In Memoriam: Donovan Barks

by: Maryscott O'Connor

Thu Feb 14, 2008 at 08:17:17 AM PST

Also known as BeagleandTabby here at MLW

The father of our one-time friend and blogging colleague, Donovan Barks, informed me last night that his son jumped to his death from the Golden Gate Bridge yesterday at approximately 3pm yesterday:

I'm sorry to tell you that Donovan is no longer with us. He jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge at 3pm today. He is at peace. For that I am thankful.

Donovan suffered from a crippling mental illness for most of his life; despite his struggles, he was known to many -- including me -- as a good friend and comrade-in-arms.

Maryscott O'Connor :: In Memoriam: Donovan Barks

Despite the many efforts made by his family and friends to help him, Donovan attempted suicide at least three times last year alone; including one effort preceded by his posting on MLW's Front Page a premature note informing us of it, which led to my subsequent actions (criticised by many elsewhere but thankfully supported here at MLW) leading to his hospitalisation. Unfortunately, the standard of care in this country for the mentally ill provides very little in the way of saving those who, like Donovan, are functional enough to refuse care but not enough to live happily without it.

I mention that last part only because the entire ordeal was well-chronicled on this and other blogs. I have no wish to relive the details, nor to debate the whys and wherefores of my friend's pain and his ultimate act.

I can only send my thoughts and best wishes to his father and mother in this awful, unimaginably painful time, and hope with all my might that wherever Donovan is now, he is happy and at peace.

Please, (3.00 / 16)

someone, crosspost this at DKos and Booman, where he was also well-known and well-liked.

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

Done (6.00 / 5)
I posted your essay on Kos, pretty much as is.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/...

This is a rather scary time to live in isn't it?

Crossposted at Booman (5.33 / 3)

thanks for the Dkosxp

And at MyDD. (5.00 / 2)

Right now I can't think of anywhere else he might have been known.

Maryscott, Take This Down Immediately (2.00 / 8)
Have you no shame or decency.

You know that Donovan despised you for blogging about his last suicide attempt. He never forgave you for treating his life like blog bling.

Donovan has been staying here, on and off, and we've been speaking by phone frequently. You have no idea what is going on.

His father is an abusive piece of garbage -- and I must assume he called you with this little tidbit for your front page. Both of you are trash.

Donovan would hate this. You have disgraced him.

And you know this to be true.

I don't know how you can live with this in yourself.

Also call of your robot cross-posters and have them remove this diary from those other blogs.

I'm disgusted with you.

[ Parent ]
Pluto, I know NO such thing. (9.00 / 2)

Donovan posted a SUICIDE NOTE ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THIS BLOG.

Blog BLING? Are you fucking KIDDING me??? He was my FRIEND. And I was his.

"Despised" me? No, I know no such thing. The last communication I had with Donovan was warm. If he spoke ill of me to you, and I have no reason to doubt it, then I regret that in his last moments he was sick enough to believe not only his family but his friends were enemies, instead of what they truly were: people who loved and cared for him and suffered because of his suffering.

And his friends deserve to know what happened, and that he is at peace.

Frankly, I cannot BELIEVE that YOU would post such a comment as this.

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

[ Parent ]
I'da left it up. (6.00 / 1)
Damn bullies.

[ Parent ]
HOWEVER... (3.67 / 3)

I have moved this post to the Community Area; it's been up front long enough, and I can't stand seeing it any longer.

He cared enough to tell (0.00 / 0)
us because he loved us.

Anything he said off med (though I doubt it); hello, paranoid schizophrenic.

Who would walk into a wake, and start screaming, and being rude when people are mourning or remembering?

No one I would like to know.

[ Parent ]
And I deleted the Booman and MyDD posts. (3.00 / 1)

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

[ Parent ]
Thank You (1.50 / 2)
...from his Real Family and friends... who called me about this and brought it to my attention.

One more request -- could you removed that fucked-up drunken photo of Donovan from years ago? He has been living in sobriety for some time.

Certainly you have a nice picture of him you can replace it with.

He would be embarrassed and ashamed to see that photograph.

I, personally, see no problem with this Diary in the sidebar.

[ Parent ]
you troll rated me why? (6.00 / 1)
Donovan & I used to talk all the time.

I say I loved him & you fucking troll rate me?

[ Parent ]
Seriously Pluto (0.00 / 0)
What the fuck is your damage? I'm sorry you're upset, but you don't get to run around telling other people how they should grieve or how they should acknowledge a loss. Christ. I"m fucking sick of this control freak bullshit.

"What fresh hell is this?" -- Dorothy Parker

[ Parent ]
Can we please just let this go? (5.25 / 4)
I am sure that Pluto is also grieving.  Pluto's TR's on Diane and Maryscott have been removed.  This is neither the time nor place for squabbling.

Only solitary men know the full joys of friendship. Others have their family; but to a solitary and an exile, his friends are everything. - Willa Cather

[ Parent ]
PROVE IT (9.00 / 2)
PROVE he stayed with you off and on.  PROVE he didn't want to be remembered.

why should we take your word for it Pluto?

-pyrrho-

[ Parent ]
Now is not the time (7.00 / 5)
to chastise someone else for behavior you don't think is proper, Pluto. We're all hurting because of this, we all missed him and we honor his memory. The way in which each of us chooses to do that should not be subject to criticism from others.

Don't try to unload your anger and sorrow by taking it out on someone else. It doesn't help, it only makes the one criticized feel worse...and eventually, given any honest self-analysis, any thought beyond self-righteousness, makes the critic feel like a jerk.

But examination of the available data leads only to the conclusion that the biggest beneficiary of the Bush Presidency is Warren Harding. (Steve Mirsky, "Antigravity", SciAm 10/05)
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est. (Latin for All Occasions)

[ Parent ]
His father is an abusive piece of garbage (4.08 / 13)
I don't know who you are and your comment is beyond belief. You have no idea what kind of father I was. I do not know what Donovan said on this blog or to you personally, but did you ever stop to think that his voice was often the voice of the demons that he fought so valiantly for more than twenty years. During those twenty years I was always there for him visiting him evey week when he was in jail, being involved as much as he wanted me to be during his treatment, and taking care of him in ways that he never knew and in ways that you cannot possibly know.
Donovan was my buddy during his entire early life. I was in school so we got to spend many summers to together. Today while you were making your caustic inhumane comments, I was keeping my sanity by dealing with his earthly possessions. Among them I found every card and letter I have ever sent him. I found a coke cup from a time when we went to Raiders training camp that one of his early football heroes had taken a drink from. I found a spray bottle from a time when I took him to the US festival, his first concert. I have loved and supported him throughout his entire life. The years when he was clean and sober after his rehab at the Native American Health Center in San Francisco were some of the best years of our lives. We went to sweats, Native American church, and traveled as a family back to Oklahoma to see my father and visit relatives and the grave of my Tsalagi Grandfather, Donovan's Great Grandfather.Donovan's brief yet most excellent recovery pointed the way for me to find my indenty and we were a whole family for a while. I am now on a good path in life because of his strength. In a way, I owe him my life and would give it without hesitation to bring him back.
But he is gone forever to me and his mother from this life. The incredible pain we feel has only been offset by the fact that he was greatly loved by all who really knew him. His light is gone from this world and if you understood the light that he possessed, you would never be able to speak of me in such a way. Your words are those of an unbalanced spirit. As I send the smoke of my prayer fire to the heavens, I will speak your name. Please have some decency and respect in our time of intense grief. Peace to you and all who can hear me.

moonfire

[ Parent ]
I cannot imagine your grief... (2.00 / 7)

and I didn't know Donovan as intimately as some here. But I saw his brilliance in things he wrote, I saw him shine with that wicked sense of humor, he brought so much joy~!

I too have a child that suffers much the same way as did your Donovan. She too lives in San Francisco. She too is full of light even through her pain. She is my heart, my friend, my daughter who is as close as my next breath.

She has made three attempts over the years. I know how it feels to know you have no control over your child's adult mental illness. It wasn't your fault.

You and Donovan's mother will be in my prayers and my heart.

"I tire of this banal chat...now is the time on Sprockets when we dance." ~Dieter/SNL

[ Parent ]
I have been busy.... (2.00 / 1)
but my prayers are with you and your daughter and you are right in saying that the grief we are feeling is unimaginable. We have been receiving an incredible amount of love and support, but our lives are changed forever. When the time is right I will post my owm memorium on this blog.

Thank you for your kind words. Many people in the last few days have asked what they can do for us, and this is what I have told them. Honor my son and the legacy of love he created by loving your daughter unconditionally and the very next time you see her, look deeply into her eyes and tell her so

[ Parent ]
When a child dies out of season... (11.00 / 1)
and by their own hand it leaves a darkness in the soul of those left behind as insurmountable as the greatest mountain.

But the light Donovan left is never ending and will not be forgotten. It was an honor to have borne witness to that light.

Honor my son and the legacy of love he created by loving your daughter unconditionally and the very next time you see her, look deeply into her eyes and tell her so

I'd like to share her Valentine's Day card with you.:

For My Mom on Valentine's Day

For letting me know
I didn't need to be perfect
in order to be perfectly loved.

thanks, Mom
You're wonderful.

So yes, I will honor Donovan's legacy just in the way you suggest. Through all her madness the one constant and true thing she has been able to hold on to, is the fact of my love for her, no matter what.

Please be kind to yourself, in the same way your were kind to Donovan. I think he'd want that.

I'm so sorry to read this. I just hope that he will finally know some peace. What a tragedy.

Shit (6.00 / 5)
I'm so sorry to hear this.  I had truly hoped he'd find the help he needed.

I hope he is at peace, and send my condolences to his family.

Oh, and Maryscott--thanks for cropping the photo.  The picture is haunting enough without the words which originally accompanied it.

Well shit. (2.67 / 6)
I tried to call him around christmas, too.

I just popped in between jobs, to pick up customer #2's silver... and thought I would check in.

Aww Donovan.

I loved you, man.

Send my utmost condolences to his family.

I cannot process this right now, nor cry.  Not right now, I cannot let me.

I'm so sad to hear this (6.00 / 4)
I did not know him beyond enjoying some of his posts here, but in the past months I have thought of him periodically, wondering how he was. I had hoped he had found some way to be at peace in this world, to find the sense of purpose and connection that we all need.

My condolences to those close to him.

This is so incredibly sad, he will be missed by so very many.  Rest in peace you dear, dear soul Donovan, rest in peace.

I did not know him but when I read this.......

I visualized he was flying into the arms of people who love him and at last with pain gone he is at peace.

I hold all of you in my heart today who lost a friend and a part of yourselves.

Thoughts and prayers (4.86 / 7)
with Donovan and his family.

It was only a couple of weeks ago I thought of him in the Fantasy MLW QOTD.

I missed him then, I miss him now, I will miss him in the future.  Donovan was one of our originals and one of the reasons I came here from Dkos.

The downside of community blogging is the pain and sadness we feel when we lose someone in our now extended family.

I'm sure we didn't realize this when we signed up.

When I first came here... (8.80 / 5)
I felt like a bit of an outsider.  Beagle was one of the few regulars here who frequently interacted with me.  Every now and then he would ask me if I was that guy from Access Hollywood.

I hope he has found peace.

Mourner's Kaddish (9.45 / 11)

Glorified and sanctified be God's great name throughout the world which He has created according to His will. May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days, and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon; and say, Amen.

May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity.

Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.

May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us
and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

He who creates peace in His celestial heights, may He create peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

I'm saddened by this (8.00 / 7)
This should only be about one person, and that person is Donovan.

This is not the time nor is it the place to come here and attack Pluto, and if the attack is worthy of a response perhaps another time and/or place would be much more appropriate.

Donovan gave much to this community, he deserves to have our focus and attention in this time of his passing on him.

Just my two cents.

I guess he was before my time.

Nonetheless, this is terrifically sad and I just want to acknowledge the passing of someone who was friend to this place and a friend to many of you.

I am just so sorry.

Blessed Are Those Who Mourn... (11.00 / 6)
for they shall be comforted.

Bonvoyage Donovan.

May the light and peace of God be with you on your journey home.  And may that same spirit of light and peace bring comfort to the hearts of all those you leave behind to mark your passing.

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,and bring the homeless poor into your house;

Staring blankly at the screen (8.33 / 12)
It's times like these that I wish I was the kind of writer some people tell me I am.  Words are useless, though.

I hadn't communicated with him in a year or more...I knew him on here pretty well, but we'd only e-mailed a few times.  He seemed like he wanted to get to know me better, but my own particular insanity was climaxing at that time, so I never really responded.

Fuck.

He told me once he admired and appreciated my creativity.  That meant a lot to me, since I knew how creative and funny he was.  He seemed to be good at that from what I could tell while interacting with him here....always knowing what to say to buoy a person's spirits.

Why can the truly good ones in life seem to have the ability to make everyone else happy except themselves?

MSOC, Pluto, Diane:  You were the first three I thought of because I knew you all were close to him.

I myself am made unutterably said by this, but it pales next to whatever grief you must be feeling.  So whatever frayed nerves, strained emotions and internal agonies may cause hot and hurtful words, remember the common bond you all share:  Donovan.

I'm leery of saying "The deceased would have wanted {x}" because, really....how do we know?  So I will only say this:  this terrible tragedy in no way detracts from the joy he brought to all of you.

Share the love he gave in life.  Not the pain of his death.

Peace seems to be the common word around here today and it is apt.  Whatever hellspawned demons haunted him, they are silenced and his torment is no more.

My kindest and most sympathetic loving thoughts to all who are hurt by this.

The Bard:

"After life's fitful fever he sleeps well. Treason has done his worst. Nor steel nor poison, malice domestic, foreign levy, nothing can touch him further."

The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present...As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.

he was right about you, the above proved it yet again.

I talked to him several times after last time.

He wasn't mad at any of us. Pissed he hadn't succeeded, but loved us for being who we are, and said he'd have probably done the same for us.

He was one of my cosmic warrior brothers.

just yesterday morning... i found the note that you'd gone....

...and i always thought Id see you one more time again...

He would laugh at me singing JT badly at him.

I Will Send Out A Prayer For Donovan Tonight (10.00 / 1)

I'm really saddened by this (9.10 / 10)
I last saw Beagle when Rachel and Weeping were in town.  A bunch of us got together at some mediocre Italian restaurant downtown, and Beagle was there, along with his usual dry wit.

I'm really sorry this has happened.  Right now, I feel like I hate that fucking bridge.  This sort of thing happens every two weeks.  Every fucking two weeks.  Someone's brother, someone's sister, someone's child, someone's parent.

And for all you people who have been squabbling over this, I think Beagle would have only one thing to say:

You're all banned.

Oh, man...the only thing that makes this bearable is knowing that he's now at peace.

May whatever afterlife he finds bring him rest and healing, and may he find the happiness and fulfillment in his next lifetime that eluded him in this one.

Two comments from people who knew Donovan... (11.00 / 2)

Somehow this got onto MySpace; I'm kind of glad, because it elicited these two comments from people who knew him:

Bowie... He truly was the 'Mod' in Bowie.
I will always recall Donovan as "mad brilliant." I met him in high school on the bus heading home, hung out with him occasionally, and enjoyed our brief encounters as our paths crossed every few years as adults. I never truly new Donovan as I know a very select few did, but he was always open and honest with me. I knew he had something going on deep in his head, we all knew. It's best to remember him for the joy and laughter, and sometimes the aggrevation, that he brought into the lives he touched. Donovan, you were at times selfish, but you gave far more energy to others. You have effected many lives, and your deeds are now done. I'm glad to have known you. Thank you for being you! ~R. Garrett

I am saddened to hear not just of his death but of what seems to be the tragedy and sickness that kept him under most of his life. Donovan and I were good friends in the formative middle school years. He was a keen observer and a big emotive person for better and for worse =D
It seems his life was full of pain and tragedy but apparently thanks to the modern mediums per technology breakthroughs I am happy to read that there was indeed people who loved him very much and knew him well. THAT is what is important in life and I am very glad that Donovan died knowing that there were people who loved him.

I have fond memories of Donovan and the gang from our childhood days; going to see Father Guido Sarducci's comedy show, overnight birthday party at my house (which is New Years Eve) where we got picked up by the cops for running away from them for doing, well...nothing (maybe bad thoughts of ruckus raising was guilty enough for us haha).

My heart goes out to his parents and family who as I remember as warm loving and supportive parents who always encouraged Donovan's creativity.

RIP old friend...
