Red Fish, Blue Fish -- Old Fish, New Fish

by: Maryscott O'Connor

Thu Sep 04, 2008 at 09:56:05 AM PDT

This Is the Face of the Republican Party:

For the last few days, the same group of indistinguishable sweaty white people who gathered in New York in 2004 -- and plastered purple bandaids on themselves to mock the military service of John Kerry and the wounds that merited his three Purple Heart medals -- have spent their time in St. Paul at their 2008 convention alternately worshipping their own war hero (who languished, lamentably, tortured in a POW camp, while Kerry fought in that war, earning those Purple Hearts in combat) -- and jeering the candidacy and accomplishments of Barack Obama and his millions of Democratic followers.

On the face of it, the Grand Old Party looks to be having a good old time in St. Paul. A grand old party, in fact. Laughter, after all, is the best medicine, right? Sure is... And god knows, we're all in need of some sort of a cure.

But the contrast between the two political conventions held this summer could not be more stark, and while there will always be a substantial segment of the population ready to fall for the re-constituted manure these folks have packaged and are handing out in their pitifully tiny venue in St. Paul -- their medicine won't work. Laughing at someone is never as powerful as laughing with someone. And we all know it.

DIGG THIS ESSAY

Maryscott O'Connor :: Red Fish, Blue Fish -- Old Fish, New Fish

They've been up to their old tricks: thinly veiled racism in the form of dismissing "community organisers" as little more than do-nothing welfare cheerleaders; howling "Zero" while lying through their teeth about Obama's career record; claiming Washington is broken while ignoring the fact that they've been in charge for the past 16 years; calling Washington "liberal," of all things, while ignoring the fact that they've been in charge for the past 16 years; bizarrely chanting slogans better suited to Nuremberg rallies (ironic, considering the mock concerns whispered about just such imagery at the DNC convention by Peggy Noonan, whose true opinions were recently exposed by her inability to shut up with an open mike on her collar)...

Oh, the list goes on and on, my friends...

The Democratic convention, by contrast, was a veritable paint-by-numbers portrait in positivity. By no means did Senator Obama or any of the featured speakers shirk their duties: they were there to do three things -- rally the Democratic base, make the case for Barack Obama to the American people and make the case against John McCain. Check, check and checkmate.

Now, to those of us more rabidly partisan among the "ANGRY LEFT," the myriad acknowledgements of the laudable and honourable service of John McCain to his country were like icepicks to our lizard brains. "NOOOOOO! Kick  him in the NUTS!!!" I could almost hear my fellow frothing left wingers in their respective living rooms screaming it with me.

But that's not what most liberals and Democrats are about, you see. UNLIKE most "conservatives" and Republicans, liberals and Democrats do not thrive on nasty, hate-filled, jeering mockery and snide dismissal of our opponents and their beliefs. Liberals and Democrats actually BELIEVE in the Constitution and in the principles on which this country was founded: that the better angels of our nature must be our guides as we strive to progress  in our development and maturing as a nation, as a people. And that this demands cooperation, civility and compromise -- even as we struggle against each other in our ideological battles.

The contrast could not be clearer as we watch the last throes of this truly pitiable display of Republican "pride." Their laughter truly does ring hollow, coming as it does at the expense of good men and women; in their cries of "Country first" you can hear an almost audible echo of "But not for YOU, you stinking liberal Democrats!" Sneering faces, hateful screeds against anything new or different, anything that challenges a way of life not their own -- these people could easily have been transported to St. Paul from any time and place in mid-20th century America... as long as it was Whites Only. Even the younger attendees look just like the youth of mid-fifties white America. They might as well be wearing their pledge pins.

Their time is coming to an end, and they can feel it; you can see the sweat pouring down their faces. They're terrified. Fear brings out the ugliness in people of weak character. Fear turns to hatred.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

A 25 year-old diarist at dkos, bless him, was absolutely shocked by what he called "the most hateful display" he's ever seen. Obviously not quite paying attention during Pat Buchanan's 1992 speech, the one that apparently inspired Ms. Palin to become a Republican (and that tells us all we need to know about her).

In his desire to shake off any residual bad juju left from this hateful display, the diarist (Muzikal203) created an impressive and inspiring, appropriately 21st century version of a photo album of the uplifting and positive Democratic convention for people to enjoy. I'm positive he will not mind a bit that I'm passing it on to you all:

Correct, politically and otherwise (11.00 / 1)
Dearest Maryscott . . .

It was dugg correctly.  The images are toooooooo cool.  How and where did you find an embedded image such as this.

I cannot even recall what else I wanted to say other than people who think it is fine to bruise others also enjoy battles on foreign fields.

America needs more energy; our opponent is against producing it. Victory in Iraq is finally in sight, and he wants to forfeit. Terrorist states are seeking nuclear weapons without delay; he wants to meet them without preconditions.

Al Qaida terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America, and he's worried that someone won't read them their rights.

Warriors have and will always scare me . . . no matter the Party.  However, when fighters kill publicly, and question why others might reject torture . . . oh my gosh, to say I am frightened is beyond an understatement.

I do know many who think as this bunch does.  I often feel they are the majority.  Perhaps that is why we have perpetual war.  I am terrified!  I feel no hope.

Excellent Essay (9.67 / 3)
we should recruit that DKOS guy for our graphics section!!  What, we don't have a graphics section?  Damn!

In one of those serendipitous moments, I thought I remembered a re-release of Dr. Seuss' book on vinyl with a new title.

Yep!

Red Fish, Blue Fish, Old Fish, New Fish.

I think it is fitting.

(if you ignore the old-timey prison slang implications of the last one)

They are the old and red Fish.  Obama is the New and blue Fish.

(ooh....that prison slang keeps coming back to fuck it all up)

Anyway, excellent essay, especially useful to open the eyes of our youthful voters who have never experienced this type of vitriol and gamesmanship.  Just think, a 20 year old, who is voting in her first election, must think this is a great country.  Why, we have a black presidential candidate, we've got former Democrats hobnobbing with Republicans (OK, we see the "reaching across the aisle" as merely making space to give a hand job), a viable Latino candidate, at least three women in the race, a religous minority represented (c'mon, he was Mormon fer Crissakes) Republicans who became Libertarians, Libertarians who became Republicans...a true melting pot of ideas, ideology, race and gender.

It is good to show them that even our recent history tells a different tale.

And I think your estimate of 16 years is a little shy.  How about 26 of the last 28 years. Or even scarier, how about 34 of the last 40!

However, even that gives me hope.  If we, as a nation, can survive all that, for four decades, we can take anything.

DA is The Most Interesting Man in the World. - Karmafish

And on this:

these people could easily have been transported to St. Paul from any time and place in mid-20th century America... as long as it was Whites Only. Even the younger attendees look just like the youth of mid-fifties white America. They might as well be wearing their pledge pins.

My husband and I were remarking on the same thing. It went something like this:

Him: "Why do they all look so..."
Me: "White?"
HIm: "Well yes, but..."
Me: "Old?"
Him: "... yeah."
Me: "Even the young people look old."
Him: "But it's not just that. Everything about it looks old and dated. Their whole convention. The styles, the photography, everything..."

Yeah. And what they're saying. Old, dated, reactionary...

And mean. Did I mention mean? I did, didn't I. I mentioned mean. A few times.

their time is coming to an end? (6.00 / 9)
I sure hope you're right, Maryscott.

All I can say is, I'll believe it when I see it.

If ugly xenophobia doesn't carry the day, I'll be most pleasantly surprised.

I want desperately, in my heart of hearts to believe "not this time," but as I say, seeing is believing.

Ironic, perhaps, that I should feel this way, given that Obama resonates so deeply with me as an idealist.

As a realist, though, I've always been deeply sceptical of his self-professed strategy of "putting his faith in the American people."

I know it's better to at least pretend to be hopeful than cynical, but when I hear him extend so much credit to the American people I have to ask myself what planet this man has been living on.

All the same, I sure hope my cynicism is misplaced.

After seeing that performance last night, though, I'm just reminded how deeply such ugliness seems to resonate with so many people.

What are you trying to say, MSOC? That Sara Palin smwells like cheap tune? (8.00 / 1)
Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap. Sara Palin has the clap.

It doesn't matter if it's true or not. In fact it's better if it's NOT true. Cuz then the denials sound really righteous.

and when you're denyin' you're 'off message.' When you're denyin, much more than when you're lyin', you're dyin'...

Marcy Wheeler nails it (9.00 / 1)
Marcy Wheeler (Emptywheel) deconstructs the "community organizer" meme well.

Though I'll go billmon one better. I think they're setting up a very specific attack on Obama's push to register people to vote that will play right into their expected attempts to use voter ID laws to do vote caging on a massive scale.

My deconstruction is that "community organizer" equals "outside agitator".  I guess I didn't think about the practical ramifications.

Want a third party -- 50 states, 210 media market, 435 Congressional Districts, 3080 counties, 192,480 precincts -- Go get 'em

UPDATE: (9.80 / 5)

Someone on a European blog accused me of borrowing from the Republican playbook by "making light" of McCain's POW experience and torture with the phrase "...languished, lamentably, tortured in a POW camp, while John Kerry earned those Purple Hearts in combat."

My response was as follows:

As the daughter of a man who was killed in Vietnam, I do not take lightly ANYONE's service in war. Ever.
I do, however, take seriously and personally the outrageous mockery and derision THEY heaped upon John Kerry's bravery and honourable service in that same war.

LANGUISHING in a POW camp is NOT something to be taken lightly.

Please note the definition:

1.    to be or become weak or feeble; droop; fade.
2.    to lose vigor and vitality.
3.    to undergo neglect or experience prolonged inactivity; suffer hardship and distress: to languish in prison for ten years.
4.    to be subjected to delay or disregard; be ignored: a petition that languished on the warden's desk for a year.

That's not taking it lightly.

Nor do I take lightly the TORTURE he suffered -- though his fellow Republicans, with their rewriting of the definitions of torture, certainly would seem to, despite their paeans to HIS PERSONAL experiences.

His response that I still hit below the belt would suggest -- to me, at least -- that his original criticism was rather disingenuously motivated in the first place, but I guess I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Nevertheless, I stand by my defense. I am the daughter of a Gold Star Wife, a Daughter of the American Revolution -- an orphan of the Vietnam War whose Marine Corps First Lieutenant father was killed at Khe Sanh three months before she was born. I never met my father because men like John McCain chose sacrificing hundreds of thousands of human beings to the machinery of endless war over admitting their mistakes... or, as I now believe, they made those sacrifices deliberately
on the altar of their true gods: money and power.

And now John McCain is an old, rich man and has become the chess player instead of the pawn and aims to sacrifice many more hundreds of thousands, if not millions, to another generation of the military industrial complex, whose only end is money and power.

FUCK THAT, and FUCK HIM. Thirty-some-odd years ago, he suffered greatly as POW in Vietnam, and I feel for the man he was then. Today, I feel for the people he intends to torture and kill.

FUCK HIM.

I think it merits a diary (2.00 / 2)
and wide distribution. Perhaps it's the Marine spouse in me talking, but I think this needs to be said.

Something you've really crystalized in my thinking; McCain is making mockery of his own POW status and torture by caving on that issue. I feel for the people who are being tortured by us and I feel for own troops who will be tortured in kind, now that we've opened that can of fucking worms.

If you have the time and energy, put it out there... God, how many diaries have I not written because I'm just too fucking tired. [sigh]

Like, did you catch this action last night? The camera kept closing in on MEN IN FUCKING UNIFORM in that audience. My husband was practically stroking out. But, I'd need to dig up photos... Christ, I'm tired today. CFS sucks.... I'll shut up now.
