The Iran Contradiction Affair

by: Jeff Huber

Thu Feb 15, 2007 at 09:52:11 AM PST

Also at DKos.

The story on Iranian involvement in Iraq is still spinning like a cartoon Tasmanian Devil.

On Sunday, during a secret briefing in Baghdad, a trio of unnamed "senior defense officials" presented the long awaited "proof" that Iran is supplying weapons to Iraqi extremists.  By Sunday afternoon in the United States, the Washington Post had posted a story on the briefing.

Iran Sending Explosives to Extremist Groups in Iraq, Officials Say

By Joshua Partlow
Washington Post Foreign Service
Sunday, February 11, 2007; 1:54 PM

BAGHDAD Feb 11 -- Iranian security forces, taking orders from the "highest levels" of the Iranian government, are funneling sophisticated explosives to extremist groups in Iraq, and the weapons have grown increasingly deadly for U.S.-led troops over the past two years, senior defense officials said Sunday in Baghdad.

By Sunday evening, the story was being echoed through electronic media outlets.

Jeff Huber :: The Iran Contradiction Affair

On Monday morning, the Post released another version of Partlow's story that contained an important codicil.
With so much official U.S. buildup about the purported evidence of Iranian influence in Iraq, the briefing was also notable for what was not said or shown. The officials offered no evidence to substantiate allegations that the "highest levels" of the Iranian government had sanctioned support for attacks against U.S. troops. Also, the military briefers were not joined by U.S. diplomats or representatives of the CIA or the office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Interestingly enough, Partlow's original article disappeared from the Post's web site, and hyperlinks to the original led web surfers to the rewritten version.

As Monday wore on, the rest of the media began questioning the validity of the intelligence presented at the brief, although White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said he was confident the Iranian government had approved delivery of the weapons to Iraq.

On Tuesday, in Indonesia, Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Peter Pace said he was not certain that "the Iranian government per se, for sure, is directly involved in doing this."

Later on Tuesday, Snow said that Pace's comments did not contradict those of the White House or of the "senior officials" in Baghdad.  "We're not on separate pages," Snow said.

Not on separate pages?  Hell, they were on separate planets.

Iran Contradictions

At his press conference in Washington on Wednesday, Mr. Bush said he was certain that certain factions in the Iranian government had supplied arms to Shiite militias in Iraq, but wasn't sure if Iran's highest officials had directed the attacks.

I can say with certainty that the Quds Force, a part of the Iranian government, has provided these sophisticated I.E.D.'s that have harmed our troops…  And I'd like to repeat, I do not know whether or not the Quds Force was ordered from the top echelons of the government. But my point is, what's worse, them ordering it and it happening, or them not ordering it and its happening?

My point is, what's worse, sounding like you know what you're talking about or sounding like you're pulling the same shell game with Iran that you pulled with Iraq?

Mr. Bush also said "The idea that somehow we're manufacturing the idea that the Iranians are providing IEDs [improvised explosive devices] is preposterous."

Yet that idea is no more preposterous than anything else we've seen the Bush administration manufacture.

Mr. Bush said he still refuses to have direct talks with Iran because "I believe that's a more effective way of convincing the Iranians to give up their nuclear weapons ambitions."

Iran has consistently avowed that it has no interest in developing nuclear weapons.  The Bush administration has offered no proof that the Iranians are lying on that score.  Iran also vehemently denies that it is providing weapons to militants in Iraq.

The really preposterous aspects of this situation are that we have less reason to believe Bush than we have to believe the Iranians, and that Mr. Bush would assert that the best way to pursuade someone to do something is to not talk to them.

Even more preposterous is that with the fates of nations at stake, cable news channels devoted most of their Thursday programming to the three-way struggle over possession of Anna Nicole Smith's body.  And more preposterous than that is the notion that anyone would fight over possession of her body.  She is, after all, past her prime.

Stan Goff-third Carrier group on the way.

If the story from Haaretz quoted below is true, then the Iranians have pulled off the "Kilroy" to end all Kilroys.

If true it would be of enormous significance and despite the unsurpassed excellencies of the US Navy, it could very well be true. The Iranians are the "home team" and unlike the US Navy, they don't have the scenarios of hundreds of different contingencies all over the globe to prepare for. They are only threatened by the United States and Israel in their neighborhood and they have had since 1979 to prepare their defenses. To think, to game.

The story reminds me of something the Ghurkas were said to do in the Italian campaign of WWII. They would infiltrate German lines at night and when they found two or three German soldiers sleeping together in a foxhole they would cut one of the enemy soldier's throats at random without waking the others. The next morning the sleeping soldiers would wake to find their comrade dead... The word got around. So where there were Ghurkas known to be in the line, Germans didn't get much sleep. I think military action with Iran could be very nonproductive. All the US needs right now is to have an aircraft carrier sunk.

Thomas Homer-Dixon: ... It's unlikely that the future is going to be a linear extrapolation of the present, but I've pretty well arrived at the conclusion that the diversity and power of the stresses that we're encountering are going to cause some major volatility. I expect social, political, economic and technological crises and breakdowns. It's hard to say what they're going to look like, but the probability of some major problems developing is rising.

Iran Revolutionary Guards: Unit engraved emblem on U.S. ship - Haaretz Abstract: A commander in Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Wednesday that a commando unit has engraved the military organization's emblem into the side panel of an American warship stationed in the Persian Gulf. Nur Ali Shushkari, the head of the Revolutionary Guards ground forces, told Iranian pro-government news agencies that the symbol was etched onto the ship by the crew of a submarine that had managed to reach the U.S. vessel without detection by radar.(...) Shushkari warned the United States that if a confrontation arises, all American forces in the gulf as well as targets inside the U.S. itself would be targets for attack

Iran maybe, SA no (4.00 / 1)
Saudi Arabia wants neither a comprehensive peace plan between Israel/Palestine nor the destruction of Israel. Either one would probably result in a true democratic Arab country. They are motivated to maintain controlled chaos (as in Iraq) more than peace. An(other) Arab democracy would lead to increased demands from Saudi citizens for similar government control. Saudi ruling royalty does not want that.

to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance .  G. Washington

In other words (10.50 / 2)
They haven't a shred of evidence beyond the wet-dream posturing of the radical neocons. And the Washington Post fell for it. (It's also telling that the CIA and other intelligence agencies are staying well away.)

Bush was "certain" Saddam Hussein had ordered centrifuge tubes for concentrating uranium, and had bought uranium ore for central African states. And he refused to talk to Saddam, too. "Deja vu all over again."---Yogi Berra

I'm reminded of all the "extra-terrestrials must have built the pyramids because the ancient Egyptians were way too primitive (read stupid) to do so" books. The Iraqis aren't stupid. Of course their home-built IEDs will get more sophisticated over time. It's called a "learning curve". You've got an awful lot of probably very smart people with no jobs and way too much time on their hands over there. Here we get hackers. There they make IEDs.

But examination of the available data leads only to the conclusion that the biggest beneficiary of the Bush Presidency is Warren Harding. (Steve Mirsky, "Antigravity", SciAm 10/05)

Hard to believe (6.00 / 1)
the the country is probably going to follow the war criminals into yet a third country that did not do anything to us.  Not that they are, but why wouldn't Iran want to help Iraq get rid of Americans?  Wouldn't we help Mexico if it was invaded by Belgum?

I heard our priceless lier this morning on the news saying that maybe the President of Iran did not know if weapons were coming from his country.  The Lier in Chief opined that maybe it was even worse to not know what was going on in his country, if he didn't know.

So, can I hear that mighty chorus once again (on the eve or some kind of attack from the US) about how DUMB this guy is and how none of his plans ever work out!

I heard e-mails to Good Morning America today that asked why the show even went to Iran and gave our enemy such exposure on TV.  We're cooked.

Vigilance is the price of freedom. That means us citizens, and not our professional military or its industrial complex bleeding us for every dollar they waste protecting corporate hegemony. That is part of what weakens citizens and puts us in danger.

Sticking it in the mixmaster . . . . (10.50 / 2)
The photos (posted by BBC & LATimes) of the mortar & RPG rounds displayed at the so-called "Baghdad briefing" are not from Iran.  Many internet bloggers have noted the English language markings.

Far more telling, though, are the primer tails from the base of the mortar rounds.  All of them are stamped "2006."  It's the year 1427, I think, in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, Afghanistan . . . .

This circle-jerk is more phony than the forged Niger uranium ore documents signed by folks who hadn't been in office for 20 years.

It is personally embarrassing to me that the lying dumb-asses who fake this stuff don't even do it well.  It's like some youngster taking a dollar bill & adding a couple of zeroes with a magic marker behind each of the "1s" & pretending it's a C-note.

And our alleged journalists re-tell these hapless fairy tales instead of booing, hissing & throwing rotten fruit.

Orwell had no klew how bad this would become!

It amazes me (0.00 / 0)
that the American people are falling for all this, after the Iraq evidence has been shown to be false.

The whole selling of an attack against Iran feels like they just pulled out the Iraq playbook and changed a few of the specifics.

I hear otherwise intelligent people going around these days repeating the "Iran is behind the insurgency" meme, and I want to scream.

Watching it unfold is like watching a bad movie replay itself in slow motion.  You know how it ends, but you're powerless to change it.  All we need now is Condi going to the U.N. to make the case for war. She can trot out some "evidence" and furrow her brow, and voila--instant war.

Insert witty quote here.
