go farther than I felt comfortable with, and eventually one of our evenings ended with me being date-raped in his car.  I cried all the way home.  Hurt and confused, I went in to talk to my mom.  I can still picture her, tissuing off her makeup, as I stumbled over the words: "Steve raped me."  She paused for a second, resumed her ablutions, saying only: "Don't tell your father."

I continued dating Steve.  Couldn't tell you exactly why-who knows exactly what goes on in the mind of a teenage girl?  We continued having unprotected sex.  I was not stupid, I knew the risks, but didn't know how to access birth control, or even condoms.

Of course, I ended up pregnant.  I was at tennis camp when I first realized I probably was.  I was throwing up all day long, and when one of the counselors confronted me, I shared my suspicions with him.  The look in his eyes told me I should have kept it to myself.

When I got back, Steve took me to Planned Parenthood, where a pregnancy test confirmed what I already knew, and I got a referral to an abortion clinic.  I knew and he knew it was the only option, although he was Catholic and his mother was very active in the pro-life movement.

The day of the procedure comes back to me in pieces-like a slideshow.  I can remember the waiting room, staring at the pattern in the carpet, palms sweating.  Jumping when the needle which would deliver the anesthetic to my cervix poked me, and the doctor admonished me to keep still.  Most of all I remember the kind nurse who held my hand and spoke softly to me throughout the procedure.  I even remember the shirt I was wearing that day.

The ride home is a blur, as is the rest of that day.  I remember cramping, bleeding, but putting on a brave face to come out of my room and have dinner with my parents, because the lesson my mother had taught me, wittingly or unwittingly, is that we don't talk about things like this.  I got up the next day and went to driver's ed., even though I was told not to drive for 24 hours, because I couldn't tell anyone what had happened.

I never did tell my parents.  For good or ill this was before the days when parental notification became one of the strategies to make it harder for young women to get an abortion.  I never told my friends, though years later, after I graduated from college, I volunteered for an abortion referral service, and shared my story with the Director.

But why should I have felt ashamed?  Why, more than 30 years later, am I still reluctant to share my story?  Why should it have power over me?  It should not, and this is another step in my journey.  My friend?  He accepted my story with grace and told me to let go of my shame and not worry about what I cannot change.  Obviously my trust in him was well-placed.

So judge me.  Go ahead.   I can handle it.  I am no longer ashamed.

I had one. (9.00 / 4)
I know a lot of women of our generation who did. We could. Thank god. And that includes a lot of Catholic girls whose beliefs were at odds with their choice. When you get pregnant, that's when the rubber hits the road and pie in the sky ideals takes a back seat. And many of their Catholic parents supported them, because let's face it, even George HW Bush and Dan Quayle want their family members to have their privacy respected... as they eviscerated everyone else's freedom of choice. A lot of pro-lifers are hypocrites. When reality strikes, pragmatism wins. I have no moral qualms, though. I didn't then. I don't know. There is absolutely no friction between my spiritual beliefs and abortion. But, I can only speak for myself. And so I do.

"What fresh hell is this?" -- Dorothy Parker

thank you (6.00 / 2)
for speaking up.  It is important.  I know what you mean about the hypocrisy.  I have a friend who's Catholic and whose children are adopted. Whenever anyone brought up abortion it was always "If their birth mothers had an abortion, we wouldn't have them..."

Well...fast forward to adulthood, and my friend had no problem paying for an abortion when her daughter got pregnant, or a year later when it was her son's girlfriend's turn.  Funny that.

In case there's someone out there who doesn't know... (6.00 / 2)

I did, too.

One of the smartest things I ever did -- and I didn't regret it, ever, for a second. It was not a "difficult decision" -- it was a no-brainer.

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

Nice job (7.67 / 3)
It would be better if this was easier for you to write. In fact, it would great if you were involved in a discussion about abortion, and you could acknowledge that you were one of the millions of women who have been served by planned parenthood without hesitation. Without even thinking twice about it. And if being raped never left the victim with a sense of embarrassment or shame. It should be even easier than ackhowledging that you know most of the words on the "Best of the Carpenters" CD.

We're not there yet. I don't know if we'll get there during our lifetimes. But I'm going to pretend we're already there. So I won't acknowledge your bravery in sharing your story. I won't tell you great job for setting an example that others should follow.

I'll just say nice job, and that I'm glad your writers block disappeared for at least long enough to share with us.

to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance .  G. Washington

The Carpenters? (9.00 / 1)
Seriously?  Lol.  I'm now afraid I'll have the only song of theirs I do remember, "Close to You" stuck in my head.

Thanks for reading, and for the kind thoughts.  You're right, of course--it shouldn't be a big deal. I feel in many ways we've gone backwards since that time.  The group I volunteered with had a Speaker's Bureau--women who would go into high schools and discuss their experiences in front of juniors and seniors.  I think in today's climate, such a thing would meet with parental outrage.

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

[ Parent ]
Although I think Kane (5.67 / 3)
raises great points, I'd still like to commend you on your bravery here. Thanks for sharing, and fuck you Steve, wherever you are.

damn straight about Steve (10.00 / 2)
I know from irrefutable sources there are way too many "Steves" out there; I've wanted to do harm to two of them. The phrase "Don't tell your father" is unknown in our home.

[ Parent ]
there are (7.67 / 3)
and one unfortunate consequence of all this was the damage it did to my self-esteem, which led me into some even worse situations over the next couple of years.  Funny thing is--the guy who got me pregnant--Steve.  Second guy who date-raped me (under really awful circumstances)--Steve.

My best friend, who has gotten me to open up about every damn last thing in my life and taken me through this journey step by step?  Steve.

That name has now been redeemed for me.

I'll bet you were/are a wonderful father.  One lesson I took away from all this was that I always talked openly about everything with my kids--they knew they could come to me about anything, and I've heard some things that shocked the hell out of me, though I tried hard to remain impassive and non-judgmental.  But I've always been there for my kids, and now that they're adults, they've told me how much it meant that they never had to be afraid to talk to me.

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

thanks, dknow (6.00 / 2)
he was a kid--I was a kid.  I hold no ill-will toward him.  At least he stayed with me through the procedure--I've seen girls unceremoniously dumped by their boyfriends under the same circumstances.

Yeah (5.00 / 1)
That makes sense. I had a visceral reaction when reading the post.

also (8.00 / 2)
in Orange albeit a slightly edited version.

Posted over there during SOTU on a whim, figured it'd sink like a stone.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, it's been picked up by Community Spotlight.

WTF, I said I was being more open, and that's about as out there as you can get.

And my friend?  He finds it fucking hysterical that he's a featured character on a lefty blog the size of DK.  There may be hope for his politics yet. :-)

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

I will judge you!!! (9.75 / 4)
Great post.

Kudos to you as an adult(?)  for coming to terms with and telling your story.

Kudos to you as a youth for making an informed decision, whatever the outcome was. You got information, made a decision and did what you felt had to be done.  Quite mature for a teenager living in a emotionally repressive situation.

And while I'm judging, kudos to your friend for being supportive.

Kudos to me for getting my internet back.

Plus, your grammar was excellent.

Damn, this judging stuff can be fun!!

DA is The Most Interesting Man in the World. - Karmafish

judging (8.00 / 3)
I think you're doing it all wrong.

But thanks.  Adult?  I don't think I'm the only one here who deserves to have that appellation followed by a question mark...

Glad you got your internet back, though given your spotty posting record, not sure I would have noticed it was out.  Now you can share the story of the wedding with all of us.

And, except for my habit of starting sentences with "and" and occasionally ending them a preposition with--my grammar is usually adequate.  So there.

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

[ Parent ]
puzzled, your online friend is right. (0.00 / 0)
You should let go of any shame you feel and not worry about how others will react. In fact I want to thank you for being open and sharing with us.

It is in sharing what we feel strongly about, that we often find our voice again whether we share it in writing or in person.

As for abortion, as a man I feel duly unqualified to tell a woman what she should or shouldn't do with her body. It isn't my right. That's the way I see it.

Again, thank you for sharing your story with us. And hugs, dear lady.
