QOTD: Superhero Edition

by: cleverguy82

Fri Mar 06, 2009 at 00:13:24 AM PST

( - promoted by Curmudgette)

I went to see the midnight showing of "Watchmen" tonight, even though I didn't really know anything about it.  I've never read the book, nor have I even done any preliminary reading to make sure I'm not lost.  So why would I go to see the movie, given the lateness of the hour and such?  Because I'm a junkie for superheroes and superhero movies.

Ever since I was a little kid and "Spiderman and His Amazing Friends" was on TV (this was the one with Iceman and Firestar), ever since the very old episodes of X-Men, for years and years, I've been nuts for superheroes.  Why?  The psychological analysis is probably something about my latent powerlessness and feelings of inadequacy, but really, I'm just a big fan of super powers.  It's my favorite part of the whole comic book / superhero thing.  My question may now seem obvious, but follow the jump anyway.

cleverguy82 :: QOTD: Superhero Edition

I'm thinking, as I gear myself up for this movie, of what super power I would want, given any number of options.  When I was younger, my favorite was super strength, but in a practical sense, strength can only take you so far.  Machines with superhero strength (like a crane) still need support systems, like ropes and things.  So I gave up on strength at a relatively early age, actually.  Then, for a long time, I was in love with my own intelligence, given that I was a smart kid in school, so I actually fell in love with telekinesis -- the idea that I could use my super brain to actually move things!  Well, I realized that even telekinesis only goes so far.  Even telepathy only goes so far.

So, after a long, long time of deliberating I've settled on one of two options:

1.  Super intelligence, to the point that I could develop new science and technologies to change the shape of the world.  Engineering cold fusion, bioengineering cures for diseases, super-productive farms, the ability to travel to other galaxies, all those sorts of world-changing things.

2.  Super sex.  I mean, I'd wanna be the best ever at it.  Just amazing, and also incredibly attractive.  The ability to give anyone any number of orgasms that they could ever want, plus rock hard abs.

The second one is totally a joke.  But tempting nonetheless.  So, my questions are:

What power, of all the documented powers in various comic books, would you want to have if you could have it?
Furthermore, why would you want it?

What good would you do for the world with that power, assuming you would even bother doing good for the world?

Also, the poll here is a longstanding debate amongst my nerdy friends.

Seriously, Watchmen was pretty goddamned fantastic.  I recommend.

What a neat question, cleverguy82!! (10.33 / 3)
Superhero:  I'd go with Billy Jack.  He's always taking on the bad guys and winning.  I saw the movie Billy Jack, when it first came out more than 30 years ago, and the part I liked best was when he kicked the asses of all the red-necked goons in town!  Yeee-haa!

Ahhhh....Life goes on.

Glad to hear that you're all through with chemo and are back  to normal, after a long, rough-tough journey, Kathleen.

Ahhhh....Life goes on.

[ Parent ]
Hey! Good to see you! (5.50 / 2)
Boy, I haven't thought about that movie in years, but I remember being deeply affected by it when I first saw it.

I don't know if he was a superhero, maybe more of an anti-hero, but there was something deeply satisfying in his righteous anger in defense of the defenseless.

Superb choice!

Insert witty quote here.

[ Parent ]
Hi, puzzled. (0.00 / 0)
Good to see you, too!  How've you been?  I'm doing well--hope you are too.

This:

I don't know if he was a superhero, maybe more of an anti-hero, but there was something deeply satisfying in his righteous anger in defense of the defenseless.

is an interesting point, puzzled.  His righteous anger in defense of the defenseless is a sign that even the good guys have to take a stand and fight back at times.  As for the idea that Billy Jack is an "anti-hero", I'm not   sure about.  Is it  because he ultimately ended up being hunted down on a murder charge after the shooting death of the abusive father of 15-year-old Barbara and his having killed Bernard with a Karate chop to the throat when Billy Jack finally found him making out  with a 13-year-old girl in a seedy hotel on the edge of town, maybe?  What do  you think, puzzled?  Just curious.

Thanks for  your compliments.

Ahhhh....Life goes on.

[ Parent ]
anti-hero (6.00 / 1)
I guess what I was thinking of when I described Billy Jack as an anti-hero was his flawed nature.

He had ideals, but also acted out of a kind of gut-level anger at times, and sometimes lost control of his temper, as in the incident with Bernard that you cite.

Thanks for reminding me about a movie I had almost completely forgotten!

Insert witty quote here.

[ Parent ]
Aha....good points well taken, puzzled. (9.00 / 1)
Everybody has "flawed" natures, so to speak, but Billy Jack's idealism and righteous actions were, at times, a bit overshadowed by his uncontrollable temper and the tendency to act out of a gut-level, emotion-ruled anger at times.

Yet, at the same time, given the prejudice that Billy Jack, as a person who's part Native American, had to contend with on a regular, ongoing basis, the anger was quite understandable.

Ahhhh....Life goes on.

[ Parent ]
Superpower? (9.00 / 3)
I'd want the gift Tarzan possesses to be completely at  home in his environment.

Tarzan's gift might be bet employed in the preservation of wild-life and wild spaces.

Trumpets? Golden angelic music?

Surfing the Apocalypse-So you don't have to!

Clever question, Cleverguy82!! (10.50 / 4)
Easy

I'd like power over time.  Thus, I effectively gain immortallity (cuz I can always go back in time, I can stop time, thus creating the "Matrix" time frame, avoiding the bullets or the dickhead dropping a piano on my head, or I can go forward in time to get a cure for my disease).

Although it might take a while, I could right every wrong (being able to stop time to fix things).

Oh, I would be the greatest superhero.

By the way, I already have the second power you mentioned.  It isn't necessary a superpower, just attention to detail!!!!

Great Question.

And thanks to you and Curmudgette for being on the ball. My internet was down last night right after I replied to you, to my frustration.  Plus, My XBOX had a system failure, so now I get to send it back for repair again (I just got it back last month after the three lights of Doooooom failure).

In loving memory: Sophie, June 1, 1993-January 17, 2005. My huckleberry friend.

Well, DA, goddammit, (7.00 / 3)
stole my answer.

Much like Hero in Heroes I would choose the power to control time... but DA, stole my answer!

Miserable rat-bastard.

Fine.  I'll choose something else.

I was going to launch into a disposition on the paradoxical nature of time travel and how it can create multiple, even potentially infinite, numbers of selves, but now I cannot because DA swiped my idea!

So, instead, I will go with invisibility.

Of course, the power of invisibility also creates certain problems.

For example, does it mean that I have to run around naked?

I don't know.

All I know is that DA stole my time travel idea.

Thief!  Robber!

I would pick Yoda and train a whole army of super heroes.  I would change the world so that all people live in peace and harmony with all living things.

Invisibility (7.00 / 3)
would probably be most useful for crime fighting, but for just what would be the most damned fun, it's hard to top flying.

Also (0.00 / 0)
why was invisibility always a girl super-hero power? Wonder Woman had an invisible plane, and the Invisible Girl in the Fantastic Four was, well, invisible.  What is the psychology behind that?

[ Parent ]
Reminds me of (6.00 / 1)
Gyges's ring from Plato's Republic.

Wikipedia:

It granted its owner the power to become invisible at will. Through the story of the ring, The Republic discusses whether a typical person would be moral if they did not have to fear the consequences of their actions.

Reading minds would be a good one. (10.00 / 1)
I have often wondered what it would be like if no one could speak and to communicate we read each others minds.  What would a world be like if we always knew the truth?

It is a matter of life and death, see the documentary Food INC and vote no to corporate take over of our food every time you buy groceries

I wouldn't want it (8.00 / 2)
without the ability to block it out. The internal "noise" would be deafening, plus there are some people's minds I don't want to read.

I'm shocked! (9.00 / 2)
I figured some of you, and you know who you are, would have chosen x-ray vision as your superpower.

Just goes to show you how wrong I can be sometimes.

The superpower I'd like?  Hmmm...

Time-travel would be  damn cool...

I think I'd skip the flying thing, although given the state of air travel, I might want to re-think that.

Super-strength?  Possibilities...

Nah, I'll stick with time travel.  Definitely number one.

Insert witty quote here.

I'd pick time travel (9.00 / 2)
to go back and buy Microsoft or whatever cheap, bet big on underdogs in the Superbowl or World Series, that kind of stuff...

But going back further?  I dunno.  Lots of diseases and stinky louse-ridden ignorant people (like at the CPAC...) no cell phones, no music on demand, no running water...ugh.

I don't know what I would choose.  Perhaps mind control, if only to force my daughter to stop playing the same five songs (two of them Christmas songs) on her recorder.

Or Aquaman's ability to speak to animals, although I would want to have it extend to land animals as well.  Then I would know exactly what is going through my dog's mind when he stares at me.  Abe stares at me a lot.  I have no idea why.

Obama 2012.  Because he didn't piss off enough people the first time around.

The unfathomable doggy mind (7.00 / 2)
So much of what they do is absolutely transparent, but sometimes it would be nice to know what the hell they're really thinking.

We've decided our Lab is part Wookie.  She makes these bizzare Wookie-like noises when she's trying to convey some crucial pieces of information to us.

Unfortunately, I speak no languages not native to this planet, so she remains inscrutable.

Puzzled (0.00 / 0)
you know some of us so well.

Of course, I wouldn't need X-Ray vision.  I could sneak into ladies dressing rooms with my time travel, and see all of their all-powerful boobies I wanted.

Of course, as a superhero, and because I could see them anytime I wanted, they would cease to lose their mysterious power over me.

What makes you think (5.00 / 1)
I was referring to you?

Feeling a bit guilty, perhaps?

Ok, I'll admit it, my first draft of the response actually had your name in it as a parenthetical.

I think the time-traveling into dressing rooms might freak out a whole lot of women.

You'd pop in for a peek, and then leave just as quickly?

Could be dangerous, especially if you traveled into a room with some crispy old lady--you could give her a heart attack!

Hey, and good luck quitting smoking.  Don't take your grouchy moods out on us.

Or do, what the hell.

the best part would be seeing the boobies.  bar-none.

The ability to travel through space AND time. (9.00 / 4)

Like the kid in Jumper, which did not suck nearly as much as I thought it would.

Granted, he is not, per se, a "superhero." Then again, it is a "superpower," and there can be no denying THAT.

And I would do... whatever the fuck I WANTED to do with it, that's what. I would do a ot of good for a lot of people, and I would also take VERY good care of myself, thank you very much.

Frankly, the way things have been going the past few months, I've been thinking some very selfish and not altruistic thoughts about just exactly what I'd do with a superpower or two. And yeah, it involves ripping off a few goddamned motherfucking banks. Starting with the one at which I do my own goddamned motherfucking business. Goddamned motherfuckers.

$12 billion in taxpayer bailout funds, 5 private motherfucking corporate goddamned jets... oh, don't get me started on JP Morgan Chase fucking shitball asswipe... oops.

And I answered Batman, for what OUGHT to be obvious reasons and therefore will not be enumerated by me.

--7.88, --6.56      If I can't rant, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

They wouldn't fight (7.00 / 1)
Batman and Spiderman are on the same "side", so by rights they shouldn't.

So there.
