that you could believe what the health insurance industry tells you about the horrors of health care reform.

The column claims:

The Federal Government's proposed mandatory health insurance will mean mandatory vaccinations/immunizations. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) says that for anyone who refuses to keep up-to-date vaccinations, under the new health reform, you will not be able to obtain any health care you may need until immunizations are current.

Really?

I've read the bills, though I have probably missed some of the markups. Nothing in there about mandatory vaccinations. Nor can I find anything from the CDC to support the claim. Made up bullshit.

Dude, know your sources. This isn't a good one.

The comments in the WAPO articles, for example, are just screaming with anti-Muslim sentiment.

No question about it.

The question that I am interested in, tho, is just how to interpret this thing?

Was it a matter of the man simply cracking up from the pressure or are there other things at work?

Was it a terrorist act?

Does the left even accept the idea of terrorism?

Is it true that he cried "Allahu Akbar" and, if so, what are we to make of this?

Was it a political act? A religious act?  Purely personal?  Or some possible combination of all three?

And is the murderer responsible for his own behavior or do we need to lay the blame on "society" or the military or the Israelis or the current administration or the previous administration or the corporate-fascist-military-industrial-congressional complex?

We do not yet have the answers to these questions, but whatever the truth, I fully expect the netroots left to entirely ignore any possibility that this was a terrorist act.

We do not believe in "terrorism," after all.  What other, less enlightened, people call "terrorism" is really nothing but the fully justifiable response of perfectly innocent oppressed groups to western, American, and Israeli imperialism, colonialism, and war.

So, who's really at fault?

Maybe we should wait and hear what the man has to say. He is still alive. I mean, rather than all projecting our agendas onto this, why not go straight to the horse's mouth? If he were dead, a thorough analysis of his writings and reports of people close to him would be the next best thing. In this case, probably a combination of the two is in order. I say we try to avoid mischaracterizing his motives like we did with the Columbine killers. It will never happen. He's about to become a tabula rasa for every political ideology under the sun. I prefer reality.

I didn't think of these questions.  They were asked jokingly by my daughters boyfriend, who just returned from yet another tour in Iraq.

But i will pass your concerns on to him.  Maybe he can tell me what his little jokes have to do with someone shipping out now.  If there is any insensitivity, it may be in a n9on-consideration of the victims.  These jokes would not be appropriate at a gathering at Ft. Hood.

btw, I didn't think there was a fight between us.  I haven't been doing any fighting.  Purposely.

I've read both threads.  I don't know if you think I'm stupid, but that whole fol-de-rol in the QOTD is what I'm talking about.

Any jokes about this subject are insensitive to those who have friends and family going through these same things.

I've got a nephew in Afghanistan right now, so yeah, I think that just maybe, jokes about the guy who shot up his fellow soldiers while returning or heading to deployment might be offensive.

Fort Hood is where almost all Army personell go for processing either out or in from overseas deployemnts.

And bullshit on you trying to justify your bad timing and bad manners.  Would a 'nigger' joke be offensive in Scarsdale?  Yes.  It doesn't matter where you are.

The "going through" in the jokes is about career advancement, promotion, and being tough enough to ship out.  Actually, that bit was the first thing the guy said.  

Anyway, I'll suggest to him that maybe his jokes were just his PTSD talking.  And he can tell the people treating him at VA.  I'll copy your comments to an e-mail to him.

As for the "fol-de-rol" on the QotD thread, I still don't know what's going on there.  I haven't sdaid anything mean, i haven't made any comment that did any of the things she sems to think i did, and i got positive marks on the comments she originally reacted negatively to from others.

So maybe you can come yup with exactly what I'm supposed to feel guilty about on that thread.

Myself, I simply feel like I always do when people say they are having a bad time.  I hope things get better for them.  And I said so.  and i didn't pry.

who notice that they seem to have difficulty (I've noticed that MSOC, Curmudgette and Joools have all had times when they just won't talk to you), maybe it isn't all them.

Twice, Joools told you she wasn't having a real good day or some facsimile thereof, and you keep picking at it.  And then, regardless of who tells the joke, you come over to this thread to pass on jokes about the Fort Hood Shooting.

I don't care if he is a vet, and has PTSD.  The jokes are insensitive.  They're insensitive to the soldiers killed and wounded, they're even insensitive to the shooter and his family.

Professional comedians often talk about the lag time that you have to respect, when it is still too soon to joke about something.

So, since you asked, I will.

Your crime is that you are an insensitive bastard.  And the fact that you don't see it, proves it.

In that regard, I look forward to your post similarly everyone someone posts something here insensitive to someone.

DA, I realize that the first proof that someone is a drunk is that they tell you they don't drink./  (I can do it, too.)

I didn't pick at anything.  Do you think she picked at anything?  Do you think maybe she was insensitive?  I put two comments u p, both I thought were fun, one was informative.  She picked at both of them, making false accusations.  I answered the accusations and expressed sympathy.

I don't know why she told me she was having a bad time, but maybe it was to excuse her picking at me.  I mean, i really don't know.  But i do know that from time to time, not always, Joools decides that anything I say is something it isn't, and she attacks me not for what i say, but something else.

What i did was simple.  I responded to what i thought was wrong, and i expressed my sympathy.

She didn't tell me anything about why it is a bad time, but if it is just what you say, I sincerely hope that all turns out well.  I hope that in the meantime, she has lots of support.  So electrocute me for that.

I, for one, thought it was hilarious.

Maybe it's just me, but I find black humour -- even in the most GRIM of situations, and yes, that INCLUDES 9/11 -- very uplifting. I don't know why, but it really relieves me. The sicker the better. Dead baby jokes, incest jokes -- NOTHING is off limits to me. There are no sacred cows for me when it comes to humour.

So... to each his own, but I kind of wish I'd been here when this actually went down.

Again, the question that I have is, was this, or was this not, a terrorist act?

It sure looks like one to me.

Terrorism, if it has any meaning, means using violence against innocent people for political purposes.

Whatever personal issues this murderer may have had there is no question that there was also politics behind the act.

In the mean time, I see that over at booman they're still blaming society, at large.

The victims of that hatred and bigotry include so many people. That one man would choose to impose his own murderous backlash against that tide of hate, and would take the path of violence to slaughter his fellow soldiers at Ft. Hood should not surprise us. If anything, we should be surprised that more such incidents have not occurred, considering the rhetoric of the right, and the hatred and oppression of the American Muslim community.

Or, more specifically, this diarist is blaming "the rhetoric of the right" and the "oppression of the American Muslim community."

So, I continue to find myself scratching my head.

Are we going to blame ourselves for this?  Are we going to blame America, in general?  Are we going to blame the right-wing and the Bush administration?

Or did the murderer absorb a murderous ideology?

Or did he simply snap?

We still do not know, but it's clear to me that the liberal-left will never accept "terrorism" as an answer to the Nidal Hasan question.

The reason for this is not because terrorism is too facile an answer, because that can certainly be fleshed out, but because we have a very difficult time even accepting the concept of terrorism.

And part of the reason for that is because the Bush administration used terrorism as a means of political empowerment and to divert financial resources in various directions.

or why. We may have a better idea down the road. Until then I'm not much interested in speculating. I also think our tendency is to react to events such as these as if it's possible to know what led up to them and how to prevent them. I think, to a large extent, it's not possible.

As for Gary, perhaps I mis-read, but he seemed to be implying that the enemies who are infiltrating our armies are muslims. I find that an offensive charachterization.

Is this guy down in Florida a terrorist? Is it possible for a Muslim to just go postal? How are we defining politics? I just want to be a little cautious before I draw conclusions about this guy's motives. I'm very tired of facile reasoning on our "war of civilizations." Personally, I think the issue of terrorism is a complex one. A more honest description of 9/11, for instance, would be "asymmetric warfare." All war is a form of terrorism. You don't win a war without terrorizing your enemy.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. I just think food for thought is in order.

This story, sad as it is, encompasses so many of my issues with the left.  I think that how we respond to this one says an awful lot about our politics, the politics of the American left.

13 people are dead at Fort Hood.

A murderer shot them.

Why?

How we answer that question says something about ourselves... it's a key to understanding current western liberalism in its understanding of Islamism.

See, I do not think that we believe in "terrorism."  God knows, I did not for a very long time.  In the 90s, I was pretty much convinced that bin Laden was Emmanuel Goldstein.  

Americans were getting off on their two minutes.

After 9/11, I understood that terrorism was real, but also recognized that the Bush administration was manipulating fears of it for political purposes.  That was pretty much obvious to all of us, I think.

All of us on the left.

But now I understand that "radical Muslim terrorism" is most certainly a real thing and something that the western left simply cannot face honestly.

This is not a condemnation of Islam, nor Muslims, but of an ideology of hatred that seeped into Hasan.

I think that the liberal left is willfully blind.

there's an American Left. I don't think it's that monolithic, nor can it be. I think there are many left-leaning Americans, of which I am one, but I guess that depends on how we even define "left-leaning." I can't do it. I'm just too much about shades of gray in all things. I don't even really think there's a conflict between Muslims and Jews in the Middle East. I think there's a territorial squabble between a group that defines itself as Jewish Israeli and a group that defines itself as Muslim Palestinian. Humans, like all animals, are territorial first and foremost. It gets conflated with other cultural attributes like religion and culture, but at bottom, it's really just about territory.

Again, I'm more concerned with how HE answers it. Then we can make these self-defining decisions.

He may well have done it because he identified with a very particular definition of jihad; one that is not universally Islam and is, in fact, considered heretical by many Muslims.

I think there's some of that, but not across the board. I do think many leftists are all about underdogs and power imbalance issues. And I think that what we call "terrorism" is really asymmetric warfare. It's undertaken by groups with less money and power against groups with more money and power. To do that they leverage the fear of surprise and uncertainty. They hit civilians. They strike in unexpected places, rather than on battlefields or other defined theaters. They do that because it's the most effective way to hit the psychic pressure points of a state and its people when you can't afford a major military machine. This is a tactic of war. But all war is terrorism. That's why you can't fight a war against terrorism. How do fight a war against warfare?

But now I understand that "radical Muslim terrorism" is most certainly a real thing and something that the western left simply cannot face honestly.

I think we have to face that we are in an active, but very nebulous conflict, and that one classification of our many enemies is radical, militarized Muslims groups. But, we also have to acknowledge that the conflict is in both directions. We, as a country, are not hapless victims who suddenly got attacked for no reason, or because we were hated for "our freedom." I don't think either the right or the left is facing it honestly. We're too ignorant about how we have been engaging the Muslim world, let alone much of the third world. We have made enemies of many stripes. And we're wealthy, for as long as that lasts, with a massive military. That we'd get hit with some sort of asymmetric attack was pretty fucking inevitable.

The left is not monolithic.  Quite right.

Nor is the US guiltless in its confrontations...; far from it.

And terrorism is, most definitely, a form of asymmetric warfare.

Nor, of course, does the behavior of the murderer, or the ideology of the murderer, reflect on Muslims, nor Islam, in general.

And, yet... and, yet...

There is something that we can call "radical Muslim terrorism."

9/11 actually happened, after all.

Are we capable of condemning it?

I'm not sure I get any of this.  After it happened I was monitoring TV and the narrative was about "suicide on bases" "PTSD" and the general inquiry into what War related causation resulted in this Major going postal.

Now we know more.  He was actively involved in some Muslim Fundamentalist activities..the latest... http://www.thedailybeast.com/b...

For one, I find this compelling and I don't.  This is ONE guy.  Most Americans have NO idea how much HELP many American Muslims and Muslim Groups have been to the Intelligence Community. I do.  Their help has been immeasurable.

Conflating this guys act to malign that community is insane.  

So is denying that perhaps, he was a run of the mill Jihadi and this was his own little terrorist attack.

Oh, the other thing about places in the world which may date back to very ancient cradles of civilization?  These geographic areas of the world may contain artifacts that might prove something about history.  Things certain established moneyed interests may not want the general populations to know about.  Facts which may shed new light on the origins of humans, what "primitive" cultures knew about their world.
