Rush Limbaugh and the Magic of Barack Obama

by: francislholland

(Interesting food for thought. And I do agree with skippy that we should call Rush's advertisers. - promoted by Renee in Ohio)

"Magic Negro?"  What other kind of "Negro" could become the first Black president of the United States?

Cross-posted at the Eddie G. Griffin (BASG) blog and the Francis L. Holland Blog.

I'm not in the United States, so I don't have the "pleasure" of watching Rush Limbaugh on television.  But, Eddie G. Griffin (BASG) tells me that Rush Limbaugh is calling Barack Obama the "Magic Negro," and Exodus Mentality and Afro-Netizen confirm this.  I've seen the video.  I'm glad Imus got canned and I hope Limbaugh gets canned too, but I'm not really offended by this.

I know this "Magic Negro" thing is driving a lot of us crazy, but I like the term "Magic Negro."  Let's face it!  What other kind of Negro could hope to become the first Black president of the United States?

francislholland :: Rush Limbaugh and the Magic of Barack Obama

Surely, Rush Limbaugh is trying to remind America that Obama is Black, certain in the conviction that this fact alone will be enough to turn the white electorate against him.  But, I think most Americans already know that Obama is Black and many are supporting him anyway, precisely because of Obama's  special way of being Black, even a unique way of being human.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Black Commentator

After ignoring Black politicians for centuries, the Rush Limbaughs of the world now feel compelled by circumstances to run a video that features not one but TWO Black politicians, with an additional cameo by Jesse Jackson.  In this case, I think this is a sign of progress.

Says Afro-Netizen,

The Magic Negro is a figure of postmodern folk culture, coined by snarky 20th century sociologists, to explain a cultural figure who emerged in the wake of Brown vs. Board of Education. "He has no past, he simply appears one day to help the white protagonist," reads the description on Wikipedia.

He's there to assuage white "guilt" (i.e., the minimal discomfort they feel) over the role of slavery and racial segregation in American history, while replacing stereotypes of a dangerous, highly sexualized black man with a benign figure for whom interracial sexual congress holds no interest.

As might be expected, this figure is chiefly cinematic - embodied by such noted performers as Sidney Poitier, Morgan Freeman, Scatman Crothers, Michael Clarke Duncan, Will Smith and, most recently, Don Cheadle. And that's not to mention a certain basketball player whose very nickname is "Magic." Afro-Netizen

Although all English words can have an entirely different meaning when applied to Black people, "magic" is normally a synonym for "extraordinary," only better.  And Barack Obama IS extraordinary, having graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, as the editor of the Harvard Law Review.  Regardless of demographic group, there aren't more than fifty people alive in the United States right now who have achieved that distinction.  So, I know Rush means this as an insult, but I see it as a compliment and a recommendation that might actually do some good.

Perhaps, Rush Limbaugh says "Magic Negro" with a tinge of envious resentment, but the fact is that Obama IS magical to a lot of people, apparently regardless of color, or precisely because of his special achievements in spite of his color, like Tiger Woods.  For most golfers - white and Black alike - it would certainly seem like "magic" if they could have just one day on the links as good as Tiger's last five years.

Now, who is being ridiculed in this video?  The video acknowledges the tremendous affection white people have for Barack Obama and the video may even accurately point out one of the reasons why:  Even while acknowledging American realities, Barack doesn't arouse white people's guilt over all the wrongs they've done.

The video mostly ridicules the Reverend Al Sharpton, but the questions raised are legitimately ones that a lot of Black people and white people are sorting through right now.

Ultimately, I think this video may help Barack with white people, because it underscores the perception that Barack is not "too Black" (like Al Sharpton) to be accepted by hyper-scared whites.  (Criticisms of Barack for not being Black enough actually help him to pick up three votes among whites for every vote that he might lose among Blacks based on this perception.)

But, I think the "not Black enough" meme is not sticking because of Barack's civil rights work in Illinois, his work with the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights, and his work to require videotaping of confessions in capital cases, and stop "racial" profiling, are all things that Black people think are very important.

It is not inconceivable that Obama could have the same magic in American politics that Tiger Woods has had on the golf court and that "Magic Johnson" had in basketball.  But golf is an objective sport, where everyone must meet the same standards regardless of color, while politics is one in which a candidate's achievement depend on the subjective assessments of donors, voters and the media.  Blacks, once permitted to compete, tend to do better in areas fields like sports, where our achievements are measured in objective ways, like the length of our drives and the accuracy of our putts.  It is much harder for us when our achievement is measured by our subjective ability to convince whites to like and have faith in us.

So far, though, Barack Obama seems to being doing quite well with those three groups who must have a positive subjective assessment of him - donors, voters and the media - if he is to have success on the national scene.  Objective measures like polls, contributions and media attention tell us that Barack is doing well with white America subjectively.

The "Magic Negro" monicker may even help us to understand how whites are appreciating psychologically the prospect of living in a nation nominally led by a Black man.  Using Hollywood films as a prism through which to understand the white psyche as related to Blacks, the Black Commentator says,

"Historically, if a black person is thrust into a white universe, it is inevitable that the white people will become a better person," says Thomas Cripps, author of "Making Movies Black: The Hollywood Message Movie from World War II to the Civil Rights Era" and other books on African American cinema. "Sidney Poitier spent his whole career in this position. Sidney actually carried the cross for Jesus in 'The Greatest Story Ever Told.'"

In 1943 alone, black men became the moral conscience of white characters in four World War II movies: "Sahara, " "Bataan," "Crash Dive" and "Life Boat." Black Commentator

If some whites want to elect Obama to be their conscience, like Martin Luther King, Jr., I see that as a positive thing.  So, I say, "Go ahead and call Barack Obama the 'Magic Negro.' "  If he turns out to have half the magic in the voting booths that Tiger Woods has on the golf course, than there may be no other word except "magic" that can describe Barack Obama's future accomplishments.

And I can even feel a little bit of pity and compassion for Rush Limbaugh, because I think I understand his plight.  It must be really humbling to be Rush Limbaugh and to know that you could never achieve what Barack Obama has academically and politically - not even on your best day, not even as white man.

VERY perceptive, Francis. (11.00 / 1)
And you know what?

I think that Mr. Obama is FULLY conscious of this position that he is filling in the American mythos, and he is running it in a truly masterful manner.

So far.

Here is the danger, as far as he is concerned.

The Magic Negro is not allowed much leeway for failure. Even less than the Magic Mommy, which is the slot that Ms. Clinton is trying to fill.

To some degree, you can equate Tiger Woods and Barack Obama with Martha Stewart and Hillary Clinton in these matters. BOTH duos are members of long-suffering minorities. Now Martha Stewart was convicted of financial malfeasance and, I believe, some form or whiff of perjury.  I did not follow the mock trial...she was already cooked by the time the mainstream media got thorugh with her. Them Magic Mommies are not allowed much leeway. But they ARE afforded a certain forgiveness. I notice that very shortly after "paying her debt to society" she is once again occcupying much the same role in the ongoing American MSM passion play. In the news, running her hustle for CostCo or whatever.

Now contrast Tiger Woods. Every time he has a little downward slip...I mean, he IS only human, folks...there's the sports media, openly rooting for whichever current up-and-comer is on his ass. Try to imagine what would happen if Mr. Woods spent some Fed prison time for financial fraud and then tried to make a comeback. The MSM would diss him for YEARS.

Well...as above, so below.

And vice-versa.

Just as Tiger and Obama relate, so do Martha and Hillary. Even physically. Roughly the same ages at least as far as visuals are concerned. Same generations. Same general builds, same general haircuts, same general tastes in clothes.

Analogues.

The Magic Mommy and the Magic Negro. First in pop culture (The trial balloon as it were, although I do not impute much conscious effort or planning in this. It's just what happens. It's simply what's for dinner.), and then in political culture.

Mr. Obama had best walk a thin straight line. If he slips, they will take him down. And they will not let him up easy, either.

Watch.

The "ARRRRGH!!!"meisters are poised, ready to pounce at the slightest misstep.

Watch.

Magic Negro (0.00 / 0)
The term "Magic Negro" was not coined by Mr. Limbaugh. Rush first used the term after reading a column in the LA Times, http://www.latimes.c... , written by a black author. After Limbaugh read and then discussed the article, a parody song was then made by Paul Shanklin, and played on Rush's radio program. These are some facts you don't seem to be aware of.

Obama (4.00 / 1)
Francis Holland: "And Barack Obama IS extraordinary, having graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, as the editor of the Harvard Law Review.  Regardless of demographic group, there aren't more than fifty people alive in the United States right now who have achieved that distinction."

I think it means he was a good student in school. Doing well in school means a person has learned how to learn what they are being taught. That they worked hard. It usually necessitates  that they have a capacity at least for good memory and focus. It's not an definitive indication of intelligence and it's not an indication of being able to "think". Students in school merely need to repeat what they are told on tests. Thinking has never been understood, much less taught in school. Thinking is partly an emotional experience and it actually requires moments of no thought but of pure sensation.

Intelligence is doing things that are beneficial to your welfare and that usually means the welfare of at least some others around you. Formal Education is not a requirement for intelligence. Formal education can actually make the person who has been "educated" unable to develop their natural intelligence.

The thing I can't stand about Barack Obama is that he is open to bombing Iran and open to the use of Nuclear Weapons against Iran for some imagined reason...perhaps to get elected....but it doesn't matter.

America is a terrorist nation. It's a terrorist nation that's killing muslims all over the world. Anybody who for any reason endorses that for political or personal reasons, I detest at this time. This is way, way, way way out of control.

Stu Piddy....a free range human

Obama 2 (6.00 / 1)
I should say that the whole idea of white people accepting Barack Obama because he is seen as "different" from "other" black people seems very true.

I think he has a better chance because of that. Many white people who don't "like" (conciously or somewhat unconciously) black people may very well see Obama as "different" from 'them". Not because he's like white people, but because he's not like whatever stereotype someone may have about black people. I guess that makes him "magical".

is he actually bothered to speak uncomfortable truths about this country, as did MLK, jr. or jesse jackson in '84, for that matter.

as it stands, he is less than impressive, along with the rest of the front runners.

MLK wasn't running for president and Jesse wasn't elected. (9.33 / 3)
I certainly understand your desire for Barack Obama to say the things that we know to be true.  I used to watch the news and read the papers waiting for Democrats to say what I believed.  But you know what?  I've realized that most people in the United States are very different from me, and if my presidential candidate says what I would say then someone else's presidential candidate is going to hold the Oval Office.

Now I realize that I have to RESEARCH the voting records of the candidates to find out who BELIEVES what I believe and then hope to hell s/he doesn't say what I believe so that s/he will have some chance of actually winning the election.

Yes, this puts a greater burden on me to turn of the television and look at what's in the books that candidates have written and try to interpret their commitments from the way they have actually spent their time over the last few decades.  But, in the end I believe this is a much more reliable way to find out what a candidate believes than is listening to their poll-tested formulations on the 2008 campaign trail.

But, that's why employers ask you for a resume when you're out looking for a job.  For some reason, they believe that how you spent your law school internships and your last twenty years is a more accurate reflection of who you are than what you say in a fifteen minute interview when your hopes for a new job depend on it.

Most creditors also believe that whether you have paid your bills over the last decade is a more accurate reflection of your creditworthiness than what you say to the salesman when you're trying to buy a new Jaguar.  It's more work to look at what people have actually done and been, but it's far more objective and reliable.

i have given the democrats the benefit of the doubt for years (0.00 / 0)
it has not panned out when the chips were down. obama has not stood up when it mattered, when he had the power and soapbox to do something, even symbolically, about the enormous problems we face. i have no faith that he will suddenly do the right thing later on down the road, if he is so loath to say anything out of the utterly bankrupt DC political status quo on the campaign trail.

i am unimpressed. not jst with obama, but he is the topic of conversation here. his fantastic resume means nothing if he does not put it to work.

white america does not need to be told that everything is OK.

If you studied what Obama did in the Illinois Legislature (0.00 / 0)
When you say a person hasn't "stood up when it mattered," what do you mean, exactly?  For the last two years, Obama has been the only Black man in a US Senate controlled by white men.  Do you honestly believe that anything Obama said could have changed the course of what the white male dominated Senate did?  Of course not.  The only thing that tilting at windmills would have accomplished is to exclude him from the presidential race as a Black "radical."

So, now that we've concluded that the last two years didn't matter, because there was nothing Barack Obama (or all Congressional Democrats put together) could do, then what, precisely is the point at which Barack should have stood up but didn't?

Before Barack was in the Senate, he came out against the war in Iraq.  He was ignored, but he spoke his mind.  Clearly that didn't matter either, because the war started anyway and an embarrassing number of people were behind it.

I conclude that what matters about Barack is his leadership in the Illinois legislature where he worked against capital punishment and "racial" profiling.  He stood up when it mattered because he stood up when what he did could have an effect.

If you disagree with me, then give me one example of what Barack Obama, the lone Black man in the US Senate, could have done over the past two years that would have changed the course of events.  If what you suggest would not have changed the course of events then, by definition, it didn't "matter."

Obama walking on thin ice... (0.00 / 0)
Obama is a great politician who truly represents the new generation of Blacks and the young Americans.  Unfortunately, we have so many one-eyed Cyclops on the Hill and the Oval Office, and an evil axis that runs from Wall Street to Hollywood.  We have conservatives Christians who are willing to pay anything (even selling their wives) just to derail Obama before elections.
We innocently were misled into selecting the wrong people for the wrong job. Our Government's mess in Iraq and Afghanistan, headed by our Dictator in Chief will do down in history along Vietnam and Bosnia blasphemies.  Mr. Obama could one day end up in the Hall of Shame (God forbid).  Well, let's see: he doesn't know much about Iraq. He has never lived there. He doesn't speak Arabic. He knows nothing about Islam, Arabism, the culture and the chemistry of devout Moslem.  Oh please don't call devout Moslem extremists.  It sounds like the n-word.  Goddamn it, have respect for their devotion.
Bush and Cheney are is the most dangerous rapists in the world. They molested Iraq, Afghanistan and dozen of other countries for the wrong reason. But, most importantly, they molested us and destroyed our dignity in front of the world.
I wish Mr. Obama the best of luck.  I just want him to shine throughout his tenure as president for the whole 8 years, and not just few months.
