Kathleen Gilligan Sebelius: Our Next Vice President?

by: durrati

Sun Apr 13, 2008 at 15:00:30 PM PDT

During a terse back and forth with Lestat in one of the essay commentaries about a month ago I suggested that it was my opinion that Barack Obama would be well served to choose Kathleen Gilligan Sebelius as his running-mate.

My Interview With The Vampire did not go so well. Lestat scoffed at the idea and snarled "that would be a fifty state loser" or "worse than McGovern" or whatever Hil's talking points that day.

But I disagreed.

Kathleen has many strong credentials. Not the least of them being an Obama/Sebelius ticket could help what is fledgling Democratic trend in the Plains and Mountain States that could rewrite the electoral map.

Should Barack succeed in wresting the nomination from Hillary there will naturally linger some resentment and suspicion among her many women supporters that this is politics as usual and the boys won't let the girls play.

And even though I think that after Hil is finally done for there will be statements from Dean, Gore, Kerry and Kennedy as to why they opposed her; explanations of how she helped to stymie the first three's Presidential ambitions to further her own will not placate the ladies...they are MEN after all.

But picking Sebelius might go a long way towards shoring up Barack's much needed feminine support and answering their very pertinent question...

"If not Hillary - Who?"

durrati :: Kathleen Gilligan Sebelius: Our Next Vice President?

Sebelius is also a Catholic, a constituency Hillary also has done well with, whose roots go back to all important Ohio where much affection lingers among oldsters for her father, John Joyce Gilligan, "Ohio's Fighting Lib" who served his country in World War II - earning a Silver Star- and served his state as Governor from 1971-1975.

Kathleen was married in the Ohio Governor's Mansion to  K. Gary Sebelius (Kansas' self-professed "first dude") whose father was a Republican U.S. Representative from the Sunflower State.

Elected to the house herself in 1986 Kathleen was sent back by Kansas voters twice more before, in 1994, stunning her followers by electing to run for the office of Kansas State Insurance Commissioner and winning...the first time a democrat had held the office in 100 years.

Refusing to accept campaign donations from the  industry she was to regulate, she is credited with freeing her office from the influence of protection peddlersinsurance companies.

During her tenure she blocked the proposed acquisition of Blue Cross Blue Shield by Corporate Giant Anthem BCBS of Indiana, stating "The merger would not be good for the consumer."

It was the first time Anthem had been stymied in a takeover.

Taking advantage of interparty friction between moderate Republicans and the fundie fringe Kathleen seized the Governor's Mansion for Dems in 2002 on a platform of more funding for education.

Dealing with a conservatives in Topeka she managed to get her increased funding increase...with a little help from the Kansas Supreme Court which in 2005 demanded the legislature increase the funding of K-12.

As she said in her response to Dubya's 2008 State of the Union;

"I believe that our greatest generations are still to come."

And she will fight to educate them.

Sebelius supports abortion rights and blocked efforts by the Legislature to impose new standards on Planned Parenthood which could have effectively shut them down.

And although she blocked a popular conceal and carry law that was eventually adopted over her veto, she won relection in 2006 in conservative Kansas by a whopping 18% plurality.

Shortly after this year's New Hampshire primary she endorsed Kansas' native son Barack Obama for the Presidency.

I believe with Sebelius on the ticket we will stregthen our chances of winning not only in Kansas, but in Missouri, Colorado, South Dakota, Nevada and Utah as well as her native state of Ohio.

There are rumblings of discontent with Republicans out west...let us draw from there a proven pickpocket of moderate Republican votes.

As Kathleen has said...

A healthy state encourages many voices - and lots of listening.

Here, here, Kath, and you might add...a healthy blog and nation.

Janet Napolitano (9.00 / 1)
My suggestion is that Obama pick Janet Napolitano.  For these reasons:

1. Obama-Napolitano has a nice meter.

2. Napolitano is as popular in Arizona as Sibelius is in Kansas.

3. Arizona is the home state of the Republican nominee.

Of course, Obama has never taken my advice.  Ever.  And it's a good thing.  I would hate for him to be associated publicly with TarheelDem who blogs primarily at My Left Wing.

Want a third party -- 50 states, 210 media market, 435 Congressional Districts, 3080 counties, 192,480 precincts -- Go get 'em

I haven't investigated it............ (0.00 / 0)
but I have read that the concern with Janet is doubts about her sexual orientation, but the voters of Arizona don't seem to have a problem with her never married status.

In any case I think she would also be a good choice.

My criteria: A woman Governor who has won in a traditionally Republican state from the western half of the country.

Janet fits the bill.

Tarheel (6.00 / 1)
You might have a point about the metre and sound of the ticket.

Now that i hear it again, "Kerry-Edwards" does have an effete sound to it.

"Doubt is not an agreeable condition, but certainty is an absurd one." -Voltaire
Ah, my dear Voltaire, doubt is an acquired and cultivated taste, like Laphroaig Whisky or fine truffles, and quite as exquisite.

Colin Powell (4.00 / 1)
It's much more fun to suck the brain from the cranium of people and choosing Powell would do just that, I think.  And with Powell in that office all of Cheney's antics would be reversed.  Remember, it's time for a change, so let's start talking about real changes and not tactics.  Peace

Wouldn't choosing Powell (0.00 / 0)
bring back bad memories of how he was used by Bush/Chaney?

The Vice-Presidency isn't (0.00 / 0)
worth a warm bucket of spit, said some VP.  So making Powell VP would be his reward for being a fuck-up.  As long as he hits the campaign trail and tells the whole world how much of a fuck-up bush and Cheney and the rest of the neo-cons were and are he can be rehabilitated and his reputation could be restored.  Think he's man enough to repent and call a spade a spade?  Peace

[ Parent ]
that was John Nance Garner, FDR's V.P. (0.00 / 0)
and the original quote was "bucket of warm piss."

He was succeeded by HST who was no stranger to colorful scat quotes hisself...

I think Powell has already expressed his displeasure with the Neocons and doesn't particlarly need to be rehabilitated further, but I also acknowledge the pain that will be inflicted on a large segment of the the women voters if Clinton is rejected.

If we want Barack to win I think we need to take their feelings into account.

"Fascism is attracting the dregs of humanity- people with a slovenly biography - sadists, mental freaks, traitors." - ILYA EHRENBURG

maybe it's just me (10.00 / 1)
but i only know one female clinton voter in real life who would be upset if obama won, and i only know 2 voters total (the other one is wavering).

then again, my town went something like 2-1 for obama, and i've only seen one lawn sign and 3 bumper stickers for hillary. so the sample may be badly skewed.

surf putah, your friendly neighborhood central valley samizdat

[ Parent ]
depends on the strategy (0.00 / 0)
what obama thinks he needs to shore up, or where he wants to press an advantage.

IMO, obama's weakness with women would not exist were his sole primary opponent not a prominent woman. thus, unless this race breeds resentment strong enough for him not to win left-leaning women back in the general - which i do not think is within the realm of possibility outside of a few pockets - it really isn't something he needs to compensate for. he's got a very strong track record.

rust belt working class ethnic whites have been tougher for him, men and women, and one way to go would be to try and shore that up with a suitable veep along those lines, someone with enough credibility with them to reassure people nervous about obama.

personally, at this point i think it may be worth pressing his advantage out west and in the great plains. not all that sure that sebelius is the one to do it, any more than richardson would be (another name bandied around when veepstakes debate pop up). someone who would be good there IMO is:

russ feingold, believe it or not. his 2nd amendment record is pretty solid, he has been a critic of free trade deals for quite some time, the guy has the accent, the reform/good government cred and the nice guy demeanor that should help a great deal in the great plains states, and his right-to-the-point commitment to civil rights will play exceptionally well out west.

of course the best possible veep has got to be al gore, who has already shown he can do the job. ;-)

surf putah, your friendly neighborhood central valley samizdat

additionally (0.00 / 0)
i don't see sebelius as much of a speaker, campaigner, or DC operator - three things obama will need to get to the white house and get things done. even if she's well known in KS, i'm not so sure that that brings the rest of the great plains or midwest along with her.

picking an eminence grise as veep would also make sense, someone well schooled in the ways of arm twisting and deal-cutting on capitol hill. given the number of daschle people in obama's campaign, i wouldn't be entirely surprised to see him floated as veep in the end, although i'd prefer someone like harkin or conrad to daschle.

surf putah, your friendly neighborhood central valley samizdat

[ Parent ]
perhaps you are right, wu ming (0.00 / 0)
maybe he doesn't need a woman on the ticket...but it would be a nice nod to the Hil crowd...

feingold would be a nice choice also but perhaps two left libs would prove a bridge too far.

I don't think Gore wants it.

Sebelius has proven she can win in a heavily Repub state; I think Obama is not willing to cede anywhere.

We will see...

:)

I like Richardson for VP (9.00 / 1)
He has the possibility of attracting the Hispanic vote.

And isn't he looking good lately with that beard?! (Yeah, I just had to put in the customary "female" gushiness.)

OTOH, I'm pretty partial to the idea of an Irish-American woman in line for the White House. And she's young enough to run in eight years herself. Now she might be a female Presidential candidate I could get behind.

But examination of the available data leads only to the conclusion that the biggest beneficiary of the Bush Presidency is Warren Harding. (Steve Mirsky, "Antigravity", SciAm 10/05)
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est. (Latin for All Occasions)

[ Parent ]
I'd rather get behind her than Hillary (0.00 / 0)
Though the thought of ANYONE who was able to attain electoral office in Kansas (read: conservative as all bejeezus) being the standard bearer of the Democratic party makes me a little queasy.

The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present...As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.

Did I just read you admit a preference for "getting behind" one woman over a different woman?

I never knew you to be so picky!!

Normally I am picky.. (11.00 / 1)
....you may have gotten a skewed perception by watching me here...there's no need to be picky since all the women hereabouts are gorgeous and sexy and brilliant.

The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present...As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.

[ Parent ]
i'm not convinced he can, is the problem (6.00 / 1)
he hasn't shown any ability to swing latinos outside of his home state of new mexico.

i will agree with you on the beard, though, and have waited my whole life for a hirsute president. never been a candidate in my lifetime, although i suppose bearded gore was a hirsute president-in-exile.

Obama or Clinton are going to need to shore up their national security/look-aren't-I-tough-and-ready-to-use-the-army flank.  Clark's charming, smart and about as progressive as you can get for a military man. (Damning with faint praise, I know)

If he'll take the job, I can't imagine it isn't his for the asking.

The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present...As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.

Ray, I read over at Orange (0.00 / 0)
that Barack does not want to "shore up" his national security experience, he thinks he's got a handle on it.

Perhaps the elders will convince him to do otherwise......but I think he'll be stubborn about this one.

Sebelius is not what I would call conservative, her main focus has been trying to wrest a billion bucks from the Kansas Repubs to inprove education in the state.

She took on Big Insurance and won and favors abortion rights...
