House Rules (Why Field Negroes Should Break Them)

by: field negro

Mon Feb 19, 2007 at 10:05:09 AM PST

(I'm re-promoting this because, even though I disagree with the thrust of the author's argument about Francis Holland, I think he raises excellent points about the interactions between the whitosphere and blackosphere. - promoted by Nonpartisan

A blogger for whom I have a great deal of respect posted a few days ago about the White vs. Black blogosphere debate that I have been participating in recently. Her post was more a critique of another blogger,
Francis Holland, who started this debate after he was booted from Daily Kos.

Ms. Tubman raised some very good points, and I would expect no less from her. But I must take issue with some of the things she said concerning Mr. Holland. Throughout her post, she seemed to be admonishing Mr. Holland for not blogging with the proper tone, or for being a "bull in a china cabinet" while he was allowed to post on Daily Kos. (To be fair, Ms. Tubman said she agreed with the message but not how it was being delivered.)

My question to Ms. Tubman would be this: Should we modify or stance on positions or the way we post in order to be allowed to participate in certain online discussions with white folks? I would certainly hope not, and if there are black bloggers out there doing that....well, let's just say that I hope they gave you a very nice "room" and computer in the house for your troubles.

field negro :: House Rules (Why Field Negroes Should Break Them)

Now I don't want to speak for Mr. Tubman, she is more than capable of speaking for herself. But I am sure she will say that her critiquing of Mr. Holland was due mostly to the fact that he himself, seemed to really want back in with the Daily Kos crowd. So one could argue that her post was a road map for him to more or less find his way back in. But I doubt seriously that Mr. Holland's motivation was to simply get back on Kos just to say he could post there again. I suspect that his motivation was political, as he really seems to have a thing for Hillary, and he wanted to openly campaign for her on a site that clearly has kicked her to the curb. Mr. Holland suspects that his race has something to do with why he was kicked off. And while it may not have been a direct cause, I think the fact that he is black made the conversation -- whatever it happened to be -- more uncomfortable, even for the so called progressives over there at Kos.

Now let me be clear; as I have stated before, I couldn't care less whether I interact with that crowd or not. Their issues aren't my issues, and visa versa.

"So the rage against the machine bit is self created. If you want to talk about Iraq, or oil, or campaign finance reform, or deficit/debt... there's none of that on Field Negro..."

That would be correct "Charlie," you won't get discussions here about the deficit, the national debt, campaign finance reform, etc. You know why, my progressive friend? Because most black folks out here don't give a fuck about those issues. We are too busy trying to hold down a nine to five and not get shot on our way home from work to be worrying about your fucking campaign finance reform. Like it makes a difference whether a motherfucker can spend 100 million or 200 million of his own money. Poli-tricksters, democrats and republicans will always find a way around that shit. Don't even get me started on these clueless, disconnected motherfuckers with whom I have to share country.

Sorry folks, that was a serious digression, and I tried to finish this post without cursing, (I guess they won't use this one at the Bob Dole Institute of Politics in Lawrence Kansas) but some people just set me off.

So anyway, back to Ms. Tubman's post. She had some wonderful and thought provoking suggestions towards the end. Should black bloggers come together around common goals and try to make ourselves stronger? Or should we seek more inclusion from white bloggers and combine our efforts with them around some common political agendas?

Folks, I think you know where I stand on this issue. The problem is, well, I won't call their names, but there are bloggers out there like the Christian lady, Lasha... whoops I said no names -- and a few more who know who they are -- who would tear the freaking house down if they thought they couldn't get in.

Unfortunately, because of their positions, and their way of making white folks feel good about themselves, these are the more popular sites among black bloggers. So the rest of us, who want to start unifying around issues that affect us, will have much more of an uphill battle ahead. It would be so much easier to sell out and write to make right wing "Charlie" and left wing "Charlie" more comfortable, but some of us just can't and will never do that.

I loved Ms. Tubman's the idea of a black ad network, and more black empowerment economically. But again, that will call for more black progressive bloggers (why do I even use that word) coming together and being unified in our goals. That's easier said than done, but I have hope. I am starting to see more and more positive black bloggers out here every day. (The usual posters to this site come to mind.) People who are truly independent and could really give a damn about what "Charlie" thinks.

The beauty of it is that many of these folks are new, and they haven't developed a large following just yet. So in a way, this is still virgin territory, and they can take this blogging thing in whatever direction they choose. It's too late for people like LaShawn, and Oliver, and Sh... whoops, I said I wouldn't call names. But that's what's so great about America, there are so many more of us out here, with so many resources, and so many points of view to express that even a few of us typing away in the house can't hold back our message. Because at the end of the day, the fields are so much bigger than the house, and there are so much more of us out here than in there.

waynemdbennett's tip jar (10.33 / 3)
despite the uncomfortable title, I think this merits FP.  The background players are unknown to me, but who do we want to be in this game called liberal blogging?

ps: (0.00 / 0)
we say fuck here right out loud, often and with feeling :)

I edited the diary (0.00 / 0)
to bring some of the text into Extended Text.

The title, BTW, has to do with the name of another site.

ProgressiveHistorians: History For Our Future

The Field Negro being his own site. (0.00 / 0)

The author of this essay, that is.

I came late to this discussion, but am VERY happy to see it was promoted.

Great minds and all that rot...

[ Parent ]
I've been looking at this essay all day and have the sense (0.00 / 0)
that I'm likely to agree strongly with the author's argument, but committment to "anonymity" and reluctance to name names just makes it very difficult to comment or sort out the facts, the arguments, etc.

I'd have rec'd it and commented if links to the back story had been provided--but without the backstory, sorry, it's just to rooted in innuendo and obscurity.

Can we at least have some links to the "conversations" that are at issue here? Without that , I don't see how any fruitful discussion can really emerge from this.

Maybe some better "hints" or "clues" for non-initiates?

And she lived happily ever after in her Hobbithole in the Hood

My post (8.50 / 4)
I am sorry for the omission of the name of my site and not creating links to the other bloggers I was referring to. (just not a techy)I blog as field negro http://field-negro.b...
and I am the author of the above post.

Unfortunately, when I signed up for this site I used my real name and not my blogging handle. Sorry again for the omisson. In the future I will post as field negro.

Thanks for posting my essay on MLW, and exposing other views to your readers.

Peace.

Well, thank you Sir for providing that link... (0.00 / 0)
it's going to take me some time--but looks like I'm in for a field day or two! ;-)

Welcome to MLW.

wayne... (0.00 / 0)

I hope you don't mind, but I filled in the asterisks with the missing letters.

I am never offended by profanity ,(and, in fact, you may discover, should you choose to hang out here from time to time, profanity is actively encouraged at MLW -- those poor, beleaguered words whose impact is so strong, but who keep getting shunned because someone, somewhere, decided that htye were "bad" words -- fuck that motherfucking noise).

I am, however, offended by asterisks in PLACE of letters in profane words. I'm actually working on an essay about that, so I won't "blow my wad" (ugh -- hate that expression) here -- just wanted to tell you it was I who altered your essay, and to apologise in advance if you feel it a trespass.

I'm of a mind to BAN asterisks used as substitues for letters in profanity.

I'm changing your screenname to The Field Negro. no need to re-register.

FYI (9.00 / 2)
Francis L. Holland was autobanned at Daily Kos.  He is an intelligent and eloquent diarist and I have recommended his work at MyDD, where he still posts.  But I participated in the downrating campaign that resulted in his being autobanned at dKos.

Mr. Holland brought this upon himself by clearly antagonistic behavior which had nothing to do with his support for Hillary.  He openly flouted site rules by posting essentially the same diary three times (first instance, second instance, third instance).  But far more damning were his nasty and vicious anti-Gore diaries, which became his only reason for posting on dKos.  He wrote diaries such as Why Was Old Al Gore Such a Transparent Hypocrite? and Al Gore, What Happened in Graduate School?  In this memorable diary, he turned the unconscionable offense of one commented who referred to him as a "monkey" into a slam on Gore, basically implying that Gore should come onto the thread and apologize to him personally for his supporter's slight.  It was outragious and vicious claims like this which resulted in his banning.

I agree with the diarist that the blackosphere is unfairly neglected by the BBB, but Mr. Holland is far from the best example of this.  Better examples of brown bloggers who should be given more credit among those in power include Liza and Brownfemipower.

ProgressiveHistorians: History For Our Future

if this is meta... (0.00 / 0)
and based on unfounded claims, then perhaps I should not have fp'd it.  I thought it about whether or not the liberal blogging community embraced people of colour or not....and how to build coalitions.

If it is about something else, then certainly demote it.  Thanks NP, Diane.

[ Parent ]
It's not unfounded (6.00 / 1)
Here's the original piece by Jill Tubman.  Basically, Tubman's piece is a balanced critique of Holland, while this piece is more positive than negative toward Holland.

Personally, I think Wayne's missing the point of why Holland was banned at Daily Kos -- I don't think it was because he wasn't "white" enough, I think it's because he was vile about Gore and didn't observe the rules of the site.  But it's not "wrong" or "unfounded" -- it's a difference of opinion.

ProgressiveHistorians: History For Our Future

[ Parent ]
To hell with the specific debate, I say.... (10.00 / 1)
The Field Negro blog has an extremely impressive blogroll featuring many voices like voice of a native son that deserve wider recognition.

Lots of exquisitely written content--and humor in no short supply!

I haven't the time at the moment, but will be studying this blogroll more carefully as time permits. Very rich content source there.

I suggest putting a link to the Field Negro website in the main body of the text--let folks follow the discussion and backstory and make their own determinations.

And she lived happily ever after in her Hobbithole in the Hood

[ Parent ]
The Junta and Markos (10.00 / 1)
You need more Francis Hollands around. You need to hear from a variety of people. I read some of his blogs. I don't see anything offensive. Critical of Al Gore ...so what? Critical of Markos Moultisas....of course!....I didn't know Markos worked for Henry Hyde!.....He's an ultra ultra conservative buffoon. A close look at nerdy Markos shows his family was on the side of the Junta.

Moulitsas was born in Chicago to a middle class, ethnically-Greek family from El Salvador (his uncle, an architect, had briefly been that country's education minister). The family moved back to El Salvador when Moulitsas was four and was on the right-wing side of the Cold War proxy fight there. But as that war's intrusions became unbearable-Moulitsas talks about stepping over dead bodies-the family returned to Chicago, where he grew up, in his own words, "a loudmouthed nerd."
This is from the Washinton Monthly not my famous intiution.

So Moultisas...according to this account.... is from a wealthy family that was on the side of  the military junta in El Salvador and whose uncle seems to have been part of the administration of a U.S. backed military junta that killed thousands of innocent people all ...again for absolutely nothing. To destroy communism...meaning workers who didn't have a lot of money and wanted the government to help them out.

Next question who were the dead bodies he says he stepped over? Were they from the right or the left. I read it was in a market place that he stepped over them.

Let's hear it for Francis Holland!

WHY is this relevant? (0.00 / 0)

If it is true -- and I have no reason to doubt you, do I? -- I have to ask -- SO the fuck WHAT?

Markos isnot responsible for his parentage, nor his uncle. And I'm fucking sick of seeing you repeat this little blurb of biography as if it is supposed to MEAN something to us.

Irrelevant and fucking annoying -- and posted so frequently it qualifies as SPAM.

Please, I would love to hear more on what we can do, but I am newer at the FP bumping thing, and don't want to step into the middle of an argument we weren't involved in.  Perhaps you could write another essay without naming names about how the left blogoshpere could embrace its black friends and allies better?

Why this subject. (9.75 / 4)
I understand that many people over at Kos had issues with Mr. Holland. But I am sorry, I am still not convinced that their issues with him did not stem as much from their discomfort with him as a black blogger,as it did for his support of Hillary.
Besides, my issue and post wasn't really about Mr. Holland being banned. That was just the catalyst for me venting about the disconnect between many progressive black bloggers and white ones.

IMHO, many "progressive" white bloggers are no different than their conservative counterparts when it comes to understanding my community and the issues that we care about.

Silence is never golden!

More explanations. (10.67 / 3)
I am sorry for breaking up my comments, but if you go to my site-I feel like a shameless self promoter-I think you will understand where I am coming from. I suppose I make a lot of people uncomfortable, but my goal in life is to try and influence people, and effectuate change; not to make friends.

I suppose I am not your typical....well, let's just say I don't really fit nicely into a box. But I care passionately about my race, as well as issues that effect my community. And there are many more like minded thinkers out here. I just think that if the white "progressive "community made an effort to understand what black folks REALLY think, and the issues we REALLY care about it would enhance the political dynamic between the two groups.

Silence is never golden!

his posts on dKos were rarely radical (0.00 / 0)
although i do remember a fantastic one he wrote about being in chile during pinochet's rule. mstly people objected to his intense promotion of hillary, as she is persona non grata there. my sense of it is that it wasn't about race as much as wanting to stomp sonmeone praising hillary, much as was done to the rare lieberman supporter in the 2004 primaries, or is done to greens pretty much all the time.

all the nasty shit said about cynthia mckinney over there, OTOH, was pretty openly and egregiously racist.

Here, with all the back-and-forth between the various Blogs already going on--those issues--that is, the power struggles and catfights between  the (predominately) white liberal blogs-- get in the way.

I, for one,  would like to see the President's Day for Dante piece posted here--and see if that isn't a better initial springboard for the broader discussion  you're aiming at.

We need an RSS reader for blackosphere (0.00 / 0)
similar to the VA Political Blogs rss reader
http://www.vapolitic...

or the RSS reader for the Eschaton community
http://eschatonians....

that way you could just scan what black political bloggers were saying.

Are you suggesting we should just more or less "eavesdrop" (0.00 / 0)
on the "blackosphere", not seek to dialoque with and attempt to first understand what the "blackosphere's" concerns/issues are and then possibly accommodate or incorporate those issues into the "white-osphere's" agenda and discourse?

And she lived happily ever after in her Hobbithole in the Hood

i would phrase it in the converse (10.00 / 2)
that the whiteosphere really ought to spend some quality time listening, and then, after actually haven gotten a sense of where the blackosphere is coming from on their own terms, try to get the beginnings of a dialogue started.

hmm, now i'm not so sure we aren't both saying the same thing. well, better to say it twice, i guess.

if white liberals and black liberals ever managed to get together and seriously hammer out enough trust and common ground to work together in solidarity, a lot of good stuff could get done. given the spatial segregation of our society, there is a real opportunity with the nowhereness of the blogosphere to start some conversations that simply don't happen, but desperately need to.

OK, I see your point. (6.00 / 1)
Call me clueless: until today I hadn't even known there was such a thing as a "blackosphere" (except in my own neighborhood/community, I guess. lol).

Aside from Culture Kitchen, Negrophile, Blackamericaweb and a few others, I hadn't realized there were all these black bloggers out there.

As you well know, I get very tired of the fact that this blog relies basically on two (clearly identified and prominent) "black voices" to represent "the" black community: Shanikka and Weeps. To me, it's lonely and tiring. Exhausting even.

Maybe you're right: if white liberal progressives were to "eavesdrop" on the "blackosphere" and first get a sense of what black liberals are talking about amongst themselves, maybe there'd be less fussin' and fightin' when one or the other black (or negrophile ;-) blogger comes in here saying what s/he really thinks instead cloaking his truth in half-truths and "safe space"-discourse.

And she lived happily ever after in her Hobbithole in the Hood

[ Parent ]
i had also sort of wondered where the blackosphere was (10.00 / 1)
since everywhere i ended up was overwhelmingly white (due dilligence: i am in fact a white boy, lest any newcomers mistake a chinese handle for chinese identity), i sort of assumed that some insidious digital divide had mostly shut out the black community, or that blacks were somehow less interested in online political sites or something. MLW's blogroll actually has a couple here and there (the new millenium negro and the quintessential negro, but without a link, it's hard to stumble across random communities.

i don't look to weeps and shanikka to represent the entire black community, i just look to them for their experience, the same way i look to you, or cali, or tarheeldem, or durrati, or eugene (hey, he's the only guy i know from OC), as a way of broadening my own perspective.

i've always thought that the left would be smart to take white and black volunteers, mix 'em up, and have 'em walk precincts in different neighborhoods, just to get them used to crossing those damned lines and walls that so ruthlessly prevent most of us from ever finding common ground. the online thing is just an extention, i think.

surf putah, your friendly neighborhood central valley samizdat

[ Parent ]
yeah, well you know as well as I do that even if you're (10.00 / 1)
not black and you dare to cross those lines saying the things that a lot of Black folk say "behind closed doors"--that is, if you go into a "white neighborhood" saying things that are said day-in/day-out in progressive and/or radically minded Black communities (or, more often, simply taken as self-evident and therefore don't even need to be talked about), you're likely to get your ass kicked, and eventually BANNED.

That was precisely the point I made here:

Seems that every time anyone on the radical left dares to express criticism of the liberal left, the Democratic minions come out like the  Charge of the Light Brigade: "Hoorah for the Life of a Democrat! Can't we all just `get along' and join forces in removing the abomination that is BushCo from office? We're on the same side for Christ's sake!" Ousting the Bush regime is a `noble cause' is worth fighting for and it might even be worth casting off the mortal coil of differences in opinion, taste and approach between us to achieve that goal. But my concern is not just remedying the present crisis of criminality in government. My concern is and always has been: the future. Seven generations. From this perspective, I must seriously question whether we really are all "on the same side."

I was talking to some friends of mine recently about these things, and I said:

No wonder a lot of us (radicals) are wise enough to keep what we really think safely tucked beneath our hats or between our tails. By comparison to what we say `behind closed doors,' most of the shitstorms that ensue from daring to say aloud in liberal communities is polite--sanitized and "civil" by comparison to what so often goes on behind closed doors.

And I asked my friends, in a voice and venue loud enough for the liberal left to overhear the question:

Why do we all just keep smiling and pretending "we're all the same inside," pretending we're all "on the same side," pretending those crazy motherfuckers are the "sane" ones, the "reasonable" ones, the "civilized" ones, and why do we keep coming home at night to vent ourselves blue in the face behind closed doors: "Jeezus H. Christ, man, and did you see how that whacked out motherfucking piece of shit went off on me when I suggested to that soulsucking, "shamanistic" Wannabee over there that she keep her filthy heart, hands and mind off the eagle feathers, the dream catchers, the cedar, the sweetgrass, the sage-not to mention the drums; and did you see that scumbag sellout, Uncle Tom's dicklickin' apple over there and the way he came runnin' behind her flat little cheezy-caked booty, sayin' `aw honey, that's one of them bad Injuns, dontcha know-don't listen to her, don't let her get you down-we ain't all like that, there's good Indians, too, and we like-in fact, we LOVE-your kind.'"

And the quote in bold is pretty much a verbatim rant that actually was spoken, and the person to whom I was speaking did not take offense: those words fell well within the bounds of "acceptable" discourse in my community: standard, garden-variety rant.

By comparison, just about every word of critique I have expressed on the issue of race in the "whitosphere" has been utterly sanitized and "civil"--completely within bounds of "polite discourse"--at least as far as language is concerned: it's the thought processes behind the language that people find offensive.

I've said it a thousand times over: jeez, people, you should be glad we take the time and effort to "tame it down" for you.

As to Weeps and Shanikka being the "house representatives" of "the" Black voice: I've also said this a thousand times over--I get very tired of these discussions on race occurring in a vacuum of a pretty much all-white majority. And between white people who, for the most part (not exclusively) have very little experience with Black communities Note: with Black communities, as opposed to Black individuals. You come away with a very different perspective on things when you are immersed--as an absolute minority (white-skinned person) in a Black community.

So again, the onus is on Black folk to "cross the line", come over here, stick their asscheeks together, tone things down, package them in a way that is acceptable to white folk (or not!) and risk going through the exhausting same-old, same-old routine of having to explain, explain, explain....when  in reality, it's the white folk who've got some 'splainin to do, no?

As the Randall Robinson fiasco attests: no matter how you package some things, white folk just don't want to hear it.

(Robinson diary now only available in this sanitized version because I deleted the first diary in which  Randall Robinson was crucified and dragged through the muck, just for expressing the brutal truth of his experience as an "articulate," educated, indeed, upper middle class Black  in this racist environment we call "America", and in which I was similarly crucified and dragged through the muck simply for agreeing with him and having the audacity of presenting this man's work to a majority white community).

The fact remains: what Robinson has expressed and what many Black bloggers express accurately reflects the experience of many Black men and women--in LIBERAL America, not just in conservative circles.  And every time these insights are brought to a majority white community, shit hits the fan: the "messenger" is shot down regardless of his or her skin color.

So yeah, maybe it would be a good idea for white folk to start "crossing those lines" and hanging out in the Blackosphere. They might get a better idea of how exhausting it can be to cross that line and attempt to weather the storm of being a minority voice in a predominately Black community.

Liberal Blogs are Suburban Blogs (0.00 / 0)
These blogs are populated in the majority by white, suburban people who have not traveled outside of vacations and have had very little experience with people who are in some way different than they. Very few city people....(people who were raised and still in live in cities).

There is a gigantic difference between people who were born and continue to live in cities and those who move to the city in later life or those who haven't lived in the cities.

Citiies are places where variety exists. Where tolerance isn't just expected it's a necessity. Cities especially port areas all over the world are the most liberal enviornments. Note that port areas of the U.S. and europe are heavilty commerced by foreigners. That's the reason for the liberality. Hamburg, Portland, New York New Orleans, Hong Kong. In America the Cities and Port areas especially are the places where Gore got most of his votes. It's the interior of the nation that voted for Bush. It's the interior of the nation that dominates the blogs...it seems apparent to me.

Francis is the worst example to hinge this argument around and the migration from Francis's trolling to Tubman's telling him to pipe down smells manufactured.  He should obviously *not* pipe down.  Just as obviously he should not be gratuitously abusive.

I saw some of the end stage behavior of Francis and had no idea he was black until it was explicitly mentioned after he started calling others racist in what appeared to me as a non-sequitor ad-hominem  attack of his critics to distract from his own abusive behavior.

He was imo just being a dick to his audience and race had nothing to do with it nor did it seem to have any thought through intention other than to piss off Gore supporters and Hillary haters(which it seemed to me he intended).  I guess if he saw those people as iherently oppressive to him then he might have a point but I'm pretty sure that is not being argued.

The demographics of race in blogging are surprising and troubling.  The reasons for it are not clear but I do not think the case for the salience of race being the reason has yet been made.

White Racists (0.00 / 0)

Race is not salient online - does not stand out - is not easily discerned.  Most of us are anonymous and I see no way to determine a persons race easily without it being explicitly stated.

You're right, we all have biases and stereotypes of many kinds but it takes environmental cues and mental heuristics to trigger them.  I have not yet seen anyone make a case that it happens regularly online.

Francis Holland (11.00 / 1)
Francis Holland said this on the Tubman blog:

"Most people at DailyKos live for the approval of others, to win recommendations. I never told anyone, but I always just looked at my "impact", and the "high impact list almost always included the diaries I had written, based on the number of people who had visited my diaries to argue with me about my ideas and my ways of expressing those ideas. For a Black person, to be listened to everyday in a group that is 97.5% white is quite a victory, particularly when you are too far from those whites for them to gather a lynch party and hang you from a tree!

Most of the time when Black people post "reasonable" things about our experience at DK, they get, mostly ignored. I'd prefer to be reviled than ignored. My diaries were consistently on the "high impact diaries" list. http://www.dailykos....
I wrote about DailyKos' hypocrisy both because DailyKos pack mentality means that readers there are irresistably drawn to diaries that gore, skewer and roast their sacred cows. "How dare I?" Because their every comment (even their criticism) pushes my diary higher on the "high impact diary list", maybe even to the extent of being picked up by the New York Times. http://www.dailykos....
So my audience was far greater than those most immediate Kossacks who spend their time criticizing me."

I am white skinned. I agree with this. These blogs are all white suburban blogs that impose conformity of ideas. They don't want to hear what you have to say if you disagree or criticize people like that dumb ass nerd Markos whose family was associated with the military junta in El Salvador. Somebody ought to look that stuff up.

There is a poster here Xicano power whose diaries are about the best written, best researched on My Left Wing. Why doesn't he have front page status or whatever it is they call it? His stuff is about the best here. Nothing controversial either from the point of view of a white audience. He produces information. These blogs often get involved in talking about themselves instead of the war in Iraq for example.

I am disgusted with it. They are very conservative. And Daily Kos is a trojan horse that simply contains Republicans with a slightly democratic exterior.

Where the train got off the tracks is alluded to by Wayne in his comment:

Very very late to the party, I'm afraid. (0.00 / 0)

I must have been sick on Monday - how the hell I missed this I will never know.

Anyway. I've done my research on the brouhaha that inspired this piece, and in so doing I came across one of Holland's last posts at Daily Kos.

Mind you, I am TOTALLY at odds with Holland when it comes to Hillary Clinton and Al Gore and, no doubt, a helluva lot of other things. (For instance, in the post I'm about to quote more fully, he actually claims that "... DailyKos is principally a website for the leftward parts of the Democratic spectrum...")

Bwahahahaha.

At any rate, however diametrically we may be opposed on this and god knows how many other topics, I find Holland's writing -- particularly his grim humour -- marvelously enjoyable. Figures he got autobanned -- Speak No Evil of DKos is the one unspoken rule he forgot...

The 10 Unwritten Rules of Speech at DailyKos

I have participated at the DailyKos site for approximately a year, drawn here by the opportunity to support the liberal woman Democrat, Hillary Clinton, in this fiery furnace of Hillary haters and Al Gore lovers that only DailyKos can provide. Over this time, I have come to learn many of the written and unwritten rules of speech here, and I would like to share particularly the unwritten rules with new users.

This is especially important at the present time. I believe there may be an explosion of new users at DailyKos when US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton announces her candidacy for President of the United States, and I would like to help pro-Hillary users to participate in this site without being banned for posting "flame-bate" comments or diaries. Therefore, aware that to do so is forbidden, I state here, only partially "tongue in check", the ten unwritten speech rules that govern permissible speech at DailyKos:

  1. It is permissible to support Hillary Rodham Clinton at DailyKos, but it is considered to be in extremely poor taste to actually say so in writing. This is because DailyKos is principally a website for the leftward parts of the Democratic spectrum – progressives who prefer ex-DLC Al Gore or present DLC-member John Edwards or even the Reverend David Duke – anybody but Hillary Clinton!

  1. People who say positive things about Hillary Clinton are known as "Hillary-Shills" at DailyKos. This is because it is taken for granted at DK that no American would regularly express support for Hillary Clitnon unless he was being paid to do so.

  1. If you are being paid to support Hillary Clinton, you should say so. If you say you are not being paid, no one will believe you. You must understand this about DailyKos logic if you wish to maintain your posting privileges: The 35% of Democrats nationally who tell pollsters that they want Hillary Clinton for President are all paid members of Hillary Clinton’s campaign staff. If you are a Hillary Shill as I am, you should say so.

  1. It is permissible at DailyKos to discuss the "New Al Gore" with glowing admiration and complete credulity. However, only a "troll" would mention the "Old Al Gore" who is compelled by logic to exist to exactly the same extent that the "New Al Gore" exists. Forget that. Suspend disbelief at DailyKos. You may discuss the "New Al Gore" at DailyKos and any critical reference to Al Gore’s actual record can be dismissed with the dismissive phrase, "But Al Gore is a "New Man". But you must NOT discuss the "old Al Gore". New exists. Old does not. Got that?

(The "New Al" Gore is in no way related to the "Hombre Nuevo" ("New Man") concept that was a rhetorical and theoretical construct of the Sandinista government in Nicaragua. Because in Nicaragua, it was explicitly acknowledged that the mature "New Man" was the socialist alternative to the retrograde capitalist imperial lap dog pre-Ortega "Old Man". EL HOMBRE NUEVO

[redacted Spanish language -- You just never know, it might have been an incitement to riot in drag...] -- MSOC

(OOPS! I’ve broken Rule 36: "Don’t post phrases or quotes in any language that monolingual English-speakers might not understand!)

By contrast, Al Gore is "new" today, but he was never "old" yesterday. Please make no reference to the "old Al Gore" at DailyKos. The majority of contributors at DailyKos like Al Gore and, if you criticize him, you may well lose your posting privileges at DailyKos.

  1. "Troll Behavior" is not acceptable at DailyKos. Among types of behavior considered characteristic of trolls is (a) starting arguments by repeatedly supporting Hillary Clinton, (b) repeatedly mentioning the failings of Hillary Clinton’s opponents while disregarding the feelings and aesthetic tastes of other DailyKos members.

  1. The rules of citation at DailyKos. If you are John Sirota, you may criticize anyone as long and as often as you like without offering any actual proof (citations) for your contentions. But, if you are a Hillary Clinton supporter, you ought never to allude to positives about Hillary or negatives about her opponents, with or without proof. If you do, you are presumptively what we hear at DailyKos call a "Hillary Shill". (See above.)

  1. DailyKos is a progressive site with a progressive record of matters of gender and color. It is permissible to mention sexism and color-based antagonism at DailyKos, but not more than once per year. If you mention these societal scourges once, you have done your part in erasing them. If you mention them more than once, you have a "chip on your shoulder" and you are a "cry baby".

  1. Please be aware that only 2% of DailyKos users are black. Mind the Gap!

  1. If you are black and are looking for a place to vent about two hundred years of skin-color-aroused injustice in America, DAILYKOS IS NOT THAT PLACE. First of all, there are very few people here who will have any idea what you are talking about. And second, they are not interested.

  1. Participants at DailyKos do not hold any biases against women or minorities. But if you think it is time for a woman or non white-male to be President of the United States, you ought not say so at DailyKos. The DailyKos Public Opinion Governance Board (DKPOGB) has a strict and clear policy about this: The DKPOGB favors the best white man for the Presidency, regardless of his race or gender. There simply is no good reason for a woman or someone who is not a white male to be President, and it is irresponsible "Troll Behavior" to say otherwise.

Rule 10(a)  Do not post tags with you diary in combination with unpopular opinions. If you do, these tags will be removed by DK Trusted Users who were elected by their peers to perform this function. You see, if unpopular opinions are combined with Tags, and then readers might actually find, read and be swayed by your unpopular opinions. That is not permitted at DailyKos, unless you are expressing ideas with which the Trusted Users are in agreement.

Rule 10(b) If, after reading these rules, you do not feel that you can embrace them, then maybe DailyKos is not really the place for you. It is not that we don’t like you, but you might be more comfortable at another blog where people like you are more common. You see, DailyKos is really intended as a leftist white heterosexual. ECHO CHAMBER If you do not echo what others say, you may be severely reprimanded.

I hope I have successfully explained the DailyKos rules to newcomers, because I fear I may not have another chance to do so before my posting privileges are taken away. I’m about to be visited by the DKPOGB!

Okay, so I basically quoted the entire, with the exception of the Spanish stuff, which I deleted SOLELY because I didn't understand a word of it and am cautious of posting stuff in langages I don't speak, lest they be words with which I do not agree nor wish to have myself associated...

Anyway. Like I said -- in a previous incarnation -- the Old, Bad MSOC, the one for which I cannot get forgiveness from the marisacats of Blogdom -- I would probably have been one of the torch and pitchfork carriers in the melée that followed in the discussion area.

Needless to say, I found this all rather amusing; but at times, it was downright creepy. i swear, I really got the feeling from some of the more zealous trollrating gleeful bashers of this post that they were ECSTATIC to have an excuse to trash this man, with impunity, this BLACK man who could so obviously think, speak and write circles around them all...

It felt like a fucking blog lynching. And yeah, I'm using that word judiciously. I'm not saying the people tearing Holland to shreds in the comments were racist, bigoted motherfuckers -- I'm just saying that SOME of them really CAME ACROSS that way.

So, Wayne (and what WILL we call you once I've changed your screenname per your request? Negro? FN? Field? Oy.)... I suppose I should thank you -- or CURSE you -- for bringing that slaughter to our attention.

For me, it's merely further confirmation that I am right to ban people slowly and rarely. And that the Autoban feature is the fucking DEVIL'S PLAYTHING. The very worst of humanity can be found in a mob, and that's what it so often becomes once the word is out on the DKos Street that there's a troll in the town square. And should that "troll" be intelligent, intellectual -- brilliant, even -- well, so much the better, for it's just proof he's probably a PLANT, a PAID OPERATIVE put there to sow dissent and WE'LL SHOW THEM.

Eating our young, it's called? Yeah. Ugh.

Welcome to MLW, Wayne. I may have to call you Wayne even after we change your name -- I simply cannot IMAGINE addressing someone as "Negro." Yeesh.

Final note: Everyting Holland wrote about Gore is wrong. Reprinting it here was brutally painful, but I felt it was only fair.
