Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Dead at 84

by: Maryscott O'Connor

Wed Apr 11, 2007 at 20:49:11 PM PDT

Per NYT:

Kurt Vonnegut Is Dead at 84; Caught Imagination of His Age

By DINITIA SMITH

Published: April 12, 2007

Kurt Vonnegut, whose dark comic talent and urgent moral vision in novels like "Slaughterhouse-Five," "Cat's Cradle" and "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater" caught the temper of his times and the imagination of a generation, died last night in Manhattan. He was 84 and had homes in Manhattan and in Sagaponack on Long Island.

His death was reported by the publisher Morgan Entrekin, a longtime family friend, who said Mr. Vonnegut suffered brain injuries as a result of a fall several weeks ago.

Mr. Vonnegut wrote plays, essays and short fiction. But it was his novels that became classics of the American counterculture, making him a literary idol, particularly to students in the 1960s and '70s. Dog-eared paperback copies of his books could be found in the back pockets of blue jeans and in dorm rooms on campuses throughout the United States.

Like Mark Twain, Mr. Vonnegut used humor to tackle the basic questions of human existence: Why are we in this world? Is there a presiding figure to make sense of all this, a god who in the end, despite making people suffer, wishes them well?

He also shared with Twain a profound pessimism. "Mark Twain," Mr. Vonnegut wrote in his 1991 book, "Fates Worse Than Death: An Autobiographical Collage," "finally stopped laughing at his own agony and that of those around him. He denounced life on this planet as a crock. He died."

Maryscott O'Connor :: Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Dead at 84

Not all Mr. Vonnegut's themes were metaphysical. With a blend of vernacular writing, science fiction, jokes and philosophy, he also wrote about the banalities of consumer culture, for example, or the destruction of the environment.

His novels - 14 in all - were alternate universes, filled with topsy-turvy images and populated by races of his own creation, like the Tralfamadorians and the Mercurian Harmoniums. He invented phenomena like chrono-synclastic infundibula (places in the universe where all truths fit neatly together) as well as religions, like the Church of God the Utterly Indifferent and Bokononism (based on the books of a black British Episcopalian from Tobago "filled with bittersweet lies," a narrator says).

The defining moment of Mr. Vonnegut's life was the firebombing of Dresden, Germany, by Allied forces in 1945, an event he witnessed firsthand as a young prisoner of war. Thousands of civilians were killed in the raids, many of them burned to death or asphyxiated. "The firebombing of Dresden," Mr. Vonnegut wrote, "was a work of art." It was, he added, "a tower of smoke and flame to commemorate the rage and heartbreak of so many who had had their lives warped or ruined by the indescribable greed and vanity and cruelty of Germany."

His experience in Dresden was the basis of "Slaughterhouse-Five," which was published in 1969 against the backdrop of war in Vietnam, racial unrest and cultural and social upheaval. The novel, wrote the critic Jerome Klinkowitz, "so perfectly caught America's transformative mood that its story and structure became best-selling metaphors for the new age."

To Mr. Vonnegut, the only possible redemption for the madness and apparent meaninglessness of existence was human kindness. The title character in his 1965 novel, "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater," summed up his philosophy:

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies - `God damn it, you've got to be kind.' "

Mr. Vonnegut eschewed traditional structure and punctuation. His books were a mixture of fiction and autobiography, prone to one-sentence paragraphs, exclamation points and italics. Graham Greene called him "one of the most able of living American writers." Some critics said he had invented a new literary type, infusing the science-fiction form with humor and moral relevance and elevating it to serious literature.

He was also accused of repeating himself, of recycling themes and characters. Some readers found his work incoherent. His harshest critics called him no more than a comic book philosopher, a purveyor of empty aphorisms.

"Fascism is attracting the dregs of humanity- people with a slovenly biography - sadists, mental freaks, traitors." - ILYA EHRENBURG

Peace out to a terrific writer (10.50 / 2)
Three novels that changed my life:

- The Sirens of Titan
- God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater
- Slaughterhouse Five

Thanks for everything, Kurt.

Po-tee weet?

"...psychopaths have little difficulty infiltrating the domains of...politics, law enforcement, (and) government." Dr. Robert Hare

I hope he's in a cool place. (11.00 / 2)

If any writer ever deserved to be, he does.

"Vietnam was an exercise in mistaken idealism; Iraq in cynical money-making. And there's no optimism or idealism now -- Americans are tired of knowledge. Our leaders, the C-students from Yale, know this. We're proud of being ignorant; that leaves virtue at our core. We aren't frazzled by knowledge like foreigners, so we can be trusted."

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

One nit (0.00 / 0)
"We aren't frazzled by knowledge like foreigners, so we can be trusted".

Most of the "knowledge" gained by our so-called superiors across the various ponds was done so from the lofty position of having their foot on the necks of the world's peoples.

They, like us, overstepped their own projected power, and lost their empires in the process.

So it was Power, followed by Loss, that led to this knowledge.

Which means we're on the path to enlightenment after all.

Just think, in 200 years dissident Chinese might question their government's place in world affairs and point to the wise old Americans, still mourning their losses.

Yeah... (9.00 / 1)

Here I am, busily, happily creating a fresh new post, first in a while, researching away, looking for a particular link, I find it -- and the breaking news link atop the page catches my eye:

oh, gawd.

Peace beyond this Earthly existence (11.00 / 1)
I recall reading volumes of his work.  It is hard to imagine such an icon lost.

May his passing be an indicator that this life here was complete.  There is more elsewhere.  An insightful, inspiring soul is called to be with those beyond this Earthly existence.  May he experience peace and joy.

It is only the giving that makes us what [who] we are. - Ian Anderson. Jethro Tull . . . Betsy

So it goes. (11.00 / 1)

He's probably been ready for a while.

God knows I am.

I've got a LOOOONG way to go. Yeeesh. Fuckin' prison sentence. No parole.

At least I ain't in solitary.

: )

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

Yeah, so it goes (9.00 / 1)
I think I was a college freshman when I discovered Vonnegut. He made me a lit major. It lasted through everything he'd written up to then. And then I realized there was no future in a lit degree, so back to the business school I went. But his storytelling touched me. He was a treasure.

So it goes, indeed.

Damn. (10.00 / 1)
"We have this new club up here in Heaven." ~ Wanda June to Major Siegfried von Konigswald, Happy Birthday, Wanda June

True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country. ~Kurt Vonnegut

Well this just sucks (0.00 / 0)
I guess I'll have to light a candle at the Church of God of the Utterly Indifferent.

I read Player Piano for a satire class I took at Bama.  i don't remember the details, but I recall getting into a heated argument with the professor over the book.  I'll have to dig it out and read it again.

Shit.

"Reading made Don Quixote a gentleman. Believing what he had read made him mad." --George Bernard Shaw

Why is everybody so sad? (10.80 / 5)
Vonnegut got 84 years on this planet.  He got to do what he came here to do: write some very fine novels that survive him.

Vonnegut, as a POW during World War Two, survived the firebombing of Dresden by the Allies.  Perhaps this was a sign that Fate had stayed Death's hand because Vonnegut was marked for greater things...or perhaps it's just one of those random things that happen in our crazy pinball universe.

Vonnegut put a piece of his soul into every book he wrote.  Kurt Vonnegut, or at least his essence, isn't dead:  he's out there, on the shelves of a million libraries, waiting to awaken minds.  We can visit with Kurt Vonnegut whenever we wanted.  He has been my companion on a hundred journeys and my solace through a thousand sleepless nights.  He has been the first person to speak to me in the morning and many times, the only person to speak to me who made any sense.

Kurt Vonnegut's not dead.  If Vonnegut is dead, then Shakespeare is dead, Milton is dead, Hemingway is dead, Dickinson is dead.

Writers make a desperate bid for immortality by carving off a piece of their souls and using it to breathe life into the worlds they create.  It's not easy to do that. In fact, it's gut-wrenching.  Why do you think it's so damned hard to write a really great book?  If it was easy, anybody could do it.  Most writers fail, and are forgotten, if they are ever known at all.

Kurt Vonnegut is not dead.  Cats Cradle, The Sirens of Titan, Breakfast of Champions, Slaughterhouse Five, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, are the dice Kurt tossed in his gamble to win a place among the Immortals.  We won't know if his gamble paid off, because all of us will be dust by the time final judment is passed.

I'm not sad.  I haven't lost Kurt Vonnegut.  I have him right here, in my study, and that's where he's going to stay.  If his words continue to speak to us, to our children, and to our children's children, then he will live on, through his words, through the books that he was perhaps meant to write, through the words that he did write.

There are parents at my school who want to take Slaughterhouse Five off the library shelves and out of the classroom.  They don't want Kurt to talk to the children, to teach them what he learned in his time on this planet.  They won't win, of course;Slaughterhouse Five will keep its place.  Vonnegut's defenders are many and they are more determined than the dream censors. If Vonnegut dies, it will be from neglect, not from malice.

Kurt Vonnegut is dead.  Long live Kurt Vonnegut.

The two prime movers in the Universe are Time and Luck.
--Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Once again, I'm at the mercy of someone I wouldn't let pick my nose!--John Lithgow, "Third Rock from the Sun"

I'm not sad. (6.00 / 1)

Did I say I was sad?

Did I even say "Bummer?"

Just -- "Whoa. There goes another one."

I'm happy for him.

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

Well, death is a relief from suffering (0.00 / 0)
For the person who dies.  But I've observed that the suffering of a person who dies does not end with that person's death, except for him--the suffering is just shifted onto someone else.

Life is too brief to consider giving it up so long as I have my sense of humour (mordant as it is).  Life is rather like driving on a deserted country road at night; not much to look at, but who knows what will be caught in the headlights around the next bend.

Once again, I'm at the mercy of someone I wouldn't let pick my nose!--John Lithgow, "Third Rock from the Sun"

[ Parent ]
Vonnegut wrote his own epitaph (11.00 / 2)
In his book, "A Man Without A Country", Vonnegut--finally stripped of all laughter, of all illusions, ground down by life, wrote these words:

I really don't know what I'm going to become from now on. I'm simply along for the ride to see what happens to this body and this brain of mine. I'm startled that I became a writer. I don't think I can control my life or my writing. Every other writer I know feels he is steering himself, and I don't have that feeling. I don't have that sort of control. I'm simply becoming. All I really wanted to do was give people the relief of laughing. Humor can be a relief, like an aspirin tablet. If a hundred years from now people are still laughing, I'd certainly be pleased. I apologize to all of you who are the same age as my grandchildren. And many of you reading this are probably the same age as my grandchildren. They, like you, are being royally shafted and lied to by our Baby Boomer corporations and government. Yes, this planet is in a terrible mess. But it has always been a mess. There have never been any "Good Old Days," there have just been days. And as I say to my grandchildren, "Don't look at me. I just got here."

Kurt Vonnegut's friend Saul Steinberg, whom Vonnegut called "the wisest man I ever met", said this about Vonnegut:

"It's very simple. There are two sorts of artists, one not being in the least superior to the other. But one responds to the history of his or her art so far, and the other responds to life itself."

Once again, I'm at the mercy of someone I wouldn't let pick my nose!--John Lithgow, "Third Rock from the Sun"

Gore Vidal had some lovely words for Vonnegut (9.00 / 1)
"He was sort of like nobody else," said Gore Vidal, who noted that he, Vonnegut and Norman Mailer were among the last writers around who served in World War II.

"He was imaginative; our generation of writers didn't go in for imagination very much. Literary realism was the general style. Those of us who came out of the war in the 1940s made it sort of the official American prose, and it was often a bit on the dull side. Kurt was never dull."

And Vonnegut, a survivor of a serious suicide attempt in 1984 (and who also beat lung cancer, despite a lifelong smoking habit), was proud that he stuck out life to the bitter end:

Vonnegut once said that of all the ways to die, he'd prefer to go out in an airplane crash on the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. He often joked about the difficulties of old age.

"When Hemingway killed himself he put a period at the end of his life; old age is more like a semicolon," Vonnegut told The Associated Press in 2005.

"My father, like Hemingway, was a gun nut and was very unhappy late in life. But he was proud of not committing suicide. And I'll do the same, so as not to set a bad example for my children."

Dang... (0.00 / 0)
Another chapter of my youth closes.

"I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance." William Faulkner

He's Probably Laughing... (0.00 / 0)
....his ass off at the irony of dying of head injuries. It was assumed that the reason Billy Pilgrim could time travel was his head injuries sustained in a plane crash.

And now Vonnegut is the ultimate time traveller...

I just realised something (0.00 / 0)
Woody Allen is going to die.

Bob Dylan is going to die.

Everybody's going to get old and die.

Except me, of course*.

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work... I want to achieve it through not dying.

*I will miss you all very much and think you of often, I promise.
