My Left Wing Earns High Praise

by: Maryscott O'Connor

Tue Mar 06, 2007 at 07:27:50 AM PST

(Sorry, I checked first, but we were just minutes apart. - promoted by Diane W)

I have no idea how the person who contacted me from Cyrano's Journal Online came across My Left Wing... but I'm sure as hell glad s/he did.

I'm not sure s/he'd want to be named, so let's just call this person CJ.

CJ emailed me today to let me know that My Left Wing had caught the eye of Cyrano's Journal Online and wanted to tell me how much appreciation there was thereabouts for MLW.

In order to give you some idea as to why I'm so fucking euphoric over THIS particular bit of recognition for our little blog that could...

Featured Writers of CJO:

Gore Vidal (Emeritus), Noam Chomsky, Alex Cockburn, Uri Avnery, Michael Parenti, Glen Ford, Edward Herman, Stephen Gowans, Ernest Stewart, John Steppling, Guy Zimmerman, Jason Miller, James Petras , Sheila Samples, Robert Parry, Phil Rockstroh, Bruce Dixon, Danny Schechter, Ilan Pappe, Carolyn Baker, Slavoj Zizek, Margaret Kimberley, Stephen Lendman Charles Sullivan

Most of us will recognise Chomsky, Vidal and possibly Cockburn of The Nation; but believe me, if you check out the CVs of the REST of that crowd -- jaw, meet floor. But don't pick it up just yet, because if you check out the GUEST Writers, among the many unfamiliar but probably JUST as impressive monikers on that roster you will find the best political writer Rolling Stone has had since the great Hunter S. Thompson stopped regularly contributing his magical tirades: Matt Taibbi

Now, without further ado -- no more ado is needed, methinks --

Here's what Cyrano's Journal Online has to say about us in its review of MLW in its Recommended Links section:

Maryscott O'Connor :: My Left Wing Earns High Praise

All emphases are my own.

Recommended Links

MY LEFT WING IS A VERY UNUSUAL BLOG. Highly original, bewildering in its offerings, a little dislocated at times due to its tremendous desire to be of service, this site is utterly democratic, receives warmly everyone who's battling in an honest way the forces of cruelty and injustice, and posts an equally impressive range of opinion on the issues of the day, yesterday and tomorrow.

The site reflects the generous temperament of Maryscott O'Connor, its founder and producer, who (not surprisingly) also happens to be a fighter for the liberation of animals and nature from human tyranny. Put MLW on your "must-visit" list. You won't be disappointed.

I post this not only because my overweening vanity demands it (though of course that is partially the rationale), but mostly because it is the greatest compliment I think I've ever received for the entirety of this community. The aggregate of talent and compassion and passion and intelligence and critical thinking skills and intelligent discourse -- what do they call it, the signal to noise ratio -- is astonishing and a wondrous miracle, as far as I'm concerned.

It is truly a testament to the community's character and talent and heart that people of this caliber take the time to write, take the time to write a review and post it in their Recommended Links section. Sure, I can and do take credit for the atmosphere of openness -- what the reviewer describes as " utterly democratic," and the "tremendous desire to be of service" could NOT be more on point, right down to its verbatim phrasing (even if, as is likely, an unintentional quote) from the 12th step of most 12 step programs. After all, my policies do guide things along here -- though god knows I've fumbled the fucking ball more than a few times.

Yes, I'll gladly take credit for the tone, the sense of freedom to speak one's mind you get here (unless what's on your mind is cruel, vicious epithets and harassment and berating of other denizens of our little Eden. Then, yeah, I get a little snippy.)

But the bulk of the credit for spurring the impulse in people to sit down and write emails, reviews and blurbs, to post links to MLW in their blogrolls -- that belongs to the aggregate of talent, passion, intelligence, compassion and sheer LOVE that gathers here daily in the form of the expanding core group known as the "regulars."

Those prolific, profound, perspicacious, peripatetic, passionate and perceptive, brilliant, bold, bright, burning and beautiful writers you read so voraciously on the Front Page and in the Community Essays section of My Left Wing are responsible for letters like the ones I get every day, praising me -- well, I'll take credit for gathering them in one place, for luring them onto our Front Page...

And the prolific, passionate people who fill our pages with insight and astonishing creativity and critical thinking in the form of comments that are, on and of themselves, often worthy of taking the essay form. THESE members are also responsible. For what good is a community blog with hundreds of posts but no discussions thereof?

And coming from a site the likes of CJO, the compliment is highest praise, in my estimation. Check out this site:
• Harold Pinter's Art, Truth & Politics, his Nobel acceptance speech, is reprinted here
• Bush Silences A Dangerous Witness, is Robert Parry's take on Saddam's hanging
• Saddam's Execution Was A Gargantuan PR Disaster -- Matt Taibbi offers his own view of same
• Here Come the Armani Democrats -- Joe Mowrey might well have titled this "Meet the New Boss...

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

So, yeah -- that's definitely going down as one of the high points, thus far, in the life of this little blog. The BBB may not acknowledge our existence, but lest we forget, there are bigger boys out there than the Big Boys of Blogging.

And I daresay, we'll become our own kind of Big Boy if we we keep going on this path of excellence and commitment to values and principles, to ethics, morals, standards and liberal ideas. If we simply (it's simple -- not easy) remain true to those commitments, rather than joining the centrist herd as they move ever further right in their furtive attempts to compromise, compromise, compromise, thinking it the winning strategy -- forgetting that when the centre compromises with the right, it moves... to the right, and what do we win, when that happens? -- we find, as time passes and the centrists lose touch with everything for which they once thought they stood, we will come to define the "left blogosphere" and they will rightly be defined as the "centrist blogosphere."

NO shame in that, by the way; the shame is in their having been tagged as "left" or, even more laughable, "leftist," when they're so obviously not. And they'd be the first to tell you so.

Politics in this country needs a right, left and centre. The problem as it stands now is that it has only a right and a centre. NO one speaks for the left, no one stands for the left in this political system. Don't try to tell me the Democrats speak for the left -- I'll have to hunt you down so I can laugh in your face. This country needs a goddamned third party to make its existing political system work. Well -- that's oxymoronic; the existing political system doesn't work; it needs to be reformed, with two major changes: a third party and instand runoff voting. Oh, boy -- I feel a "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition" moment coming on. Let's leave it at two major changes, even though I could name at least three others now I've got started...

So. As usual I began this piece meaning it as a short mentino of a neat recognition by CJO, and turning it into a longish diatribe on a variety of subjects. C'est la vie.

Dunno 'bout you... (10.74 / 27)

But it made MY year so far.

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

Kudos Maryscott (8.75 / 4)
and many congrat's...you well deserve this.

WE! (8.88 / 8)

That's my whole point!

WE deserve this!!!

I am no Markos, by god -- this is a community blog, and this blog would be NOTHING without the community. Period.

Sure, without me, it'd be like Disneyland without Mickey Mouse -- but without the rest of the people who contribute to it, it would be like Disneyland without the REST of the Disney characters, you dig?

Oy, MSOC slaughters another metaphor. Simile. Shit.

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

Yes, but w/o you (7.50 / 4)
all these great talents you have brought here would not have migrated to this site.  You draw wonderful people to you and create an atmosphere in which they can blossom.

Y'know?  You picked them, they picked you.  'nuff said :)

[ Parent ]
Ms. O'Connor (7.67 / 6)
besides that i am happy for you, and happy that you are happy, I don't know what to say.

So, for once...

"Doubt is not an agreeable condition, but certainty is an absurd one." -Voltaire
Ah, my dear Voltaire, doubt is an acquired and cultivated taste, like Laphroaig Whisky or fine truffles, and quite as exquisite.

Mazel Tov! (9.00 / 6)
I'm glad that we got this recognition.  I haven't really looked back since I got here.  You, Maryscott have done a fabulous job here and I appreciate some of the difficulties you have had to deal with.  I am a leftist and mostly feel very comfortable here, thanks.

My will is easy to decide, for I have nothing to divide. My kin won't need to fuss and moan Moss don't cling to a rolling stone. -- Joe Hill,

Now comes the hard part (7.50 / 4)
living up to the hype without losing (your, ours, his, her) soul.  So a toast to ya'll on a very fine day. Peace

congrats, msoc (8.60 / 5)
High praise indeed. I'm honored to be part of this motley collection of drunks, miscreants, fools and dreamers.

"I have an existential map. It has "You are here" written all over it."

Steven Wright

Well I'll cop to fool and dreamer (7.00 / 7)
and I was a drunk before 1983 but I was going to deny being a miscreant until I looked it up.
1. A disbeliever; a heretic.
2. A scoundrel; an evildoer; a villain

and the first definition is me, not so much that second one although there might be an old girlfriend who thinks of me as a scoundrel but I swear....

My will is easy to decide, for I have nothing to divide. My kin won't need to fuss and moan Moss don't cling to a rolling stone. -- Joe Hill,

I love that. They've read Gottlieb.

I hate the word "pride". One of the 7 deadly sins. But there are times when there just isn't a better word. You should be proud Maryscott. Not because MLW was noticed, but because of what you've done. The recognition is well earned. Thank you.

to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance .  G. Washington

i don't consider myself (8.25 / 4)
prolific, profound, perspicacious, peripatetic, passionate, perceptive; brilliant, bold, bright, burning or a beautiful writer, but i've been made to feel welcome here.

i appreciate it.

Wonderful news...congrats, MSOC (7.40 / 5)
I couldn't help but notice some other blogs aren't referenced in their recommended links...hm.

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

blogmother (10.00 / 5)
Kudos for what you have achieved - and what personal costs you have paid to keep it all going on - for us as well as for yourself. I am several weeks away from my one year anniversary with MLW. I am constantly amazed that this exceptional writing, thinking community welcomes me.

What a wonderful anniversary present, this recognition from these gifted writiers. I will keep it as my own personal validation. thankyouverymuch

The rest of you and you, Maryscott, do with it what you will.

kate... (0.00 / 0)
me too!  April 26th, one year for me!  (hey you still on for qotd tomorrow?)

[ Parent ]

I saw the exchange with Miki. Glad you clarified.

[ Parent ]
cool. (0.00 / 0)
(you have scheduled ones, so it wasn't to you, just anyone who desires to pop in)

When's your anniversary?

[ Parent ]
March 30th (10.00 / 1)
In many ways this seems incorrect. I feel it has been several years. Amazing. I think of it as a school for me.

[ Parent ]
Well, Maryscott.....You must be walking on air... (6.67 / 3)
Congratulations, MSOC, on a job well done.

Ahhhh....Life goes on.

Clearly, the animals put you over the top...Congratulations! (8.40 / 5)

fantastic (7.00 / 4)
I love this.

-pyrrho-

Yay! Hooray! (8.75 / 4)
[Wild applause, much confetti thrown in air.]

I'm glad you got this notice.

I'm even more glad you can accept the compliment for what it is. That's important.

Put this in you virtual scrapbook, and when things get maddening, yank it out again and give it a good, long look. And smile. Because you deserve it.

Rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength. --Eric Hoffer

my faith in you (9.60 / 5)
my faith in you, and I use the word "faith" because of the risk and basic non-pyrrhoness of it from my point of view, that is, in a self-effacing sense... as if I should never have faith, but find that I do... anyway... my confidence in you starting a community blog has to do with your ability to find cool smart people, with the fact that people you come to value and that really come to value you see a bit deeply and think that way as well... or I get that sense, have had that experience of you.

you could change your writing style, I wouldn't care, that is not the level I ever connected with you on, it was the conversation and the ideas they reveal, and your dedication to what makes thinking healthy.

on this... a different subject

"NO shame in that, by the way; the shame is in their having been tagged as "left" or, even more laughable, "leftist," when they're so obviously not. And they'd be the first to tell you so."

yeah, they'll admit it on their blogs in comments, but NEVER to the NYT et al, because Markos went for that market, there is a great video on youtube in which Kos talks about going for the liberal market... it's rather disgusting.

What a bunch of energy he's wasting, other people's energy, and taking profit, and demanding thanks for the gravy trian he's riding and clearly expects to keep producing gravy for a long time to come.  OTOH, there are still many making good use of the medium while it lasts.

Eh (8.50 / 4)
he's just someone who brought another little step in a path that will part ways with him, in the long run. The medium is much bigger than he understands, that's all.

Kudos to this site for remaining open, in the best sense of that word.

nice vindication for you.

it couldn't happen to a nicer blog.

Stellar writers, all well above reproach. (0.00 / 0)
This commendation is well deserved because I can't think of another liberal site whose views fit so well with these writers. Liberals, yes. All of them.

So what does that mean? It is just the simple act of telling the truth. No bullshit, no deception, no lies. Just telling it like it is. If one has any concerns whatsoever about fellow human beings, then this is indeed recognition of the highest sort.

Silence is not an option. It merely helps to perpetuate human rights injustices.

Awesome Props! (0.00 / 0)
Well deserved - congratulations MSOC =)

I hadn't checked.

I really, really really hate that airport.

Oh, I dunno, Mirrim, ever been to the one in (0.00 / 0)

My last visit to that one certainly taught me to appreciate O'Hare!

(Don't ask!?) ;-)

Once again you are surprised by success.  That is an impressive endorsement that you got there--generous temperament, fighter for liberation of animals (including two-leggeds, I guess).

Open-minded. (9.00 / 1)
Perhaps it really may be just that simple----for Maryscott to have an open-mind & provide a forum for other folks, MOST of whom may be open-minded, & willing to write here, becomes the essence of "liberalism."

Oh Hell.  It really is that simple, isn't it?

For all of those who no longer chose to imbibe alcoholic beverages, here's one for you! a glass of the cheapest red available----paisano.  Cin cin.  Skal.  Prost.  Sante.  Salut or salud.  Slainte.  L'chaim.  [Sorry 'bout the lack of diacritical marks, ooops.]  And in honorable memory of Seamus Garvey, "Cheers, all the best to ya' mate."

links are by definition reciprocal, (9.50 / 2)
a relationship between two sites, that reflects upon both the linked and the linker. their linking here should not ony be taken as an affirmation that you have brought together a great group of writers, maryscott, but also as a recognition that they want to be seen as savvy in this brave new world we're part of. they're not just doing you a favor, they're doing themselves a favor by showing that they know about this place as well, if that makes any sense to you.
