John Edwards to Discuss Wife's Health, Campaign, and Country

by: Betsy L. Angert

(John Edwards: "Incredibly Tough."

John Edwards: "If He Can Handle This, He Can Handle Anything."

Dude. I bet he just went up 7 points. Sorry to go all wonky on y'all, because I AM emotional right now, too -- but I can

Please view the Edwards interview. Charlie Rose: December 14, 2004

The news and notes prompt this treatise. As I sat here tonight, gathering my thoughts, a voice heard rooms away jarred me.  I could barely understand the words.  I only knew something was wrong, terribly, terribly wrong.  A journalist said something of John Edwards and the effect of this news on his campaign.  Recalling how important family is to Presidential candidate Edwards, the history of his wife's cancer, I wondered.  Only weeks ago we witnessed, Senator Edwards is able to weather media storms. The tone of the newscaster led me to believe this event was a tempest.

Betsy L. Angert :: John Edwards to Discuss Wife's Health, Campaign, and Country

Last evening I wrote of Dennis Kucinich, a candidate for President in 2008. Several Progressives relented; although they agree with Congressman Kucinich philosophically, they fear he does not have a chance. Charisma is not his strong suit. Popularity equates to electability. Many mused they were considering former Vice Presidential contender John Edwards. The Senator is powerful, persuasive, and principled, and profound on numerous issues. As of last evening and this morning, the persons in the cyberspace community were claiming John Edwards is their choice. For these Liberals a small step into the White House may yield benefits for Americans. A foot in the door is better than nothing at all.

In reading the comments on my Kucinich missive, I concluded John Edwards may be the Left's last hope in 2008. Then, tonight, I heard; perhaps his campaign may be in trouble. Bloggers  are not the cause; nor have they led the candidate down a path of "crisis management."

John Edwards has long been known as a family man, a gentle soul deeply connected to his family. His wife, Elizabeth is his best friend. We know that years ago Missus Edwards discovered a lump in her breast. She took treatment and seemed to be in remission. However, tonight there is concern. The Washington Post reports . . .

John Edwards to Discuss Wife's Health
By Nedra Pickler
The Associated Press.
Wednesday, March 21, 2007; 11:21 PM

WASHINGTON -- Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards accompanied his wife, Elizabeth, who has been treated for breast cancer, on a doctor's visit Wednesday. His campaign said they would hold a news conference in their hometown Thursday to discuss her health.

Campaign officials refused to answer any questions about what the Edwardses learned at the doctor's appointment or how it might affect his candidacy. Edwards had cut short a trip to Iowa Tuesday night to be with his wife Wednesday but still attended a barbecue fundraiser later in the evening in their hometown of Chapel Hill, N.C.

The campaign had said that Mrs. Edwards, 57, had a follow-up appointment to a routine test she had Monday. The campaign explained that she had similar follow-ups in the past but they always resulted in a clean bill of health.

The campaign refused to elaborate Wednesday. Family friends said Wednesday night that they didn't know of any new complications to her health.

"Her health has been so good for so long," said Kate Michelman, an Edward's adviser who was planning to work closely with Elizabeth Edwards to appeal to female voters around the country.

Mrs. Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer in the final days of the 2004 campaign, when her husband was the Democratic vice presidential nominee. He announced the diagnosis the day after he and presidential nominee John Kerry lost the election.

Mrs. Edwards wrote about her life, including her breast cancer treatment that included chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, in a book published last year called "Saving Graces."

The Edwards family has faced unexpected and unwanted traumas before. They have experienced deep loss, a passing no one would wish for. Elizabeth Edwards spoke of this...

Mrs. Edwards spoke about the death of her son and her cancer in an Associated Press interview last year.

"During the (2004) campaign, people who knew we had lost a son said, 'You are so strong,' and when I had breast cancer people would say, 'You are so strong,' and I thought, 'They don't know that there's a trick to being strong, and the trick is that nobody does it alone,'" she said. "I wanted, from the perspective of someone going through it, not tell them what to do, but show them what great support I got."

'Tis true, people help each other. Vigor is the outgrowth of love and care. Elizabeth Edwards has received many good graces. She has given much to her family, friends, familiars, and to those she touched from afar. Even now, her story moves us. Individuals relate to her illness. They too seek a enduring cure for cancer.

To date, we know nothing with certainty; yet, the news of a press conference following a visit to the physician seems ominous. We can only hope all is well, and Elizabeth Edwards is in good health. Perchance this time loss is not the news. Gain might reign.

The Edwards family has been through much. They have our support, our sympathy, and I wish them well.

As I write, I hear a word of optimism. The broadcaster announces, 'a close friend and adviser stated in a comment to the media, "Do not assume the worse."' I will not. It seems to me this family is strong. They have experienced many challenges in their lives. Together they grow greater. Perchance, the Edwards family serves as our example. They teach us to be courageous, compassionate, and genuinely concerned for family, friends, and for our future. May peace be with them, with us, one and all.

Heard about it this morning (10.50 / 4)
and rushed to my pc, thank you Betsy for writing it up.

Edwards, imo, right now is the one candidate talking about concrete issues, not just floundering around looking for straw polls to tell him how to offend the least people.

I have had several scares with lumps (all nothing) and know the terror which they may be going through.

I hope she is well, and he will not drop out.  I sincerely think he and Gore are the two people who really still see the position as service not power, in the whole pack of them.

Well, Kucinich too...I just am not as familiar with him.

It makes me incredibly sad.  Edwards has/had?? a real chance.  This is what pisses me off at "the higher power, if there is one" why do horrible things happen to good people and leave our country floundering at the hands of snakes?

    Elizabeth exquisite (10.00 / 1)
    Dear Diane . . .

I wrote in a sleepy stupor.  I heard the news just as it broke, late last evening [Eastern Daylight Savings Time.]

You may be interested in reading my Kucinich treatise for further information.  I link to his writings on each of the issues.

I meant to write on the manner in which Edwards entered the race.  I thought it exquisite!  Elizabeth, is, was, and will be quite an asset.  She is glorious, as a person, all on her own.

This family is among the rare.  They are truly and deeply connected.  That alone would be wondrous to behold, daily, in the White House.

It is only the giving that makes us what [who] we are. - Ian Anderson. Jethro Tull . . . Betsy

    Sending Warm Thoughts (9.50 / 2)
of Love and Healing and waiting anxiously for the news conference.

Doing My Part For The Left,Send me to Netroots Nation

When I first read the news last night... (9.20 / 5)
my stomach turned.  My first thoughts were for Mrs. Edwards.  She seems to be a truly wonderful person. She has reached out to the blogosphere, posting at many sites (I believe she has even registered an account here.)  And not, like many politicians, just to be heard.  She actually interacts with, GASP, the people.  To many politicians voters are to be talked at, not to.  Elizabeth Edwards breaks that mold, much to the benefit of her husband.

My second thought was for the Edwards candidacy.  As it appears Gore is unlikely to enter the race, Edwards is the only candidate I currently feel comfortable with.  If he were to leave the race to be with his wife, something entirely reasonable, I would be left without a candidate.

    Here's hoping for the best.

Only solitary men know the full joys of friendship. Others have their family; but to a solitary and an exile, his friends are everything. - Willa Cather

    the best (10.50 / 4)
    Dear billybush  . . .

I just watched most of the press conference.  Upon reflection, I think it is Elizabeth's love of people, the common folk, and the country that leads John to go on.

Let us hope that she reads My Left Wing and knows how we love her, as a person!

    No withdrawal from campaign (10.60 / 5)
her cancer is back but the campaign goes on, she'll be undergoing lifetime treatment but is hopeful and feels good now.

    That's the very short version.

She is so wonderfully warm (10.60 / 5)
and the two of them together are -- how else can I say it? -- just a hoot.  The whole explanation of how she cracked the rib which led to the discovery of the tumor....

Until the possibility of Edwards' withdrawal was waived before me, I hadn't realized how much I wanted him to run.

Yeah -- he's my guy.  Besides, just look at that hair!

Leave the cat alone, for what has the cat done, that you should so afflict it with tape? - Ian Frazier, Lamentations of the Father

    Yeah (11.00 / 2)
it's nice to see a couple in politics that are so authentic and seem to, well, genuinely love each other.

    Sad how rare that is.

I'm entirely undecided on everything involving presidents and '08, but I'm glad they're pushing on.

    [ Parent ]
    how can anyone not (10.43 / 7)
just love those two and how they interact?

If nothing else this gives america a true vision of what they are made of!

    damn.  want them.

    Yup. (10.40 / 5)
I'm through waiting for Gore.  If the Edwards can carry on in spite of this, what's Gore's excuse for staying out of the race?  The thought of losing Edwards made me realize how much I value him.  I just dropped him a C-note.

    John Edwards: "Incredibly Tough."

John Edwards: "If He Can Handle This, He Can Handle Anything."

Dude. I bet he just went up 7 points. Sorry to go all wonky on y'all, because I AM emotional right now, too -- but I can't help thinking that this press conference, and Elizabeth's parting shot about John's toughness, his ability to handle not only the stress of a Presidential campaign but also the stress of losing a teenaged son, the stress of a wife's cancer and RETURNED cancer and ANOTHER campaign being PROOF that he is WAY tough enough to be President -- OH. My. GAWD. -- this man just SOARED to the top of the heap, if they can use it properly.

love and peace are the only absolutes (11.00 / 1)
    Dear Maryscott . . .

I thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I have long believed love and peace are the only absolutes.  Although I disdain the word "win," I do believe "Love always wins."  It is growth in my mind.  The "stay the course" mindset as it relates to war will always fail.  Violence is futile; it only begets greater hostility.

When people truly love, working to better a country for all and not just a few . . . it is a beautiful thing to behold.  If a show of genuine concern and affection bolsters the campaign, more power to love.  That, I think, is always the best!

    I love John Edwards (10.00 / 2)
I don't know yet if he's my guy. But I think he's a mensch. His policies and politics are as close to mine as any other announced candidate. His emphasis on poverty is something we don't hear from any other '08 candidate, and we should. He campaigns decently. Something the campaign certainly would have missed had he dropped out.

A headline at rawstory today says that some gop dude says Gore is in for sure. (i don't know who, didn't click on the article). Gore/Edwards? Yeah, sounds like a winner to me.

Prayers, thoughts, hopes, wishes, and candles. whatever works for Elizabeth. For her, her husband and kids, for the country, the cancer should just fuck off and die.

    John Edwards seems sensational, yet. . . (0.00 / 0)
    Dear Kane in CA . . .

As a person, John Edwards seems sensational.  Elizabeth would probably get my vote.  For now, I am voting on policies and principles.  I am planning to cast my ballot for Kucinich.  I long for a true Progressive to help us grow greater.

I want no funds for war.  I yearn for Universal Health care.  I want to abolish the Patriot Act.  A guaranteed quality education for all warms the cockles of my heart!  Ah, an environmental policy that grows life would be great!

Tonight as I listened to discussion on the Veterans Hospital and heard the infrastructure debate, I cringed.  I am tired of "no new taxes," a war, an education policy, police, fire, and library systems never funded by the people.  You get what you pay for and Americans do not wish to pay for services, roads, and schools . . . might I go on.  We let a President or Congress propose and pass deficit budgets and then wonder why we are in this, that, and the other messes.  I want an Executive and Representatives that work for the people, not for business or personal gain.

We may think we are paying a lot for health care or housing.  We are subsidizing corporations and corrupt authoritarian practices.  I want to place government back in the hands of the people!  Levies, when applied aptly help each of us.  Union gives strength.  If people felt as though they were getting something for their tax dollars, as they once did, I think they would be happy to give to the greater good.

I am sorry.  I think the Edwards family is wonderful.  However, in looking through his policies, I think he does not go as far as I might.  His health care plan alone illustrates my concerns.  At least in the primaries, when I am able to speak fully, I prefer more than I have heard from Edwards thus far.

I'll most likely vote for the both of them (9.00 / 2)
When I heard the news there would a press conference I had a sense the cancer was back and immediately thought they will not quit.

Elizabeth Edwards believes to her very soul that this country needs her husband to be president.  She believes this country deserves what John Edwards has to offer in so many ways.

After watching the press conference this morning, John Edwards has a strong chance to get my vote.  I wish his health care plan was better but at least he's talking about it and has drafted a plan, and I have tremendous respect for his stance and work on the poverty in this country.

But now, above all else, we have seen the courage of these two people, we knew how committed they are to each other, now we see the committment they have for the betterment of this country.

And above that, John Edwards was smart enough to see in Elizabeth, at a very young age, the caliber of person she is.  A day after being diagnosed again with a recurrence of cancer, she tells it like it is, they don't hide behind a political wall of mystery, they put it right out there, can't really recall seeing that for a very long time.

If, and the chances are good that I will, I give John Edwards my vote, it will be a vote for Elizabeth Edwards as well, even moreso because she is the navigator, the barometer, the heart and the soul of John Edwards.

America won't like her as First Lady the way they fawn over Laura, Elizabeth will be up front with everything, she will be involved, she will not be silent, she will tell it like it is, on everything.

I knew they wouldn't quit, it was just confirmed this morning.

I will not die an unlived life. Fuck em, I will not live in fear, I will live out loud and on the record.

"Elizabeth Edwards believes to her very soul" (11.00 / 1)
    Dear caliberal  . . .

I am there with you, excluding the vote.  As people, as a family, as a couple they are sensational.  My hope is that if I vote more Progressively, perhaps the popular candidate might adopt policies that serve the people well.  I want more than a leaning.  I may be titling at windmills; however, if I do not dream the impossible dream and work to bring it about, it will never be.

I do think it would be beautiful for Elizabeth if her husband helps move this nation and world towards the interest of the people.  I believe she wants that.

Elizabeth will be up front with everything, she will be involved, she will not be silent, she will tell it like it is, on everything.
