QOTD: Webcomics

I was a serious comic book reader in the 60s as a kid.  Moved to Zap and underground in college.  Larson, Griffith (that's Far Side & Zippy) as a yuppie.  Not really into it now (no graphic novels, etc) but the appreciation for a good comic - one panel, a series, web or print - will never leave me.

Tom Tommorrow and A Town Called Dobson are my favorites at the moment. Plus, I truly miss Get Your War On. Laugh out loud at work and send a link to friends level of humor.

Can't believe I left him off for my pre-web comics.  Loved him before the Simpsons, when he was a regular in the alternative press.  Love Be Hell, Work Be Hell, the whole series - wonderful stocking stuffers!

Why does everything that is published on new media have 'web' or 'e' in front of it?  Webcomics, ebooks, webporn....bah.

Comics are comics.

A Town Called Dobson used to cross-post here.  And the infamous David Honig used to post regular comics or cartoons here, but he's one of them there Jewy boys, so I'm not sure he counts.

I used to love comics.  From Sgt. York, to Creepy, all of the 'Mans,' The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, to the cheesy funny ones like Archie or the Scrooge McDuck stuff.  Long before there were Saturday Morning Cartoons there were comics and newpsaper cartoons, you whelp!  My favorite was Classics Illustrated.  When I was a boy, I got to read a bunch of turgid classics by reading comics!  For a while, this kept me interested in literature that most kids don't even bother about.  Hell, I think I did a few papers in Junior High School by reporting off the CI versions, instead of the originals.  Better than Cliff's Notes.  Of course, eventually, I realized that I might be missing some subtleties, so I ended up reading the books.  I wouldn't learn new languages to read them in the original, but I'd read 'em in Ainglish!  Now, I've got over a thousand books in my library.  I might be better served having comics (at least in considering storage space).

I even like some of the newer, Graphic Novels.  Alan Moore's stuff is pretty good.  I loved 'From Hell' and consider it a nice take on an overused genre (Jack The Ripper novels).

But I don't go out and look for webcomics.  I'm not a snob, just lazy.  If they don't show up on my regular haunts, I rarely seem 'em.

And if I'm your dad (and yes, I'm old enough), then I'm the cool (or embarassing) long-haired dad who smokes dope and plays 'rock and/or roll' (another Matt Groening reference).  Or I'm the scary, creepy dad, who wanders around the house all day in his underwear, carrying a shotgun, and ogling younger women.  Wait...I may have said too much!!!

I don't read a lot of web comics (surprise), because, well, I'm old and have no sense of humor.

Ok, I do read Tom Tomorrow, but I have to admit, I'm more of a news junkie than a comic person.

I did like your links though, and bookmarked a couple of sites, so there may be hope for me, yet.

It's a gamer comic...lots of stuff about various video games and star wars and stuff.  Obviously my kids found this one and told me about it, and sometimes they have to explain what the hell they are talking about, since I only play a few games and don't get into all gamer crap.

But I hate reading stuff on computer screens.  Doesn't matter what it is...if I were insanely rich and a bastard who didn't give a rat's ass about the environment, I would print out everything I wanted to read, because it's so much easier for me to read stuff on paper.  

And I would make some comment about babies and whining and stuff, but I feel really really old this morning...I started some new training with free weights yesterday and damn.  I can feel it this morning.  

Obama 2012.  Because he didn't piss off enough people the first time around.

I am so with you, there.  I dislike reading anything over 500 words or so on the computer.

I've bookmarked Matt Taibbi's latest Rolling Stone piece on the financial meltdown, but it's like 9000 words, and I just can't force myself to sit still long enough to read it.

Maybe it's the technology, maybe it's a little ADD, but I much prefer paper, where I can make margin notes, whatever.

it's a lot easier if you make your browser narrower.  The hard part, cognitively, is the scanning across long distances.

It's narrow.  I hate using that too.

Perhaps it's the ephemeral qualities of online...it's there, then gone.  Plus I am a very impatient person about some things, and not being able to easily and instantly flip back and forth irritates me a lot.

And if I am dork mom, then I feel obligated to ask if you have eaten any vegetables or fruit this week.  Would it kill you to eat a banana?

(This is a conversation I have regularly with my son, who's a freshman at the U of Arizona.  But his girlfriend's parents like him, and have him over for good home-cooked meals regularly.)

I love this, lets all do the smarty pants dance!!!

I laugh every time I watch this.  Listen closely and you can here the skateboarders laughing.  The first time I saw it I showed my son (he was a skateboarder then) and we watched it over and over laughing and laughing! Guessing what in the hell the old lady have in that bag!!


It is a matter of life and death, see the documentary Food INC and vote no to corporate take over of our food every time you buy groceries
