Time to Stop Funding -- The Dems

by: Steven D

Tue May 29, 2007 at 06:33:50 AM PDT

(Damn straight! - promoted by Renee in Ohio)

Ah yes, the fabled liberal netroots. Whatever else "we" are, the most important thing we represent to the Democratic party is a constant source of "free" money in the form of contributions. Contributions to Presidential candidates, to various Senators and Representatives' Political Action Committees, to the DNC, the DCCC, the DSCC and to individual candidates. I should know. Half my spam these days comes from Democratic politicians requesting my credit card number, or my check, preferably in an amount larger than $100. True, it does get worse during an election year, but since 2008 is the "big one" with the Presidency up for grabs, the calls for cash have started earlier and earlier.

Now, why do I call it "free" money? It certainly isn't free to you or me. But it is "free" to those who receive our contributions because they come with "no strings attached." We aren't corporate lobbyists who can take possession of a Congress person's ear hole anytime they want. We aren't "fat cat" donors or Hollywood celebrities like Barbara Streisand, who can call up their favorite Senator (or two, or three) whenever they feel like it and demand that their voice be heard on whatever is their pet issue of the moment.

Steven D :: Time to Stop Funding -- The Dems

No, we are the free money people. Our emails receive automated replies, not personal ones. Our phone calls get stuck in easily deleted voice mail caches, or if we're lucky, half listened to by some young staffer who probably thinks what we have to say is a big fat waste of his or her time. And the reason is because we can't contribute enough money in our pay to play political system to earn us any real access.

Which is why, despite our millions of votes for Democrats last Fall, our activism on behalf of Democrats, and our millions of dollars of contributions, no one in the Democratic Party bothered to listen to us last week when the Democrats unilaterally surrendered to President Bush on the funding for the war in Iraq.

The single biggest reason Democrats won control of the House and Senate was their pledge to change the direction of the war in Iraq. Well, they didn't change it, Bush did with his "surge" plan which is now killing more American soldiers each month even as there is no let up (so far as we can tell from censored media reports) in the levels of death and destruction which the Iraqi people are continuing to endure.

The Democrats gleefully took our money. They gladly accepted our volunteer efforts. And they rejoiced in our votes which gave them control of both houses of Congress for the first time in over a decade. Then they slapped us in the face, told us to shut up, and tried to make lemonade out of the bags of stale urine they dumped on our heads after they voted to give Bush every damn thing he wanted without a single relevant concession on his part.

Okay, that's fine. Nobody said politics wasn't a dirty game. But no one said we have to keep paying for being mistreated and abused by the party that putatively represents our interests, either. So here's my recommendation to you:

STOP SENDING DEMS YOUR MONEY!

I mean it. Stop all contributions. And after you do, send them emails or call them on the phone and tell them you will no longer contribute to any Democrat or Democratic organization or political action committee, ad nauseam, until they stop funding the Iraq war. That's what I am going to do with respect to the Democratic National Committee, the only Democratic organization I contribute to on a regular (i.e., monthly basis). I send them a monthy amount via my credit card every month. But no more.

Look, I understand that Democrats can't get much of their agenda, if anything, passed so long as George Bush can veto their legislation. They can't pas universal health care, for example, or a bill to start limiting our use of fossil fuels by putting caps on carbon emissions. They don't have the votes to override a veto by Bush. So I won't hold them accountable for not passing much needed progressive legislation.

But funding the Iraq war doesn't require passing legislation. All it requires is NOT PASSING a BILL to FUND the WAR in IRAQ. Or keep sending the same bill back to Bush which mandates a withdrawal of US troops and make him blink first. But they couldn't do that, despite the fact that 70% of Americans disapprove of both Bush and his handling of the Iraq War.

So let them drink tea and eat cake without my hard earned dollars paying for their privileges. And without yours, and yours, and yours ... etc. Because maybe then they'll finally take us seriously and pay attention when we tell them to:

SUPPORT THE TROOPS -- BRING THEM HOME. NOW!
Period. End of discussion.

Also posted at Booman Tribune, where one commenter suggested that with my "following" I should lead a movemnt among the top tier blogs to defund the Democrats.  I think he or she vastly overrates my personal influence, nor do I consider any of the "top tier" bloggers like Kos, Atrios, etc. to abandon fund raising for the Democrats seeing as that's how they have gained their access to Dem leaders, such as it is.

But maybe if the good folks at MLW will help spread this idea of withholding or canceling contributions, we can have an impact.  I see the current democratic Party following down the same path that led the GOP to lose the last election.  Well, if they want to play games and ignore their most numerous and loyal supporters, fine, but they can do it without my money.

How 'bout we back a party (7.86 / 7)
or politician that is _not_ hopelessly corrupted by the money of corporations and the rich?

Just this once.

I'm important, and everyone else is too. - G.K. Chesterton

Would be nice. (10.50 / 2)
Just once in my lifetime.

[ Parent ]
given the cost of TV ad time (7.40 / 5)
and the cost of actually running aggressive GOTV and party organizing in a country of 300 million, that's going to be exceptionally difficult to do, unless you get a massive amount of repeated small money donations over the years, or else full public financing of elections.

corruption is a symptom of a bad system. any party trying to run nationwide will need lots of money to do so, and the greatest source of that money is the rich.

the sick irony of it all s that you need political power to change the rules of the game so that the game won't be dependent on the wealthy, but anyone elected in the old regime has a strong self-interest in preserving the shape of the game that they won, and fustrating any real reform.

great leap to office of President (8.00 / 1)
before doing the ground work of developing (and re-developing what has been broken) working-and-middle-class-level organized power... is very unllikely.

how about the b listers? (10.00 / 3)
one commenter suggested that with my "following" i should lead a movemnt among the top tier blogs to defund the democrats.  i think he or she vastly overrates my personal influence, nor do i consider any of the "top tier" bloggers like kos, atrios, etc. to abandon fund raising for the democrats seeing as that's how they have gained their access to dem leaders, such as it is.

how'z about the b list blogs?  skippy has already linked to and blogged about this piece of yours, steven.  if we can get all the b listers to get on board, it will not only send a message to the dems, but to the a listers as well.

jon stewart sez: "when i want news, i turn to cnn...and they turn...to skippy...the bush...kangaroo!"

Skippy (9.00 / 2)
You have my permission to run with this.  I'm a lousy organizer.  What I do well is write (well, some of the time).  But I will fully support any campaign you can think of to get any letter listers to cut off the funding.  I'll add my voice, my name, what have you.  But I can't organize my own house, much less a de-funding campaign.  We need better people than me to come up with the ins and outs of that.

But any way you want to use this little rant of mine, feel free.  I release any copyright I have to it if that's a concern to anyone.

[ Parent ]
Not One Damn Dime (9.67 / 12)
Not only do they not get a penny from me,  but I CONTINUALLY let them know WHY.

I'm not paying for the war machine.

and I'm not paying for the politicians.

Fuck em all.

Some of where my money goes to:
Amnesty International
Democracy Now!
Planned Parenthood
Oregon Food Bank
Mother Jones

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace." ~Jimi Hendrix

Hi Janet (7.00 / 3)
All good organizations to support.  My wife and I tend to spend my money on environmental organizations (including those working locally in my state), but we should give more to Amnesty International or Drs. without borders.

We also give to Planned Parenthood and NARAL and I think Emily's list, as well as the usual suspects at the United Way.  Local shelters for battered women are also important to us, as well as the local Ronald McDonald House for kids facing cancer, etc. and their families.  That's a good organization by the way despite the tie-in to the McDonald's name.  If you have one in your neck of the woods, look them up.  They may also accept certain items like used books, etc. (each house has its own rules on that) that cost you nothing, but can come in handy for the kids and their families, as well as being a good place to volunteer.

[ Parent ]
Universal healthcare (8.40 / 5)
I understand that Democrats can't get much of their agenda, if anything, passed so long as George Bush can veto their legislation. They can't pass universal health care, for example

They wouldn't want to.

Don't think the veto is an excuse.  It isn't an excuse until they have passed the bill and made Bush veto it.  A bill for universal healthcare would be very popular.  It would cost politicians a lot to vote against it.  That's why they'll never make one.  Because Bush couldn't be counted on to veto it.  It's got to be eliminated in a bipartisan way to avoid blame.

The two party system is there to give the illusion of fairness while effectively eliminating any choice.  Democrats didn't back down to Bush.  Democrats wanted the war as much as him and all this dancing around was just creating the illusion of a democratic system to either channel civil action into one of the useless but safe parties or to create a sense of despair and hence inaction (either reaction works fine for the elites).

If you want to know what to do in this situation just look at what circumstances prompted reform the last time ---- massive disaffection from both parties which threatened the status quo and threatened the creation of a popular party.

I truly believe (7.00 / 2)
That if we don't get universal health care, my life will be shortened.  We are at the verge/cusp of a great number of breakthroughs in medicine thanks to the Human genome project, stem cell research, nanotechnology, etc.  But if only the richest 1% can afford those treatments ....?

[ Parent ]
You'll get universal healthcare (8.00 / 2)
You'll get universal healthcare when it benefits the rich for you to have it.  There are a variety of ways that could happen.

[ Parent ]
You are right: the push for universal health care is coming from... (6.00 / 2)
...business, both big and small, because the current patchwork system of private insurance is hurting their profits.  The burden of providing their share of health care to their employees is eating away at PROFITS, and so we will get universal health care (of the crappiest, most basic, HMO kind) when it suits the ruling class.

[ Parent ]
yup (10.00 / 2)
ther california democrats play a similar game with schwarzeneggar and the 2/3 budget rule here as well. i suspect that is one reason why they were so hesitant to support angelides, because he would remove a major excuse for inaction, and force them to screw either their voters or their donors the next time decent bills came up.

surf putah, your friendly neighborhood central valley samizdat

[ Parent ]
my thoughts exactly--they wouldn't want to (nt) (10.00 / 1)
[ Parent ]
Universal healthcare (0.00 / 0)
This is actually a fairly good point. If anyone in Congress could put together a good plan that could pass, Bush would have no ideological reason not to sign it. Then he would get the credit. I am willing to give Mitt Romney the credit for what happened in Massachusetts because of how it was covered.

"You cannot take what you have not given, and you must give yourself. You cannot buy the Revolution. You cannot make the Revolution. You can only be the Revolution. It is in your spirit, or it is nowhere."--Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed

[ Parent ]
Steven D, you never cease to amaze me (10.50 / 6)
I hope you don't mind but I edited your essay and put a bulk of the post in the extended box, works better for the front page.

I wholeheartedly agree that there are only two things that matter to the Democratic Party when it comes to those who still believe they have not become an addendum to the Republican Party.  One is our money and the other is our vote.

Defunding them is brilliant but also not voting for them and sending in a copy of our absentee ballots with no check mark for any D on the ballot.

I strongly believe that women can unite in light of the recent SCOTUS decision against us, a ban upheld with nary a word from any Democrat in leadership positions, oh yeah, except the Pelosi bit, "I'm very disappointed."

Well so are the women madam speaker, disappointed to have their lives in jeopardy, disappointed that there is no health exception for the woman, disappointed that their very lives were lost and all the while the word that is just a word was never mentioned.  But that was your last most excellent essay.

Men and women alike have plenty of reasons to cease funding and voting for the Democrats.  I've said so before and was thought to be giving up, that is simply not true, by telling this party that we no longer support them and are looking for a viable alternative we take the first step towards a better life for our children and their children in so many ways and on so many levels.

The Democratic Party will clearly not do a thing to ensure a brighter future for anyone, not in this country and not in the world at large.  They can't stand up to Bush, they are not willing to protect and support us, they only care about the next election cycle and the arrogant ignorance they hold, that they will be elected again even though they have shamed us, ridiculed us, and hung us out to dry.

It's our responsibility to start today in creating something of worth, a political movement and party that sees a different future than the one presented to us currently, we owe it to the generations that follow us.

I say we defund them and then on election day we go to the polls in mass with signs held high why we are not voting for any candidate with a capitol D.

Great essay, great idea, brilliant mind and heart have you Steven D.

I will not die an unlived life. Fuck em, I will not live in fear, I will live out loud and on the record.

Hi Renee!

Much obliged and very grateful.

I never funded the Democratic Party (8.43 / 7)
I never gave money to an umbrella organization like the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee nor its counterpart for the House, because I didn't want the money to be distributed at the whim of the party bosses like Rahm Emmanuel (whose dumbass strategies reduced the number of progressives who could've won election).

I've always given money to individual candidates, and I will continue to do so.  The fact that these candidates have a "D" next to their name on the ballot is irrelevant to me; they could have an "I" or a gold star and it doesn't matter.  What matters is that I back people who have integrity and who, if they don't always vote the way I like, will at least have principled reasons for NOT doing exactly what I wish 100% of the time.

However, there ARE "deal-breaker" votes, certain ones on which I insist the candidates vote as I want...or no more money or time for them.

That said, I agree that we can't give money blindly.  I helped fund (and volunteered for) the candidacy of freshman Congressman Jerry McNerney, who unseated the odious Richard Pombo in the district where I reside.  I've actually met with Jerry several times, and while he's busy when he's in Washington, he does have public meetings with constituents whether or not they voted for him or gave him money when he comes home.  The same goes for my representatives in the California state legislature (both the House and the Senate).

I'm not so egotistical as to believe that giving $500 or $1000 to a candidate gives me the right to pick up a phone and have them listen to me.  In fact, I'd prefer it if my representative DIDN'T give me special consideration just because I donated money or my time--that's just a low-rent version of the "pay for play" politics I despise.

What I can and will support is people saying that they will donate time and money to candidates, not parties.  And really, that's what we should have been doing all along.

Comment cross-posted at Booman Tribune

I will continue to contribute to supporting the 50-state strategy, but will give nothing to the DCCC and DSCC.

The 50-state strategy has the promise of loosening the Republican grip on a number of states, which will give some of the more cowardly Democrats (Bob Etheridge and Mike McIntyre, for example) greater confidence.

Unless you are going to go full bore creating a third-party infrastructure from scratch, completely defunding Democrats is shooting yourself in the foot.

Rahm Emanuel, Charles Schumer, Harry Reid, Steny Hoyer, and Nancy Pelosi must get the message.

Howard Dean continues to need our support.

The 50-state strategy has the promise of loosening the Republican grip on a number of states, which will give some of the more cowardly Democrats (Bob Etheridge and Mike McIntyre, for example) greater confidence.

Um...they're in Congress and have power and influence, and I'm supposed to boost THEIR confidence?

Why don't we just all write letters to them and tell them that they are handsome, virile, and smarter than average?  That ought to boost up their egos enough so that they can, you know, do their fucking jobs and represent the interests of the people who elected them.

Sorry, Tarheel...not yelling at you.  I know you're just trying to help, and you've made a lot of sense in other comments, but the "50 State strategy" is a loser.

Fifty-state strategy (10.00 / 1)
Any political party is going to need infrastructure and relationships in 50 states in order to win power in Congress.  So a fifty-state strategy is a bottom line for every party.  Only, at the moment only the Republicans have a fifty-state infrastructure, which they have built since 1964.  What an effective permanent 50-state infrastructure does is lower the cost of reaching voters and forces the opposition without an infrastructure to try to use the media to overcome this advantage.  Any third party would have to build such an infrastructure in order to be effective; indeed, it is the failure of the Green Party and Libertarian Party to successfully do this that keeps American politics stuck with two parties.

You have to understand who Bob Etheridge and Mike McIntyre are and where their districts are to fully understand my comment.  Between them, they represent the people who are at Fort Bragg, one of the largest military installations in the South.  A large segment of their constituency is either current military, military families, or retire military.  And they have voted nationally for Reagan and George W. Bush, but locally for these two Democrats.  And on other issues by national security, these guys are true Democrats--for choice, equal opportunity, better health care, better public education, environmental sanity, and so on.  Strangely, so are a lot of their constituents.  So they are representing the interests of the people who elected them, as those local people communicate their interests and issues to them.  The whole country has not flipped a switch and suddenly become anti-war, it has been and remains a gradually occurring realization.

Without a coordinated infrastructure and state strategy, individual politicians are afraid to go out on limbs because they fear that no one has their back.  It's easy for a California Democrat to vote against additional funding of Bush's war without restrictions.  It's much more difficult for a Southern Democrat to do that, especially in Republican strongholds like Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas.  Indeed, the only Southern Democrats who opposed the House bill were from minority-majority districts.  The main exceptions were G. K. Butterfield and James Clyburn (the Democratic majority whip - which tells where the leadership really is).

A local infrastructure makes it much easier for primary battles to result in general election victories, as long as there are no sore losers.  It provides a framework for debate within the party.

How that would give Etheridge and McIntyre confidence is that they would know that there was a real possibility that a more liberal or anti-war candidate would have the resources to successfully win the general election should they win the primary.  And they would have candidates that they could run to the right of in their districts, moving their positions less to the right or actually resulting in their replacement by someone who actually is anti-war, based on local debate.  That local debate is not happening because there is no framework for it.  And the current district committees are not sufficiently developed to handle it.

It's not his psychological confidence that needs boosting, it's his political confidence.  And BTW, neither of these two guys are noted for overinflated egos.

Their power and influence, like in other places is limited by their ability to get re-elected.

A second benefit of a fifty-state strategy is that it does not give any location a free pass to the Republicans.  And when there is opposition, there is conversation and the possibility of changing people's minds.  Many of the Republican nitwits in Congress are there because people voted for them without ever hearing them speak except to say, "I'm Deward Farquhar, and I am responsible for this ad."

Still smarting after sending money to 'Frenchy' Kerry in 2004 only to watch him roll over before all the votes in Ohio were counted with money STILL in the bank I allowed someone from the Obama campaign to talk me into donating 25 bucks about two weeks ago.

Good thing for me that I hadn't made out the check before the betrayal on the war funding.

I will send it to Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich now instead.

The DLC needs to be totally eradicated, they are nothing but the Praetorian guard for the oligarchy and the one party war state.

Time to get past this deceit and get the Democrats back to focusing on organized labor and the bolstering of the working class.

Forget the Feds, Lift the Locals ? (9.00 / 1)
I've been thinking this for about a week -

out here in happy happy seattle there are people in the dem party who are good and who are worth our time and our money

in MY opinion. AND

patty murray and cantwell are pretty close to worthless - not completely worthless, AND, not fascists, but too close to worthless to warrant any time, money, breath, effort, neurons ... fucking keystrokes ;)

Hence:

Forget The Feds, Lift the Locals

put on your tinfoil hats:

I got into all kinds of crap for saying to hell with crapwell over a year ago - ya know, I, me, was gonna elect a fascist cuz I wouldn't ... do ANYTHING !! HA HA HA , for crapwell.

once again, Washington had this big ass coordinated campaign to hoover up all the volunteers and all the money and all the volunteers to go forth and hoover money,

cuz, as the smart big people tell us peeee-ons, if we got people out for cantsellusoutenough, then down ticket people would benefit.

being a contrarian ... and sick of 3 decades of losing adn listenign to the same bullshit for those 3 decades ... I encouraged people to go work on state senator or other campaigns (even ... darcy burner for WA - 08)

BUT, BUT, BUT

here is where the tinfoil comes in:

what a great strategy for the dem fucking-loser class of 'leaders' - starve the locals to save the big guys at federal level,

cuz kerry is electable and is gonna help down ticket ...

ooops, shit, did I say gore ... ooopps...

this last week really made me feel good about NOT helping the goddam feds in the fall... well, except the 10 bucks apiece I obviously wasted on tester and webb, cuz

we need a Democratic congress otherwise ...

fuck it, I'm going to watch american idol.

Grassroots Organizing By The Community, For The Community, NOT for the "Leaders" http://www.liemail.com/BambooGrassroots.html

i have only ever given money to primary challenges (8.60 / 5)
in hopes of pushing the party left. several of those candidates have since sold out on what they ran on, which has given me some pause, but that's a risk inherent in giving money to a class of people - politicians - renowned for their duplicity and corruption.

these days, i don't have much of a surplus anyways, so it's a moot question. but when i find a bit extra, i will continue being picky about who gets it. certainly the party has no claim on my money, given the execrable manner in which they have rolled over and peed themselves when confronted by bush.

I'm no longer funding my own disenfranchisement (9.00 / 4)
If Da machine wants to pursue policies that appeal to (wink wink) "NASCAR" dads, they can get their money there too.

But Chickenshit Dems want to pretend they're holier than evil liberal moi on social issues,

More "securely" pro war than wussy anti-war me,

More conservatively croneytastic for greasing inappropriate right wing Rethug nominees into key govt positions than "ideologically pure" fastidious me --

All while denouncing Liberals as eeeeeeeeevvvvvvil eeEEEEEEEEEEvvvvilll, I tell ya.

A nice burlesque that I'm expected to fund with my piggybank whenever the Dem braintrust runs low and empower with the phonebank every election season.

I'm down with the others upstream who have exactly the right idea about funding individual candidates but starving Da Machine.

Instead of handing it over up front, I will reward good behavior in future, meaning I have to see some beforehand. If I see some fight from the Dems that doesn't rely on bloggers doing their dirty work, the braintrust will see some jack.

Groups that promote human rights and civil rights, ecology, labor and constitutional protections already have my emails saying my support is contingent on holding Da Machine's chestnuts over the fire.

I wouldn't count on support otherwise, including for a do-nothing, DINO presidential candidate that requires me to hold my nose for the next 18 mos.

After the vote, I vowed no more cash to them.  I received my latest "rah rah rah" from the D-freaking-N C today.  I'm sorry, Howard who? I only give to organizations I know, and I don't really recognize these people.  And I agree, Steven, the mass reply letters aren't enough for me to keep budgeting them in, especially with gas going back out of sight again.

On the positive side, I recycle, so at least a tree will be saved.  Well, a branch at least.

how about going even further? (10.50 / 4)
how about finding out how to start a recall campaign of any dems who voted for the bill?

jon stewart sez: "when i want news, i turn to cnn...and they turn...to skippy...the bush...kangaroo!"

I got a "leadership survey" from the Dems (7.00 / 2)
and sent it right back to them with that note.

I will continue to contribute to those few Democratic candidates who take a firm stand against the war, but no blank checks to the party.  Not a cent.

After they get elected (9.00 / 3)
they are captive to lobbyists who fill their coffers for their next reelection bid. After the initial boost into office they truly do not need us and do not work for us. If there is an attachment to us, its mainly sentimental, not practical.

But tell me, is it corruption if you work for the one who pays you? They are paid by cooporate lobbyists, not us once elected.

Glad to see this already said (0.00 / 0)
YES, local parties are important.
YES, primary challengers are important.
YES, the netroots should be very skeptical about giving to the big party organizations and have probably already learned this. Skippy may not want to link to plf515's series, "Rock the Houses!", because it was at the orange place, but it was well done and plf515 is one of the few people I would consider my friend without question on The Net. Some of our freshmen including Heath Shuler and Baron Hill voted for the supplemental, and the way they ran you would expect nothing less from them. The big committees are concerned with the letter after one's name and are there to moderate influences of ideology. This is true even with the RSC, which had to support Chafee only because of a letter.
Now the defeatist part:
Individual Democrats (cough--HRC--cough--gives MLW cold)did vote against this bill because they feared the netroots. They should not be punished with everybody else because of this bill. Nor should real activists against the war for whom grass-roots money could make a difference in whether they run for Congress at all be punished for running as Ds.
Often, when I visit MLW, I find good questions. The netroots is so diffuse that without looking at organizations like ActBlue, I am not sure if we know how much money came from them. Bowers has probably addressed this question. However, "the part of the base against the war" is a good enough category to explain a large drop in revenue for a party committee.
What if Armando was right, and the whole budget, or something like Reid-Feingold, is where you make a stand? In this case, Congress's power to fund the war should overrule the shrieks of "Congress shouldn't micromanage the war". And a yearly budget is not a (however fake) emergency situation such as the supplemental. I am going to write a nasty letter to Claire to this effect saying that the benchmarks are in the bill that passed. (Would have gone to office. Hubby had flu all week.) Congress has every right to use them in the next bill that comes before them to say that the Iraqi government is not worthy of our support, even if Bush can waive them in the next three months. Although the majority of MLWers may not believe there is a GWOT, there is a difference between that and propping up a government that can do nothing for its people and has shown no progress towards doing anything for its people. My husband has taken to saying that Saddam Hussein could keep order. We are not talking about perfect order. We are talking about decent lives for the majority of the people living in Iraq, and not being worse than Lebanon.
I came by to see if MSOC had written anything about Steve Gilliard.

"You cannot take what you have not given, and you must give yourself. You cannot buy the Revolution. You cannot make the Revolution. You can only be the Revolution. It is in your spirit, or it is nowhere."--Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed

Armando has new post (0.00 / 0)
here.
Frank Rich mentioned him today.

I will now exercise my poor reading skills, bring down the wrath of Armando, and point out that "immediate withdrawal" and "immediately doing something about the war" are not the same thing. Even the bill which everyone is angry about did not call for an immediate withdrawal.

"You cannot take what you have not given, and you must give yourself. You cannot buy the Revolution. You cannot make the Revolution. You can only be the Revolution. It is in your spirit, or it is nowhere."--Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed

[ Parent ]
This is true (0.00 / 0)
The bill, which did not pass so that Bush could veto it, called for a NON-BINDING RESOLUTION that set a timetable for withdrawal.

The withdrawal would have taken place over a period of many months; an "immediate withdrawal" is a poor choice of words, since I don't think it's physically possible for US troops to skedaddle out of Iraq without some major logistical planning and support.  You can't just move 150,000 troops and their equipment overnight, even if the President and the Congress ordered it.

Calls for an "immediate withdrawal" should actually be called "setting a definite timetable for withdrawal".
