Hmmm...on second thought, Shockwave, maybe you shouldn't show her this.  The thought of me being everywhere again might extend her hospital stay.

Being in the hospital sucks, but look at it this way:
1. No cooking or cleaning.
2. Lots of bedrest.
3. Catching up on your reading, writing, television viewing.

I hate being in the hospital, but then again, being tended to is great. Now, if we could just smuggle a cabana boy into the hospital for you, Maryscott, you'd be set. :)

If I ran the zoo, as wu ming likes to say, I'd see to it that all the patients got meals that were so sublime they'd either recover their lust for life at once and recognize that the hills are alive with the sound of music or else drop dead from sheer ecstasy.

when the wife was in the hospital this summer (8.00 / 1)

i regularly smuggled fruits and veggies from our garden and the farmer's market into the recovery room, the food was so godawfully bland. there's been a bit of a local push in the central valley to try and get hospitals to get their produce from local farms, but for freshness and as a way of creating more local demand. i couldn't stomach the mush that passed for food in there.

someone should really smuggle some food in for maryscott. hopefully there are some nice tasty oranges that survived the frost.

I hadn't heard from her since she called me from the hospital the night Adam took her there. She sounded...well, she sounded like a woman who knew the time had come to seek the help of professionals, so that she could resolve ongoing medical problems and return to a healthy and happy life.

I remember telling her that I and everyone else always loved her and always would, and that she had as much support as she needed from us.

So I am glad to hear that she is doing well and getting treatment. Until she returns I feel it's best to let her and the doctors work together on rest and recovery, and give her whatever space she may need. I'm glad you've been keeping in contact, Shockwave. If/when you talk to her again tell her I miss her and wish her all the best.

I sent you a card awhile back, and later sent a copy of the book I wrote. The book can back undelivered, which is okay if you didn't want it. It was a little book about my Texas sheriff granddaddy, and I thought it might entertain you a bit while you were on required bedrest. One thing about my grandfather was that he had no time for any kind of dishonesty or bullshit, and he was fond of saying, "You can burn me for a fool, but you won't get no ashes."

Your clear, take-no-prisoners voice is missed. Take all the time you need, call us if you need to kick the doctors into shape to solve the mystery of your ailments. Please know we love you and are always on your side, even if we are not able to be there BY your side.

If you are the designated visitor for all of us, I hope you will bring these comments along.

I not quite sure how to put this, but I think one of the best things we can do for MSOC is let her know how important she is in the lives of so many people--not important in the sense that she needs to DO things--but important in a much more meaningful and profound way.

She needs to hear from all of us how truly unique and valuable she is in the lives of everyone on this board. It would be great if someone could put together a short post that would let all of us say in our own ways what she does mean to each of us and quite frankly to the survival of all that we collectively believe in. Then maybe Shockwave could take them along the next visit. In fact maybe we need to suspend the normal posting for a day and all of us post something about MSOC.

It's time all of us gave something back for all that we have been given. This is a very unique and special person who needs our help. 

Sending stuff from the wish list is also a good idea, but something tells me that what she needs hear is to know how important she is. I'm going to get corny here, but I am a sucker for Capra's Wonderful Life and in a way I think what she needs to hear is how all our lives would have been different had we not found her or she found us.

and then I swing by here and see I didn't even have a clue what was going on...that makes me sad. Though not as sad as to hear what you're going through. Maybe it's small comfort, but I bet there are a lot of people, like me, thinking of you fondly even if they have no idea what's going on right now. Here's hoping you're better soon!

I had suggested above that we have a page of comments for MSOC or even a day on the site. Shock suggested that since this has become the main place to post comments that we post them here, so I add this one.

In my case the following piece was moved by the bird motif that not only obviously is the in the title, but birds and flying seem to be images and metaphors found throughout the blog.

And what of the white bird on the wing, responding to invisible ocean-like swells accompanying unseen shifts in the winds with slight movements of it feathers. In times when the trees bend and threaten to snap and sensible people stay indoors, the white bird beats against the violent gusts, asserting its nature even against nature itself.  There are also hot, sultry days when some malevolent force weighs down the air so much that it can be an effort to breathe and all but impossible for anything to fly. Even on those days you catch a glimpse of a speck high in the sky, circling above it all.

Perhaps this is why white birds remain sacred to many throughout the world, symbols of peace that we release by the hundreds at important ceremonies where they spiral on the winds carrying hope. Yet even as some are moved to release others desire to capture and tame, scattering their offerings in the wind or across the waving grass. But for those who yearn to soar, the bird is.

Is is the whiteness of feathers which when the sun catches them right can seem luminously transcendental. Is is a vision o freedom unfettered, for freedom is not another name for nothing left to lose but an expression of everything left to find.
