Rahm Emanuel Tells Dems to Stay Off Colbert, Silent on Fox Debate

by: thereisnospoon

Thu Mar 15, 2007 at 04:52:15 AM PDT

If this doesn't prove the idiocy of DLC Democrats like Rahm Emanuel, nothing will: Emanuel is telling Dems to stay off of the Colbert Report.

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.), the Democratic Caucus chairman, has told new Democratic members of Congress to steer clear of Stephen Colbert, or at least his satirical Comedy Central program, "The Colbert Report."

"He said don't do it ... it's a risk and it's probably safer not to do it," said Rep. Steve Cohen. But the freshman lawmaker from Tennessee taped a segment that last week was featured in the 32nd installment of the "Better Know a District" series. Colbert asked Cohen whether he was a black woman. He isn't.

thereisnospoon :: Rahm Emanuel Tells Dems to Stay Off Colbert, Silent on Fox Debate

And what career-ending, risky offenses is Emanuel referencing?

Eyes (but thankfully, not heads) roll in Emanuel's office when other freshmen stumble, such as the time Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) got into a debate about the merits of throwing kittens into a wood-chipper, or when Rep. Zack Space (D-Ohio) explained that he is not his predecessor, convicted felon Bob Ney (R).

Yes, moves like this could seriously jeopardize Democratic majorities!  The voters really care about what misstatements candidates might make on one of the most popular comedy shows on television.  I bow before the political astuteness of Mr. Emanuel.  May I be graced with 1/10th his wisdom and copious political acumen.

And what other bits of advice does Mr. Emanuel have for Democrats?

One freshman who has been on the receiving end of Emanuel's "tough love" is Rep. Steve Kagen (Wis.), who boasted to a group of anti-war activists that he had dressed down President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, during a White House reception. The administration denied the story.

But Emanuel threw a fit. Kagen's staff was hauled into the Democratic Caucus's office for lessons on how to handle the media, Democratic sources said.

Rep. Nancy Boyda (D-Kan.) said, "It took [Emanuel] three weeks to come down off of the ceiling" after she refused to accept the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's (DCCC) assistance in her bid to win reelection in 2008.

Boyda said Emanuel would "worry until November 4, 2008, but he says it in a very caring, grandmotherly way."

So let's see here.  Emanuel has advised Dems to

1) not appear on Colbert lest they, too, receive the mojo of the Colbert Effect;

2) not dress down Karl Rove--or even dare to pretend to dress down Karl Rove (goodness knows, even if you don't have a spine, don't even appear to act like you had a spine);

3) not refuse the spineless "assistance" of campaign consultants like Bob Shrum.

I swear to the god of your choice--Emanuel must be the biggest concern troll in the Democratic Party at this point.  He spends so much time telling Democrats what not to do--for their own sake, of course--that it would be nice to see him tell Democrats what to actually stand up and do for a change.

Actually, I don't want to see what Emanuel tells Democrats to do: according to Matt Stoller, Emanuel is apparently busy as a bee using his power to "train" our congresspeople in the mystical DLC arts:

From what I understand from talking to a few progressives on the Hill, the freshmen in Congress are being extensively 'trained' by Rahm Emanuel (news, bio, voting record)'s DLC band of consultants and pollsters, which is one reason they've been silent.  Carol Shea-Porter is an exception, and notice how she was shut out of the DCCC's front line program.  Also notice how our only real specific policy concern to protect our own ability to organize - net neutrality - just isn't really on the legislative radar right now (though this could change).

But what is most galling about Emanuel's advice to stay off of Colbert?  His absolute silence about the Nevada Fox Noise debate.  Seriously--do a search on Google for any keywords related to Emanuel, Fox, Fox News, Nevada or Debate: not a word.  Nada.  Zilch.  It's a fairly good guess, though, that like most of his DLC pals, he fully supported Dems appearing on a program whose sole intent is their humiliation and defeat.

Honestly--How bizarro does your world have to be, and what kind of fantasy bubble must you be living in, for your advice as a leading Democrat to the Democratic faithful is go on Fox, but stay off of Colbert?  What kind of total short-sighted idiocy is that?

I don't know, but I want no piece of it.  And I hope with fervor that our elected Dems want no piece of it, either.

Of course (7.00 / 2)
Cowardice begets cowardice. It's pathetic that they pulled out of the Fox debate. And it's pathetic that they're scared of Colbert. This is all image politics. No substance at all.

what if from the right wingnuts in my office (0.00 / 0)
Overheard:
"What if the leading republican candidates refused to be in a debate sponsored by MSNBC and moderated by Keith Olbermann?"

Forget the straw man argument - the basic premise is not invalid.

I know there is no left propaganda "news" network to rival the ugliness and smeariness of Faux.

Bottom line: As illegitimate as Foxnews is, a conservative titfortat "I won't appear on your debate either" would be an unwelcome escalation in the polarity of our electorate.

I was, at first, elated that my guy, John Edwards refused to debate in Nevada on Fox.

However vile the Foxnews network is, exclusion is not a liberal or (small d) democratic principle.

My favorite thing to do is to go where I've never been. Diane Arbus

What? (9.00 / 1)
You never heard of the Clinton News Network?

Certainly you recognized CBS' smear tactics in the last presidential election.

Perhaps you should watch more of Fox.  Just stay away from Gibson.  And anything with Steve Doocy.

The trick is to be open.  I bet very few here realize that Chris Wallace nailed Doug Feith a few weeks ago.  It wouldn't fit with their prejudice.

I don't think Alan Colmes and Greta Van Susteren, two of the four prime time personalities, and both liberal Democrats, would think of themselves as a right wing smear machine.

I don't think you can say that Eleanor Clift, Eric Burns, Mara Liasson (My god, she's a graduate of NPR, a left wing smear machine!), Juan
Williams, Neal Gabler, Geraldo Rivera, or Mort Kondrake would consider themselves right wing smearers.  Nor would "Fox News contributers" David Corn, Geraldine Ferraro, Harold Ford, Jr., or Democratic strategist Bob Beckel likely consider themselves right wing smearers.

Al Sharpton appears often on the network and appears to me to have no trouble.

And any network that lets you look at Laurie Dhue can't be all bad.  (I must note that I made this last note on another board a couple of years ago, and the board ultra leftist noted that he didn't like her because she had "fat ankles.")

As for Gibson, he is unrelentingly ideological, and never lets the truth be an obstacle.  He's a lot like Olberman in that regard.  Both of these people play to those who believe alike, not to those who think for themselves.

How about (0.00 / 0)
making a phoney charge backed up by phoney and counterfeit documents.

Rather's producer allowed her personal vendetta against Bush to besmirch the reputation of both Rather and the network, all because she saw this as her last chance to stick it to Bush.

Maybe you could answer me a question that has been plaguing me for a couple of years now.  The White House, or various other government or Republican operatives, are often said to have "smeared" Joe Wilson in the month after Wilson's July 6, 2003 media blitz.  To what, exactly, are they referring?

If you know.

asdf (9.00 / 1)
Ahh...the 60 minutes piece on Bush's national guard duty. I remember thinking after it aired (I didn't see it) that it was typical 60 minutes kind of stuff, but that it really wasn't that big of a deal. Most people that opposed bush pretty much already took it for granted that his daddy set up the cushy reserve duty, and that he probably didn't fulfill all his responsibilities. His supporters probably thought the same thing, and their best defense against the charges was that there was no absolute proof.

When the charges of fake proof came out, it just seemed like a really stupid thing for 60 minutes to do, though ultimately I don't think many people changed their votes as a result of seeing the story, and then changed back when they found out the so-called proof really wasn't.

While I don't think it changes that fact pattern much, I do recall hearing an interview on the radio with either Rather's producer (who I think was fired almost on the spot) or maybe someone else who wrote a book about the ordeal. According to the interviewee, the charges that the evidence was faked also couldn't be proven. The first proof that came out was that the documents were typed in a font that didn't exist when the documents were supposed to have been produced. (As I recall, this was a Drudge discovery or disclosure) This woman being interviewed said that some thousands of documents from that same time period had been found with the exact same font, thereby dismissing the proof that the documents were forgeries.

Whether there has been other proof discovered since then, either in support of the documents' authenticity or supporting the forgery theory, I don't know. So at this point, I'm not convinced either way. Maybe it was a politically driven smear, or a polticially driven, but accruate,  disclosure. Either way, I have doubts about its political value, then and now.

With regards to the Joe Wilson "smear". I'm kinda with you on that. The disclosure of his wife's identity as a CIA agent, while possibly reckless, was accurate, so not a smear. There were claims thrown around that he lied when he said he was sent to Niger by the vice president, despite the fact that he never exactly claimed that. Maybe thats a smear. There were innacurate assertions that his wife actually picked him to go to Niger. That might qualify as a smear, though incidental in the big picture. These last 2 could be used (and probably were) to unfairly discount his credibility. But neither, some 4 years later (or is it 5?) are the meat of the whole Wilson/Plame/Libby affair.

to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance .  G. Washington

[ Parent ]
I think you pretty much nailed it (0.00 / 0)
And you have my admiration.  It's rare.

But let me just rhapsodize on a couple of the points.....

Most people that opposed bush pretty much already took it for granted that his daddy set up the cushy reserve duty, and that he probably didn't fulfill all his responsibilities.

To me, this was a complete non-issue.  In my town, everyone got on either the National Guard list or the Military Academy list (to buy you at least four years).  Some got on both lists.  But no one from my town ever got into the national Guard because there were no big shots around with enough pull to get them in.  We did have a Representative who actually lived in the town, and there was one kid who got an appointment to West Point.

So, I certainly can't blast Bush for doing what almost any red-blooded American boy would have done if he could, back then.

And i think it is clear that he fulfilled his duties to the satisfaction of the Air National Guard.  Most arguments to the contrary cite abstract standards published at the time, and cite lack of documentation that they were exactly met.  But those actually in the Guard often say that these were guidelines, and actual practice might differ.

According to the interviewee, the charges that the evidence was faked also couldn't be proven.

Pedantically true, I'd say.  Since the documents were copies, and no original documents have ever been found, this, to use an analogy, kicks sand in the face of the umpire trying to see the play.  The one study i could find that placed it as "not digital" and which is often cited, could not name a typewriter that used the font.

This woman being interviewed said that some thousands of documents from that same time period had been found with the exact same font, thereby dismissing the proof that the documents were forgeries.

No.  If her claim can be substantiated, it merely refutes the claim that these documents could not have been typed on a typewriter of that period.  It says nothing about forgeries.  A forger could, and might choose to, find an old typewriter to type his forgery.

Either way, I have doubts about its political value, then and now.

I tend to agree.  I feel the same way about the Swift Boat smear.

There were claims thrown around that he lied when he said he was sent to Niger by the vice president, despite the fact that he never exactly claimed that.

I have found no instance where Wilson actually says that pubically, but from the reports of reporters, and reading between the lines of articles he was the source for, it seems highly likely that this was part of the story that he was peddling to any and all comers in the spring and early summer of 2003.  I don't think it was a lie because I think he actually thought this.

I must also add that Cheney's response is also understandable, since he knew that he didn't send anyone, and when the rumours that Wilson said that he did came up, he naturally wanted to know who did send Wilson.  Cheney didn't actually learn about the trip until, I think, March 2003.

There were innacurate assertions that his wife actually picked him to go to Niger.

One CIA agent involved with setting up the trip testified that Mrs. Wilson "offered up his name."  All agree that she was involved in the decision.

However, this doesn't mean much, as some of the righties have howled, citing Wilson's lack of credentials.  In fact, Wilson had made a previous trip to Niger for the CIA.  He was sort of the natural choice.

Another thing that is sometimes called a smear is the claim that he was wrong in what he said, which claim is also accurate.  To defend Wilson, he had no (legal) way to know that his report was taken as evidence to support the claim in the 16 words, as well as an undermining of the claim removed from the Cincinnati speech.  That these two claims were confused, even by Wilson, but also by Rice and Tenet, as well as on an ongoing basis by pundits today, just kills me.  It keeps alive a non-controversy.

you know what? (11.00 / 1)
if I were a Republican, I wouldn't refuse a debate on MSNBC--but I sure as heck would refuse a debate moderated by Olbermann.  You would have to be stupid to be a Republican and accept that.

That's what's so infuriating about the whole thing: they aren't trying to equate Olbermann and Fox; they're trying to equate Blitzer or Amanpour and Fox.  And that's just unacceptable.

Didn't every single candidate who appeared on The Colbert Report win election in '06?

Sound bites (0.00 / 0)
I think Yarmouth handled the whole thing wonderfully, and whoever coached him got it exactly right.  You never lost the sense that he was playing along with a joke.

I think the fear is that these politicians will b=produce sound bites that can be used againxt them in an election.  Politicians have been known to do that.  ALL politicians.

Remember the Florida politician who was led into endorsing the use of cocaine?  I can't even remember if he was a Republican or a member of the Democrat party.

I wouldn't be surprised if Republicans themselves haven't been warned off of this Colbert segment.

Finally, if the debate was canceled because it was on Fox, then those who canceled it are complete and utter idiots.  It doesn't make sense on any level.  Do YOU want to vote for someone to be president, and who will have to face people like Putin and what's his name in Iran if they can be so easily intimidated that they won't engage in a debate among Democrats just because it is broadcast by Fox?

I didn't think so.

OK, who else do the Democrats have?  How about Harold Ford, Jr.?

And Harold Ford, Jr., (9.00 / 1)
will now serve as the "Democratic" analyst for Fox News during the 2008 campaign season.  Yes, this is the policy of the DLC.

I just hope Rahm's advice is shunned, as his handpicked candidates, particularly Duckworth and Lois Murphy, could not win even though they received lavish support from Rahm and from the DCCC.  And since when is Rahm one to eschew political theater?  But I guess only he reserves the right to be a hypocrite.

So Sayeth The Bagman (7.00 / 3)
The slimy little prick is nothing but a conniving, reptilian bagman for the corporate whores that have usurped the Democratic party, sold out the unions, fucked over the middle class and are essentially partners with the globalist thugs who are selling off our country piece by piece like unscruplous, greedhead slumlords bleeding a property before dumping it into receivership.

Just remember how this little snake refused to give full backing to anti-war progressive candidates last year that would have resulted in a landslide and a mandate for reform.

At least the Republican devils are up front in their vile wickedness while the DLC and it's hacks like Rahm 'shit eyes' Emanuel are more akin to Judas Iscariot.

He picked up his thirty pieces of silver from the company store long before he became the chief mouthpiece for Republican-lite, offshoring our jobs phony opposition party.

Just my two cents

Emanuel complained about this (0.00 / 0)
and it wasn't reported for three day's.  In his speech before (AIPAC) American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, Obama said,"The Palestinian people have suffered as much as any people in history."  Obama has cannon balls and they fit him well.  Now if he would ask for the firing of Pace, Gonzales, Rove, Mueller and Nicklson he might help the cause.  Peace

In Obama's defense (0.00 / 0)
at least he didn't say that Palestinians are articulate.

But what an idiot statement.  Every candidate makes idiot statements, of course.  And the other side usually picks up on them and uses them, especially in this sound bite era of gotcha politics.

For the record, since there were Palestinians, the Kurds have suffered much more.

Why do you think this is not generally recognized?

Rahm Emanuel's dumbassery explained (8.00 / 1)
He says dumbass things and makes dumbass choices.  It is dumbassery to try and dissuade fellow dem's from going on a dumbass comedy show that is amoung the most popular in the country amoung us dumbasses who love it.  He is too big a dumbass to see that exposure on Colbert is a great way to increase popularity by his dumbass peers.  Rahm Emanuel is a dumbass.  Colbert is cool.  Humor is cool.  Ratings are cool.

Plain enough?

One point on which agree with Emanuel (0.00 / 0)
Kagen should not have bragged about dressing down Rove.

Please note that it wasn't the dressing down itself, it was the bragging about it.  I totally get that.

The other stuff, however, is fucking stupid, especially with Colbert.

Zack Space (0.00 / 0)
is my Congressman. I helped his campaign and voted for him. I laughed my ass off when I saw him on Colbert. It's nice to see my congressman laughing at himself (and he didn't get suckered into appearing, I assure you), especially after that Bob Ney fiasco. I even emailed my support of his appearance. I know, a little corny, but I'm still hoping that Space won't turn into one of those guys that forgets from whence he came.:)

Space (0.00 / 0)
As I recall, Zack Space didn't even say anything embarrassing to himself. He just had to repeatedly correct Colbert when he pretended to think Space was Bob Ney. Isn't that right?

The only Congressional Reps I can recall looking bad on "Better Know A District" are the guy who couldn't name the Ten Commandments, and Eleanor Holmes Norton, who gets all pissy and seems to think she can "beat" Colbert by mocking the French pronunciation of his name. So, lessons for those who might be on the show: don't be a shallow hypocrite, and relax and have a sense of humor. Is that so hard?
