(Um... wow.

And Yet another Palin scandal???

AND

Rough Transcript:

Murphy: Um, you know, because, I come out of the blue swing state governor world.  Engler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, I mean, and these guys, this is all like how you win a Texas Race race, just run it up, and it's not gonna work.

Noonan: It's Over.

Murphy: Still, McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech and do himself some good.

Todd: Don't you think this Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson?

Noonan: Saw Kay this morning

Todd: She's(?) never looked comfortable up there...

Murphy: all bummed out.

Todd: I mean, is she really the most qualified woman they could turn to?

Noonan: The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives and youthfulness and the picture...

Todd: Yeah, but what's the narrative?

Murphy: I totally agree.

Noonan: Every time Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it.

Murphy: You know what's the worst thing about it, the greatest of McCain is no cynicism, and...

Murphy: This is cynical.

Todd: And as you called it, gimmicky.

to front-page the "Palin a VP for all Citizens" essay.

Or Jar Jar Binks.

And that's why it's your blog, not mine.

A comedy of errors? (6.00 / 1)
Dearest Maryscott . . .

It never seems to end.  This is the medias fault, or so the Republicans claim.  As I said aloud days ago, were it not for the seriousness of the situation, she could be considered a cartoon character.  Her story is almost comical.  Indeed, for me, even John McCain is and was laughable as a viable candidate.

At moments such as these, I am always reminded of Peggy Noonan and her narrative.  While in college, she wrote in The Reagan Revolution she was on a bus with countless students and Professor.  They traveled to a peace protest.  As she sat among the many a young Miss Noonan mused; they are all a bunch of intellectuals.  Once the observation was made, she notes, she decided she was not like them.  She was a Republican.

For many Republicans, to be part of the Grand Old Party is to be bright, "right," and real.  They are practical people.  They understand the "rules."  The phrase is, "You are either with us or against us."

I cringe when I hear a Progressive pose that posture.  I am joyous when a Republican, such as a woman I met at a Michele Obama event says; she and her husband consider themselves intellectuals.  That is why she and he re-registered.  This wondrous woman spoke of what she thought John McCain had done that was dishonorable.  She said his actions were the reason she would not, could not vote for John McCain.  I wonder what the person I met at that affair thinks today.

McCain is delusional (8.00 / 2)
He's being interviewed by Charlie Gibson, king of the softballers.  When asked about her foreign policy experience, he repeated the "Alaska is next to Russia" line, and said she's more qualified than any of the other potential VP candidates he could have chosen--Ridge, Romney, et al. He's practically gushing when he defends her credentials.

He sounds smitten.

McCain sounds smitten? (7.00 / 2)

Or Gibson sounds smitten?

It's a fair question -- Gibson being the great fellator he's always been.

Fellator? Fellater?  Since it's a made-up word, do I get to choose?

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

[ Parent ]
McCain (7.00 / 1)
Gibson didn't follow up on a single one of McCain's non-answers, but McCain sat there with a goofy grin on his face extolling her virtues.

The transcript is up already.  Here are a couple of cherry-picked quotes:

I mean, she's got an incredible resume, including a beautiful family and a wonderful, loving, caring family. So I will think that, over time, people will compare her accomplishments with that of Sen. Obama, and his are very meager.

And one of the key elements of America's national security requirements are energy. She understands the energy issues better than anybody I know in Washington, D.C., and she understands.

Alaska is right next to Russia. She understands that.

You say fellater, I say fellator, let's call the whole thing off.

You're not suggesting that McCain chose Palin because... well... he wants to jump her bones?

I just don't get the point.

Does he find her attractive?

Sure.  Probably.  She is/was.

But what does this mean?

Photobucket

Lord of the Karmafishes

[ Parent ]
Karma, I'm not saying McCain (5.50 / 4)
that's why he chose Palin, in fact I think McCain had very little say in who the VP pick would be, but do I believe him when he says he's thrilled with the pick, yup, and do I think it creepy that he calls her his soulmate, yup.

But more than that, it's the leering way he looks at her, the need to touch her even as she moves away, he moves in, he looks at her ass, it's disgusting and yes I do know these things, I'd venture to say that many women know these things.

What does it mean?  It means that John McCain is a misogynist, it means he's a dirty fucking old man, it means that he's sexist to his very core, it means he can't control himself even when the press is there because he doesn't think he has to, he's another one of 'those' men who treat women like objects and worse, men who think they have the right to do with us what they will.

I was being a little glib in my first comment but this is not glib, you wanted to know what it all means, that's what it all means.

Don't take my word for it, ask around, see if other women feel the same way.

Palin is brilliant (7.14 / 7)
This is going to work out perfectly for Obama. Here's why.

Obama was always going to have a hard time getting attention this week given the RNC. The best he could have hoped for, pre-Palin, was that McCain gets a weak bounce and can't push out a strong message.

Well he hit the jackpot. Sarah Palin is dominating the coverage and not in a good way. Her multiple scandals is making McCain look like an idiot, driving undecideds away from the ticket, and drowning out whatever message the GOP was trying to push this week. Instead of the media talking about the latest smear against Obama they're obsessed with the Palin soap opera.

Sarah's speech tonight will dominate coverage, and it doesn't matter whether it goes well or badly - it still will overcome whatever anti-Obama message they want to push. McCain's speech will be a dud, and then Obama can reclaim momentum while McCain is wounded with a crappy VP pick and a Republican Party more convinced than ever that their nominee sucks.

It's a tragedy that one of the most important elections in our history turned on a small-town theocon and her bizarre family, but if it means the defeat of McCain I'll take it.

Palin, and John McCain, are brilliant! (6.00 / 2)
Dearest Eugene . . .

When I saw your title, I was there with you.  Sarah Palin, and John McCain, are brilliant!

Then as I read you thoughts, I realized you had faith this would work well for Obama.  Oh how I wish it were so.  I fear it is not.  I think McCain was wise in the same sly ways Bush and Cheney have always been.  To say I am scared is an understatement!

Hey e, Palin made a huge mistake when ... (8.25 / 4)
she criticized the media, they were already on her trail but she stepped way over the 'let's try not to be an idiot' line, a sarcastic throw away line in a speech with a voice that is cringe-worthy, it will come back to haunt her and the imbeciles that are trying to make all of this nonsense look like an actual campaign.

I agree with e on hitting the jackpot, the media is going to be obsessed with finding the goods on Palin. McCain has been taking shots at the media on his own, this just crystallizes it for them.  The message will be hidden under layers and layers of lies and half truths, ain't life grand sometimes?

Are we having fun yet?

And yet another twist... (4.80 / 5)
The newest rumor hitting the airwaves is that Track Palin had a choice between joining the Army and going to jail.

At some point, one cannot help but think that perhaps Ms. Palin has been putting her political career above the needs of her kids.

Yes, i heard a variant of that (4.00 / 2)
I think it was on CNN a couple of days ago, when someone suggested that because she had "young kids" she should refuse the job and stay home to take care of the kids.

The female people on at that time, and after, and on other networks didn't like that at all.  They wondered if the same argument would be made for a male candidate.

At one point, I can't rememberwhere, one female asked another "Do you think that was sexismn."  The other roared back, "Darn right it's sexism."

Me, id say that it is proof positive that Palin's husband is putting his career ahead of raising the kids.

(You know, folks, I am just passing this along.  I DO think it is something interesting to contemplate.  Do we have a double standard for the sexes still?  Not trying to prove anything, just raise a question raised elsewhere.)

I didn't say anything about her having "young kids." (8.25 / 4)
That is not at all what I said.

I will change my last sentence to include her husband.  I have reached the point at which I think she and her husband have failed their kids in some way.  One kid allegedly involved in vandalism, another pregnant with a self-described fucking redneck's kid -- I am beginning to have some serious doubts about their parenting skills.

What you are reporting -- that a woman with young kids should stay at home -- is not an argument that I would ever make.  I have met plenty of women and their kids who are much better off with mommy at work and the kids with nannies or in day care. I have even met women who should never have had kids.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer for moms and kids.

hat I said was (0.00 / 0)
that i heard a variant where "someone" (obviously not you) suggested that because she had young kids.......

I hadn't heard the most recent smear in full at the time.  the incident I am referring to is a day or two old.

One kid allegedly involved in vandalism, another pregnant with a self-described fucking redneck's kid -- I am beginning to have some serious doubts about their parenting skills.

I believe that parents get too much credit when kids turn out all right, and they get too much blame when they turn out bad.

And I am shocked, SHOCKED that anyone here would think there is anything wrong with the kid getting pregnant.  (I wouldn't be shocked if they could explain the practical difficulties, you understand.)

Ihad a friend both of whose daughters got pregnant in high school, at 17.  He tells me, "you know, at that age they're going to have to start making decisions for themselves, and sometimes they make wrong ones."  He just gave them all the support he could.  I didn't count him a bad parent.

btw, did they still have the town (i forget which one, it's a west side suburb of Phoenix) where the parents of teenagers who got in trouble paid the fine?  I was working at Adobe when that came in.  Some of those kids were salivating.  i would  have, too.  A chance to have a little fun, maybe steal some beer and drink a little, stay out past curfew, and screw the old man all at the same time!

Anyway, I don't have nearly the information i wold need to judge her and her husband as parents, and whether or not their teenage kids got into a little trouble would be a minor part of it.

If they turned out like some of the families i had at Adobe, then i might start to wonder.

The Skyhawk was designed by Douglas' Ed Heinemann in response to a US Navy call for a jet-powered attack aircraft to replace the A-1 Skyraider. Heinemann opted for a design that would minimize size, weight and complexity. The result was an aircraft that weighed only half of the Navy's specification and had a wing so compact that it did not need to be folded for carrier stowage. The diminutive Skyhawk soon received the nicknames "Scooter", "Kiddiecar", "Bantam Bomber", "Tinker Toy Bomber", and, on account of its nimble performance, "Heinemann's Hot-Rod".

Wrong (4.00 / 1)
got to go with Maryscott on this one.  She gave a speech that clearly was entirely suited toher cadence.  (Hewrs seems to be longer than normal.)  She likes to build a line, let it die a little, and then pile drive it home.  In the second half of the speech, she was not able to do that, and she started stepping on applause lines.  (And applause.)

But there were two immediate indications that it was a great speech..  First, Olberman couldn't wait more than a second to diminish it.  he was in a panic.

Second, and this gives some indication of how much of a rabbit she is (that means quick learner).  A person in the Alaska delegation said that it was the best speech she ever gave.  Remember, she has been a candidate for four days, and worked with this team for less than that.

And one more significant thing you might cling to:  she wavered and lost her balance while winding through Georgia, the pipeline, Russia, blackmailing Europe with energy, terrorists attacking Saudi Arabia, Iran cutting off a fifth of the world's oik at the straits of Hormuz, and the oild produced there in Venezuela, before catching herself just before she fell out of bounds and running home with the north bank of Alaska.  It means that they have a way to go on "the World."

And a pit bull like her is going to be a challenge for a softie like Obama, and a tactical problem even for Biden.

And i must say that i expected the people here to do all that is possible to paint the speech in the worse light, but  quick roll down shows that people here are in a real panic.

Maybe it was better than I thought!

tonight, while rudi was speaking, I thought that if i had some godly power, i would convince Obama to come in disguise (I thought whiteface to look authentically Republican-- how's that for a stereotype!), his appearance altered a bit, have him just disguise his voice, and then have him give some parts of his own speech from last week at this convention, with the names changed in appropriate places, so that, for instance, when last week's speech named "McCain," this weeks would substitute "Obama."  I would have him introduced as a precinctman from Cairo, (Ill), say.

then, I wondered for my gedankenversuch what i would find in the response here to the strange speaker.

oh, and speaking of the 1980s (9.00 / 1)
One good thing to come from tonight is that I'm back to despising Giuliani.

You see, when he was elected, I referred to him as 'scumbag' for the longest time until he took some courageous stands (supporting illegal immigrants, endorsing Cuomo, some other things) which caused me to be less strident and more ambivalent in my feelings towards him, and then he got the cancer and even expressed regret at not having reached out to black people more and a couple other things that made me pity him.  In fact, he was a very different man back then, much more sober and deliberative and much less vitriolic.  He actually behaved as a man who reevaluated his life in the face of a potentially life-threatening disease.

And then of course he was there when they blew up the World Trade Center and I felt very viscerally that he was a just a fellow New Yorker suffering the devastation.

But after tonight, all the old feelings came back.  I remember why I wanted him to die all those years ago.

For some reason, tonight just went right to my heart in an alarming way.

With force and clarity.

Maybe because it's the first time that I've really felt (as opposed to just intellectualized) that the Republicans not only could, but probably will win.

I heard all the familiar attacks and remembered just how resonant they've been my entire life.

My entire life.

There's no reason to believe they won't work now.

Bush came at the camera during that debate in 2004 and started waving his hands about madly like a raving lunatic.

I watched with a mixture of horror, embarrassment and pity and thought, "Finally, the jig is up.  This guy's going to Bellevue.  Even Republicans have to admit he's behaving like Nero."

Until America proves to me that it will vote for Barack Obama, I'll never believe they will.

I just have zero evidence to suggest they will.

And it's really interesting it sounded hollow and empty to you.  I guess you're right, it did by comparison, but the U-S-A chants, maybe especially, I found chilling and vital.

Also, all the other militarism.

People like that stuff.

I didn't say anything to them about what I think of Palin and McCain, because they didn't ask.

They are really nice people.  I had a great time talking to them when we ignored politics.  But these really nice people have no problem at all being really intolerant and judgmental of people who think like me.  Or at least very tolerant of people insulting and attacking people who think like me.

I just find it so hard to believe that they cannot seem to realize how harmful that intolerance can be.

In all honesty, the speech was better than I expected, in all honesty, the speech was better than you expected, and, finally, in all honesty, the speech was better than the people at the hall expected.

98% of the rest is simple, naked political lying.

It was a fun speech to watch.

I can go die now.

..

..

Sorry, i just wanted to get you cheering a bit.  But take heart.  If I had a fear, it would be much imminent than weeping's.  And Maryscott, you haven't respected that.

"Doubt is not an agreeable condition, but certainty is an absurd one." -Voltaire
Ah, my dear Voltaire, doubt is an acquired and cultivated taste, like Laphroaig Whisky or fine truffles, and quite as exquisite.

Stop that! (1.00 / 1)
With this dying stuff.

Some of us, even when we disagree with you, still appreciate your presence.

You piss people off, but we need the contrary and non-partisan voices.

It's important.

Palin failed. (6.50 / 4)
Palin was selected by McCain to gain him the advantage of a motivated base.

Problem is, the effect of nominating Palin has been to motivate the Democrats' base, and the media, even more.

My fear was that Palin would transcend her role as a pander to the Christian Right and instead give a Reaganesque or Obamaesque or Clintonesque speech capable of inspiring across party lines.

She didn't.

Instead, she sounded like a rightist on a blog.  She is just more partisan politics as usual.  Red meat for the Republicans, but little to sway the voters that count.

She is truly a gift that keeps on giving.
